Chapter 466: The Day It Happened
“I can grant you five minutes alone with her. That’s all.”
Arthur grit his teeth in anger and ran his hands across his face roughly. He wished he had more time than that, but he decided he wasn’t going to be greedy about it. Alec already looked like giving him those five minutes was going to be difficult, so asking for more would definitely not be a good idea. But Arthur knew what he had to do now. He would talk to Arit and make her tell them that they were wrong. They were all wrong. There was no way his daughter was a killer! There was no way she did what they were saying she did! Why would Arit kill anyone? Arit had wanted to be a doctor for as long as Arthur could remember, and she cared about human life more than anyone he knew! She would never kill anyone!
“Okay… Okay, w-what do you want me to do?”
Alec nodded and gestured to someone outside to enter, and two men came into the room and started to fit Arthur’s shirt with a wire.
“We are going to need you to separate Arit from Mark. We won’t be able to handle them both if they’re together, and if a fight breaks out, we don’t want a situation where they both run away. So we need you to take her as far away from him as possible. They’re currently living together in a hotel called The Red Lotus a few intersections away from this building and—”
Arthur suddenly interrupted Alec in surprise as he heard what Alec said.
“Wait, they’re staying in a hotel together? What about the apartment I got for them?”
“They haven’t been there for a long time now.”
“…Oh. Okay.”
Alec continued.
“You’re going to lure Arit down to the lobby of the hotel and out into the main road. We’ll take things from there.”
…
Outside the room, Turner was leaning against the wall beside the door while listening to what they were talking about inside. Turner knew that what he had done could be seen as backstabbing. Tina had made it painfully clear to him that telling Alec Ben about Maria’s accusations was the same as betraying Mark and Arit. But Turner didn’t care about what they thought of him. Turner wasn’t close friends with either Arit or Mark, and he did what he did because he knew that it was the right thing to do.
And besides, this was the best option for everyone since it would give both Arit and Mark a chance to defend themselves from the accusation. If Maria’s accusations were lies and it turned out that Arit and Mark were innocent, then they would be able to prove it legally. A small part of him almost felt bad for the part he played in this, but Turner crushed that part of himself. He was not going to feel bad for doing the right thing.
“You’re going to lure Arit down to the lobby of the hotel and out into the main road. We’ll take things from there.”
Alec finally finished giving instructions to Arthur, and Turner ran a hand through his blonde hair as he prepared to leave. At the other end of the hallway, Turner watched as Tina pushed off a wall and started to walk away. Turner spoke up and asked her where she was going.
“You better not be going to talk to Mark about this.”
Tina never stopped in her stride, and she never turned around to even regard her brother, but her words were like a sword that stabbed Turner in the chest.
“Don’t talk to me, you fucking rat.”
…
The day it all happened started just like any other day in the Vanitas household. Mark woke up calmly and sat up in bed. He glanced to his side and saw that Arit had already woken up, and after freshening up, he went out to see Arit and Talia laughing together in the kitchen. Jeanne was on a call in the living room, and she waved at Mark with a smile when he passed by.
Mark gave her a small nod in response before he went over to the kitchen to meet Arit and Talia. He kissed his girls, and then when they were done cooking, they all sat down to eat breakfast.
The day was sunny, and there was hardly any material from school, so Arit and Mark both had some free time to relax and just laze around. Ever since Salazar was killed, there haven’t been many Anima attacks on the city, so Mark hasn’t needed to go out much. Mark only went out once or twice a week to deal with any attack that was too close to the hotel, and that was it.
And since Pat was still busy for now, Mark figured that it would be best to just allow the other guilds to handle the few disaster and calamity classes that appeared in the rest of the city.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
A knock on the door drew Mark’s attention from his place on the couch, and he heard Arit saying that she would get it. Arit came out from the kitchen with an apron around her waist. She had been practicing another one of her mother’s cake recipes, so there was some flour on her hands that she cleaned with the apron before she looked through the peephole. Once she looked through it, Arit’s eyes widened in shock!
“Dad? DAD!!”
Arit opened the door wide and jumped into her father’s arms happily while laughing, and Arthur smiled as he caught his daughter in his hands. He laughed along with her and held her close while swinging her around happily. Finally, after what seemed like forever, he allowed her to come down and he stared at his little girl.
“You’ve grown so big, baby girl! Look at you! I almost didn’t recognize you!”
Arit laughed when her father said this! She had no idea her father was coming back to the country already!

“Why didn’t you tell me that you were coming back, Dad!? I would’ve come to get you from the airport!”
Arthur laughed and just told Arit that he didn’t plan to come back so soon either; he just decided to come see her. Arit grinned so wide that Arthur thought her mouth would split in two. She was so happy to see him, and for a moment right then, Arthur hoped to God that Alec had been wrong.
Arit blinked as she suddenly realized that there was someone else standing beside Arthur, and she gave the manager of the hotel a greeting. The manager smiled and greeted Arit back. When the manager heard from Arthur that he wanted to see Arit and Mark, she initially wanted to send them a message first to tell them about Arthur, but Arthur told her that he was Arit’s father and he wanted this to be a surprise. So, she relented and allowed him to come up only if she and a security guard came along. The manager knew that there was very little that could harm Ghost at all, but their hotel prided itself on the security of their guests no matter what. She wouldn’t just allow anyone to go up without supervision.
Once the manager was sure that Arthur had been telling the truth, she gave them both a bow before turning to leave the corridor with the security guard. Arit realized that she had been keeping her father standing outside all this while, and she blushed in embarrassment as she told him to come in. She took his hand and led him inside, and her father couldn’t help the look of awe on his face as he saw the enormous apartment. This is a freaking villa!
