Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 494
Chapter 494: Internal Conflict
The images that General Raj and George were seeing through the satellite were also being transmitted directly to Marilyn. There was a small box on the bottom right side of the television that showed the current estimated death toll, and Marilyn felt her heart squeeze at the unbelievable number of people who had died already. If this many people were already dead, then just how many more would die soon?
[~1.5 million dead]
Marilyn rubbed her hand through her face and took a deep breath. She couldn’t allow this to affect her too much. She was the president, and she needed to stand strong. What would happen if they needed her to make a public announcement or something? She couldn’t do it when she was acting like this.
The president took in a shuddering breath and tried to calm herself. She knew that the likelihood of them needing her for a public announcement was very low, especially since everyone who could possibly watch the announcement was either dead or running for their lives. Although she was the president, she hadn’t had much administrative control over the country for a long time now. Ever since the dawn of the age of superhumans, the need for a president has diminished greatly. Now the only thing she did was make sure the Superhuman Alliance and other superhuman agencies didn’t trample on the rights of the normal citizens who couldn’t fight back against them. As for actually running the country, the president knew that the executives of the Superhuman Alliance were the ones in charge.
“Madam President, I just got the news that your husband and child have been taken to the bunker located in City S. They are safe.”
Marilyn sighed thankfully once she heard that. The outbreak was so sudden that she didn’t have any time to leave the office while her husband and child were still at home, so she was worried that they had been caught by the anima as well. She was just glad that they were okay.
“What about the soldiers outside? Are they done getting rid of the anima?”
The man who had spoken to Marilyn suddenly deflated sadly as he shook his head. Marilyn turned away from the TV and asked him what had happened. His expression was making her grow nervous. The man stayed silent for a second longer before he spoke up.
“The soldiers outside the White House have managed to destroy more than twenty percent of the anima roaming the streets, but it won’t be long before they are overwhelmed by the remaining anima. As for the soldiers inside the White House… they are all dead.”
What?
Marilyn stood up immediately as she felt fear fill her heart. If the soldiers were dead, then what does that mean? Were the soldiers fighting against anima inside the White House?
“What about the monsters? Did the soldiers kill…?”
Marilyn didn’t even need to ask the question before the man shook his head, and Marilyn almost fell back into her seat. She could feel a chill spreading through her body, and the mere thought of dying made her almost freeze up.
The man spoke up before Marilyn could allow herself to lose hope.
“Do not worry, ma’am. This bunker is properly hidden, and it is made from state-of-the-art technology. I doubt the anima can find it, and even if they do, it is strong enough that even S ranks wouldn’t be able to break in easily. And if the anima manage to break through, then we are more than prepared to lay down our lives for you.”
With Marilyn in the bunker were ten other people. Some of them were other members of the presidential staff, but most wore suits and dark sunglasses while standing at attention close to the exit. They were from the Secret Service meant to protect the president, and they were all between A and S rank. The man was confident that they could protect the president in the worst-case scenario.
The president smiled gratefully as she finally allowed herself to calm down a little. She never even considered that the monsters outside might be too strong for the Secret Service agents to handle. Her mind didn’t want to go down that rabbit hole. Instead, she just wanted to believe that the agents could protect her if they were ever in a bad situation.
BANG!
BANG!
BANG!
The entire room suddenly started to tremble as a massive force impacted the bunker door! The president immediately stood back up and backed away to the far wall with the other members of her staff as her heart began to race! Didn’t this man just say they couldn’t find them here!? That fucking liar!
The impacts continued to echo through the entire room as the large hornet anima shot their lasers at the bunker doors! Although the agent was right about the bunker being well hidden, he did not consider that the anima were not regular people who only used their senses to find their enemies. The anima had an unnatural ability to tell where their natural enemy was. That is why it is so easy for an anima to pick out a superhuman even in the midst of a large crowd. This allows the anima to track down and eliminate superhumans regardless of where they are.
And since there were multiple superhumans inside the bunker with the president, the anima were able to pinpoint the exact location of the bunker easily!
The hornets continued to blast the bunker door with their lasers, but it was not having enough effect. They buzzed around for a few moments as they tried to think of something to do. But then they stopped as another anima appeared from the door leading to the president’s office. This anima was a large wolf that was more than three meters tall. It had a nasty look on its face as it growled at everything around it, and the hornets all scrambled to get away from the door as they recognized the threat that the wolf possessed. The hornet leading the group came forward threateningly as it buzzed in front of the wolf to show off its stinger.
The wolf was a high-level Calamity anima, and just like the hornets, it also had a large group of anima following behind it. Its followers were mainly other wolves, but there were also other random types of anima following behind it, and they all growled threateningly at the hornets as the two groups faced off against one another.
The hornet, trying not to be intimidated by the wolf, powered up its stinger and commanded its followers to do the same. It was basically trying to assert dominance here and make the wolf know that it was here first, so it would have the spoils from the humans. But the wolf seemed to laugh in its face as it suddenly roared!
ROAR!
The wolf charged forward, and the hornet fired its laser from the stinger! The wolf immediately jumped to the side to avoid it, before leaping into the air and swiping its claws across where the hornet had just been! The hornet flew back to avoid getting hit by the wolf!
