Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 510
Chapter 510: The Alphas
The only limitation to Frank Paul’s power was that he could not control objects that he hadn’t been touching, and he had a limited amount of mana that restricted how much he could do with his abilities. If not for these constraints, he might have been able to reach EPIC Rank already.
Frank ignored the directive from the military telling him to go to City S since he was not a soldier and made it his duty to protect his city. As far as Frank was concerned, he didn’t care what happened to th rest of the country, so long as his city was still standing. Let the other superhumans handle the remaining anima.
There were others like him all over the continent who took it upon themselves to defend one or two cities that they considered their own. The members of the DForce Guild, where Jane—Luna’s former teammate—was a part of, had made it their mission to protect one of the coasts from anima invasions coming through the ocean. This was one of the most challenging jobs because of how dangerous the anima emerging from the ocean were. There wasn’t a single one among them that was below high-level Disaster class, and the members of the DForce Guild had to join forces with the former members of the Neptune Guild, which disbanded long ago, to hold them back.
There were various people defending the coastline leading to the major cities in America, and although they were trying their best, George could not see them holding the anima back for much longer. The anima were slowly pushing against their defenses, and before long, George could tell that they would break through.
“Are we all going to die, George?”
George suddenly turned to his side when he heard the president speaking, and he saw her staring straight at the fight happening on the outskirts of City S. This was where the main battle was taking place. It was the place where things seemed to be do or die the most. There were more than a hundred thousand superhumans spread out in the cities surrounding City S, and they were fighting against what George could only describe as a sea of anima.
The anima were raging forward nonstop, tearing through everything that the humans were putting up and trying their best to get through. The superhumans had done their best to keep the anima at a distance from City S since that city was currently being used as a safe haven for all the non-superhumans who couldn’t fight against the anima. But it was obvious that the anima were not happy about this and were trying their best to get into City S.
George ran his hand across his face with a depressing sigh.
“I don’t know, Madam President. The cities around us are large, so there is a likelihood that the superhumans will be able to stop the anima before they can make it all the way to City S.”
“A likelihood? I am not just talking about this city; I am talking about the entire country. Look at the screen, George. Our country is on fire.”
George turned to the screen again, and he felt his face soften before he looked away helplessly. He did not have anything to say to Marylin about this situation. It was something that no one predicted would happen. Not after that Armageddon that almost killed them all years ago. If it wasn’t so sudden and unexpected, then maybe they would have been able to save more people, but because it was so sudden, they were helpless.
The only saving grace was the fact that there were more people who could fight against the anima now than there were back then.
Suddenly, Marylin said something that shocked George.
“The military council has been talking recently. Henry Ford has informed them that there will be reinforcements from Germany arriving soon, but they aren’t putting their hope in the Germans. They’ve considered the possibility of using multiple airstrikes. I am only telling you this because you are the deputy director, but the cities surrounding City S might be leveled to prevent the animals from getting into City S.”
George turned to Marylin with his eyes wide in shock! What the hell was she talking about right now? An airstrike!? Can’t she see what is happening on the screen!? If they authorize an airstrike now, then it would be the same as sending all the weaker superhumans to their graves! There is no way the superhumans will be able to avoid getting hit along with the anima!
George made sure to whisper so that only Marylin could hear him, but the heated anger in his voice could not be hidden.
“They can’t do that! The superhumans are trying their best to save the country, and this is the best thing they could come up with!? Are they even watching the footage?”
“What would you have them do? The superhumans might be fighting the good fight for now, but we cannot see an end to the horde of anima anytime soon. There are multiple Calamity Class animals all over the country, and even more are appearing from God knows where. I don’t want to do this either, George, but we don’t have a choice.”
“Look, Alec Ben is taking down an Eldritch! It’s huge!”
Someone sitting at the side suddenly yelled out with a strange sense of excitement, and they both turned to look at the screen as well. On the screen showing the outskirts of City S, they could see Alec fighting against a large ant-based Elder Eldritch. The monster had large pincers in its mouth and a tough chitin exoskeleton that prevented anyone from dealing a serious blow to it. There were other high-level Calamity classes as well as lower-ranked Eldritch monsters all around the animals, and George could only thank his god that there hadn’t been an Armageddon class appearing yet. From what George was seeing, the only reason why more of America hadn’t been destroyed yet was because the superhumans had become a lot stronger than they were four years ago. If an Armageddon like the one from four years ago showed up, then there was only a small chance that they might be able to hold it back.
But if a stronger one appeared, they wouldn’t stand a chance.
Alec Ben was trying his best to draw the giant Elder Eldritch ant to him while the other superhumans kept the other anima at a distance to give him space to work. He was being helped by a man with long hair tied in a ponytail behind his head who was carrying two large machine guns under his arms. The man wore the same outfit as the two Alphas that were standing on either side of the president, and everyone in the room knew that they were from the same organization.
The president asked the Alphas who that man was, and the female Alpha who called herself Alpha Ten said that it was Alpha Two, the second in command of their unit. Alpha Two was using the two large machine guns expertly. He would wait for Alec Ben to draw the monster forward, and then when the monster was focused on Alec, he would attack one of the monster’s legs to reduce its mobility. That way, it wouldn’t be able to get away from them, and Alec would have more freedom to move around and attack with his sword while the monster was trying to get Alpha Two away.
