Chapter 449: Hello, I’m Fredrick
‘Should I ask Greg if he has heard anything in the underground? The government usually knows about these things, so he might have heard something from someone.’
Mark thought about this for a moment, but he shook his head in the next second as he realized that it would not be possible. Greg was under arrest right now for his relationship with the NSA, and he wouldn’t be out until much later. Unlike Jeanne, who was only an affiliate of the NSA, Greg was working there full-time, so he was being investigated a lot more closely. The Superhuman Alliance was looking through the records of every member of the NSA to see who was working with Salazar and who was clean, so Mark knew they wouldn’t allow him to meet Greg for some time.
Mark drove out from Luna’s main gate and swerved into the highway as he thought about who else he could contact for information. Luna said that most guild leaders knew one or two people in the underground, didn’t she? Then, it might be best for me to try contacting leaders of guilds. Do I know any guild leaders with that sort of reach?
Mark hummed, and then his brow raised as a thought came to his mind suddenly. He did know someone like that. The two superhumans that helped him fight against the Ant-Based Calamity class anima a long time ago. Yellow Phantom and Lightening Rider.
They were only members of an A-rank guild, but it was still possible that they knew someone in the underground. It’s as good a place as any to start.
…
Buzz. Buzz.
The gate of a house in the upper part of City A suddenly buzzed late in the afternoon. It had been a week since the trials against Salazar and his execution, and the entire country had started to calm down from the high that they were on during that period. Life had gone back to normal for most people and the recent lack of serious anima attacks has allowed guilds and superhumans to also relax from the constant fights they had been in over the past few months.
[Yes, who is it?]
A female voice came through the intercom connected to the gate, asking who was there. The man who was at the gate was tall and handsome, with bright brown eyes and black hair. He was dressed in a brilliant black suit with a red tie. He carried a briefcase in his right hand and had on a Patek Phillipe gold watch. On his feet, he wore a pair of brightly polished brown leather shoes.
The man bent low and spoke calmly into the intercom.
“I am Fredrick Taylor, a teacher from Nature Academy. I am here to discuss some issues regarding your daughter, Maria. May I speak with you in person?”
The voice on the other end of the comms went silent after hearing this, but after a few seconds, she responded.
[What happened with my daughter?]
The voice now had an undertone of nervousness in it, and it was obvious that the person on the other end was getting worried about what might have happened to her daughter. The man schooled his features into a solemn look and spoke with a kind voice that made him seem very trustworthy.
“I think it would be best for us to talk about this in person. Your daughter is the vice president of Nature Academy, is she not? Maria Triston, right?”
[Yes, that’s her name.]
“Then you will most definitely want to hear what I have to say.”
The comms went silent for another few seconds before it finally buzzed once as a voice spoke.
[I will be right out. Please wait for me there.]
The comm went silent as the man stood back up and schooled his face back to its expressionless look. He brought up his right hand and glanced at his watch, frowning in irritation as he realized that he was already running behind schedule. They needed to complete this task before the day was over to stay ahead of schedule.
He waited for another two minutes before he saw a woman coming out from the house behind the gate. She was a rather beautiful woman, even with the wrinkles on her face that showed she was already getting old. She was wearing a pair of jeans and a loose t-shirt that she must’ve just thrown on in haste, and she looked very worried as she came towards the gate. The man gave the woman a pitiful look, and the woman quickly came towards the gate.
“Hello, I’m Victoria Triston. Maria is my daughter. You said you had something to tell me about her. What happened to her?”
The man brought his hand forward for a handshake while reintroducing himself.
“Hello, Victoria. My name is Fredrick, and it’s a pleasure to meet you. I just thought it was necessary to meet with you.”
Victoria eyed the man’s hand for a moment as he extended it past the gate bars. Victoria hesitated to shake it since she did not know him, but her need to find out what might’ve happened to her daughter outweighed whatever worry she had at that moment. She just extended her hand to grab the man’s hand in a handshake.
“It’s nice to meet you. Now, what happened to—”
WOOSH!
Victoria suddenly felt as if she was being squeezed through a straw. This squeezing sensation spread through her belly and out into the rest of her body as a force grabbed her and dragged her forward into a small portal that opened up on the man’s palm before she could say another word.
Once Victoria vanished, the man cleared his throat and looked around to make sure there were no witnesses. Once he was sure that the streets were empty, he looked at his watch again to check the time. With how quickly he finished this task, they were now back on schedule. The man smiled and turned to walk down the street towards his car.

Fredrick was a C-rank superhuman blessed by Consus, the Roman god of storage, with one of the most unique abilities in the world. With his blessing, he could absorb small objects and transport them into the briefcase that he always carried around with him. This ability was not only limited to inanimate objects; he could absorb as many objects as he wanted until he filled up the briefcase.
The briefcase was much larger on the inside than it looked on the outside, and the man estimated his own storage space to be about one hundred cubic meters. His ability was perfect for espionage as it allowed him to move around and grab things into his briefcase without anyone ever knowing about it. But there was a drawback to this blessing that prevented him from fully utilizing it in the way that he knew he could.
Fredrick could only absorb people and objects that were weaker than him. It was a drawback that almost destroyed all of Fredrick’s dreams the moment he realized it! When Fredrick first got his powers, he already imagined himself as one of the strongest superhumans with a lot of high-level weapons. He would steal or buy the weapons and store them away in his briefcase, and once he was in a fight, he would be able to summon as many high-class weapons as he wanted. But Fredrick couldn’t even absorb the smallest object if it was even one rank higher than him.
