Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 492
Chapter 492: German Forces
“We need KING.”
General Raj shook his head and turned away from the screen as he felt his phone buzzing in his pocket. There was no way for them to get KING back. He was dead, and there was nothing they could do about it.
He pulled out his phone and saw that it was a call from his superior. He immediately told the woman beside him to continue what she had been doing and answered the call.
“Sir?”
The person on the other end of the call was George, the deputy director of the Superhuman Alliance. He had been in this building when the outbreak of anima began and was currently standing in a large room similar to the one General Raj was in, with many other Superhuman Alliance agents watching what was happening on the large screen in front of them.
Normally, George was a timid, nervous man, and General Raj thought he was someone that anyone could easily walk over. Honestly, General Raj had no idea why George was made the deputy director, and if not for the fact that Henry Ford himself vouched for him, then no one would have taken George’s authority seriously. But when George spoke over the phone, General Raj could tell that George was dead serious at that moment.
“Raj, what do you think you are doing? Why am I seeing the guilds moving away from the outskirts? There are still civilians there.”
General Raj knew that this call was coming and quickly started to explain what he and Patrick had discussed to George. It only took a few seconds to tell George about everything, and as he spoke, General Raj could feel George growing more and more tense through the phone. Finally, after he said everything, George released a shaky breath.
“God help us. You’re leaving all those people to die?”
General Raj stayed silent, and George knew that they didn’t have any
other choice. Raj spoke up again.
“What about Director Ford? I heard he left the country a few days after the Salazar incident was concluded and Salazar was executed. Is he already on his way back?”
“Yes, he is, but he won’t get here until tomorrow morning. We have to hold on for at least seven hours somehow.”
Seven hours. More than three million people could die in that time.
General Raj frowned as he thought about this, and he tried to think of a way to reduce the number of casualties at that time. Nighttime was the worst period for fighting against anima since the anima could use the darkness as cover and perform sneak attacks or ambushes. And since there were a lot of humans with no powers trapped in cities all around America, there was no telling just how many of them would die to the anima.
“Director Ford informed me that he has sent out an SOS to our allies in Germany, and they have promised to send reinforcements to aid us. But the reinforcements are also going to take some time due to the distance. At the earliest, they will not be here till five in the morning tomorrow.”
General Raj immediately frowned in distaste. He knew about the German forces, and he knew just how militaristic the Germans were. America and Germany had been on good terms for the past two years after America aided Germany in a large-scale Eldritch anima swarm that almost destroyed more than half of the country. General Raj knew that the only reason Germany was sending out troops at all was because they owed America for helping them.
The German superhuman society was very different from America. Unlike the Americans, who gave their citizens a lot of freedom and allowed them to form guilds freely, Germany was a lot stricter, and they made sure that every single superhuman was part of their army. Right now, in terms of military power alone, Germany had the strongest force in the entire world. But that didn’t mean they were the strongest country at all. That honor belonged to Japan, with America being a close second.
But even though Germany and America were on good terms now, that didn’t mean they could just ignore all the years of bad blood between the two countries. From his tone, it was obvious that Raj still had a distaste for the Germans.
“We’ll try our best to hold on until the Germans send in their forces. I hope they send superhumans who can actually aid us, rather than just desk warmers. I already feel useless having to sit here and not do anything; it would be even worse if the Germans were the ones to join us.”
“Yes, I hope so too. In the meantime, please keep me updated on any changes like the ones you just made. It’s not a pretty sight watching people get killed without any protection, and I want to at least know why.”
“Of course, sir.”
…
[The Alpha City – Formerly Washington D.C.]
BOOM!
The sound of explosions echoed through the area as multiple anima were being held back by the military personnel positioned all around the city. Broken houses, with large portions cracked out from their structure littered the roads, and multiple cars had been set ablaze on the roadside from the accidents that occurred during the initial impact of the anima.
The soldiers who were trying their best to cover the retreat of the few civilians left alive in the city had formed a long line of defensive shields and heavy artillery close to the exit of the city, and they were unleashing all of their weapons on the large hulking beasts that were constantly moving forward. The ammunition the army was using was capable of handling multiple disaster classes easily, but the largest monster there was a high-level Calamity that stood head and shoulders taller than every building in the area. Every step it took sent tremors through the ground, and the bullets the army was using only seemed to sting it slightly before bouncing off its body.
If not for how many weapons there were, the soldiers knew that anima would have just ignored the bullets and attacked. But since there were so many, it was difficult for the monster to walk forward. Even a giant would be slightly overwhelmed if he was faced with hundreds of thousands of ants every second.
In the center of Alpha City stood the White House. But it was no longer as grand and beautiful as it once was. The large white building had been razed and broken into rubble at multiple places. Flames blazed uncontrollably across the area, and the only sound that could be heard was the grunts and groans of multiple anima that were walking around the White House aimlessly.
Inside the White House was just as dangerous as the outside. The building was swarmed with anima. There were many dead bodies of military personnel as well as former political workers lying on the ground around the building corridors, and from the number of bullets and guns lying around, you would immediately know that the soldiers fought a good battle before they died.
