Chapter 534: The King And His Clean-Up Crew
His voice was sarcastic and more than a little condescending, but Mark didn’t allow that to affect him. Mark knew that Alpha Two was from the government, so he wouldn’t be on Mark’s side with this plan no matter what. After all, Henry already said that he didn’t want Mark to take the anima to the northern part of the country, so Mark doing this was basically him giving a middle finger to the government.
Mark spoke up calmly.
“The monster is after me. If I expose myself and draw its attention, then it’ll follow me. The only thing is that I won’t be able to watch the area and the other superhumans while drawing it to City H. It’ll be too hectic for me to look out for anything like that. That’s where the rest of you come in. I need you all to make sure the other superhumans don’t get killed when I’m focused on the monster. Also, try to keep the damage to the area to a minimum.”
Ida’s thick German accent filtered through the comms with an irritated undertone in it.
“So we are just your cleanup crew?”
Mark nodded without bothering to acknowledge the disbelief in her voice.
“Until we get to City H, yes, you are. This isn’t the first time I’ve faced something like this. It’s smarter than regular anima, so anything but a direct approach will not work against it. Just do what I say until then, and I can assure you we will win. I swear it on my soul.”
The comms all went silent at such a declaration. It almost felt like Mark was talking about something far more intense than just this battle, and they knew that Mark was not playing around at all.
They had no idea that Mark had literally bet his soul on this and that he had no choice but to win.
Mark was betting everything on this plan and was more than certain that he would be able to kill the monster if they went ahead with this.
The first person to agree to the plan, unsurprisingly, was Luna. The first time Mark heard her talk through the comms, a sudden rush of relief ran through his body, and he could almost feel a small smile tugging at the edge of his mouth. Mark felt glad to hear her voice again.
“I agree to the plan. It seems like the most sensible way to deal with things over here. The Moonlight Guild is at the Vanguard Guild’s disposal. The Vanguard Guild can use them in moving the smaller anima around however you want while we’re dealing with the Armageddon.”
Once Luna agreed, the other ELITE Rankers seemed to also find their voice as they decided that it would not hurt to follow Mark’s plan. No one else had a better plan for now, and since Mark was sure that this plan would lead to the least number of casualties, they didn’t have any right to just disregard it.
Mark nodded once he had all their consent and spoke up to Pat.
“Pat, tap into the comms of the other guilds and have them move the anima over to the other side of the city. The Moonlight Guild will take point and handle any Eldritch that shows up while the others try their best against the Calamities and Disaster Classes. They should try to figure out a way to stop the anima from following behind us—”
“I can help with that.”
Mark stopped talking as another voice spoke up. This time, what Mark felt in his chest wasn’t just relief, it was like an all-encompassing surge of adrenaline that forced his mouth into a grin. Now this was a voice he definitely missed.
“Hey, babe.”
Mark spoke up in such an intimate manner that every other person on the comm became slightly uncomfortable just from hearing it. But Mark didn’t care at all about what they thought, and neither did Arit as her lips split into a loving smile.
“Hey, Mark.”
Arit hadn’t meant to speak up when she did, but once she heard Mark talking about wanting to draw the monster to him as bait, she desperately wanted to say something about how dangerous of a plan that was. Mark could get seriously hurt if any of the anima around attacked him while he was focusing on drawing the monster away. But since all the ELITEs had already agreed to the plan, Arit couldn’t say anything to refute it. Instead, she decided she would try her best to help out with keeping the other anima away from Mark. That way, things would be a lot safer for him.
“Is that the monster? Why is she on this call?”
Alpha Two’s voice came through the comms again once he heard Arit’s voice and was able to figure out who she was. Mark turned towards where Alpha Two was standing, and only his stare from such a massive distance was enough to cow the man, making him look away and stay silent for the rest of the call. Mark spoke to Arit.
“Are the anima drawn to you?”
Arit shook her head and told Mark that they weren’t. But they were afraid of her, so it wouldn’t be difficult for her to block the path that they wanted to take. Along with the other superhumans, if Arit released enough of her pressure, most anima would not dare to pass. Mark nodded to the plan. He wasn’t too happy about Arit being right on the battlefield, but he couldn’t be overprotective in the middle of such a battle.
Mark spoke up again.
“Luna, make sure your guild members are with Arit when she is holding the anima back. She won’t be able to fight for long if she’s using up her mana to act as a wall for us. That’s enough talk. From here on, listen to my vice captain’s words down to the T. He’s our eyes and ears, and one mistake on your part could fuck everything up.”
Luna accepted the order, and Ida did as well, although she was a lot less trusting of the entire plan. Alpha Two grumbled, Alec remained silent, and Arit spoke up to Mark.
“Be careful, Mark.”
Mark narrowed his eyes at the giant monster before stepping close to the edge of the building and increasing his aura to insane levels. Everyone in ELITE Rank immediately felt their stamina, power, and mana levels rising rapidly. Luna was already used to feeling this increase in power whenever she was fighting alongside Mark, so she wasn’t that surprised by it, but the rest of them were completely shocked to realize that their fatigue and tiredness were gone!
