Chapter 535: The Hunter and The Hunted
“Let’s get this shit started.”
Once the other ELITE Ranks saw Mark releasing his aura, they all realized that Mark was not going to give any form of go-ahead before starting! They had already begun, and each of them was expected to simply carry out their own part of the plan without any problems! Luna was immediately on the move! After fighting against Arit, then against Sasha, and finally against multiple Calamity classes and the Armageddon, Luna was running close to empty on Mana. She barely had forty percent of her full capacity.
But now that she had the boost in stamina and mana from both Mark’s title as well as the Fangs of Heaven, she was able to kickstart her battle instincts once more and rush in to support Mark.
Luna decided that her role in all this would be to follow right behind Mark and the monster and aid Mark if he ever needed help.
Alec Ben also moved to start clearing out the people that were in the area around where the Armageddon was going to be drawn to, and both Ida and Alpha Two started to prepare themselves to provide damage support. Arit gave Luna a nod before she flew off into the sky, following Pat’s orders to meet up with other members of the Moonlight Guild where the Anima horde was thickest.
Once Mark released his aura, the Armageddon-class Anima lost all interest in anything else and turned towards him with a low, angry growl. Mark allowed a mocking grin to spread across his face as he saw the Armageddon preparing for an attack, and in the next moment, Mark was gone!
Mark barreled down the street like a bat out of hell as the Armageddon unleashed a massive laser beam, destroying the building he had once been standing on and sending it to the ground in a fiery explosion. Everyone held their breaths for a second, wondering if Mark’s plan was going to work. And just like Mark had predicted, rather than staying in one place, the monster turned in the direction Mark had just run in and slowly started to chase after him!
Pat breathed a sigh of relief through the comms and quickly started to talk to everyone while tapping the keys on his keyboard quickly.
[Alright, Mark, remember you can’t move too fast. We don’t know how quickly the Armageddon can move, so you need to make sure you stay in its line of sight. Do you think you have enough mana to make it all the way to City Hall without any breaks?]
Mark grunted in the affirmative as he dodged around a large piece of a building that the Armageddon threw at him! He ran into a building at the side and a large hand slammed into the window of the floor he was on!
The Armageddon swung its hand into the window before sweeping across the entire floor, trying to toss Mark out of the building and grab him, but Mark easily jumped out from the window on the other side of the building and free-fell for a few seconds before preparing to launch a chain at another building to swing over to it!
A platform suddenly appeared under Mark’s feet and caught him. Mark thanked Luan quickly as he blasted off the platform, sending himself over to the next building and crashing through a window before continuing the run. The roar of the enraged monster followed Mark through all of this.
Pat continued to talk.
[Alec, there’s a small group to your left that needs help. Alpha Two will stand in while you handle it. Luna, freeze the left side of the road where the monster’s feet are about to land.]
Alec followed Pat’s instructions and went to help out the stranded superhumans, and Luna did as she was told, freezing the road and causing the monster’s foot to slip once it landed on the smooth ice. This prevented the monster’s large swing from connecting with the building that Mark was in, and it had to hold onto the building beside it to support itself!
Mark shot out from the window and his chain flew out, wrapping around the monster’s neck, allowing Mark to drag himself forward in one pull and deliver a wicked double kick to the side of the monster’s head while it was unbalanced!
BOOM!
The Armageddon fell through the building it had been holding onto, roaring in anger as it tried to swipe at Mark, but Mark was already gone before it could do that, and its crystal came to life, trying to shoot at Mark’s retreating figure!
“Good shit!”
Alpha Two came in clutch at the perfect moment as he appeared right below the monster’s head, with the bazooka in his left hand aimed straight at the monster’s jaw!
TOOM!
BOOM!
The point-blank explosion sent the monster’s head upward, redirecting the laser beam and allowing it to sail harmlessly into the sky above the city! The Armageddon shook its head in annoyance as it tried to get rid of the smoke from the explosion, and Alpha Two quickly moved out of the way as the beast started to get up to its full height once more. Alpha Two hid behind a large pile of rubble on the other side of the street and the monster looked around futilely for a few seconds to try and find him.
After not being able to see him, the monster was once more drawn toward Mark by his aura, and it released a loud roar as it continued its trek after Mark.
This trend continued for a while. The superhumans kept drawing the Armageddon toward the desired city, while Mark would stay just out of its reach so that it followed him. There were many times when they had extremely close calls. Either Mark would get too close to the Armageddon and almost get caught, or one of the superhumans around wouldn’t be able to get out of the way fast enough, and they would get injured by the passing Armageddon. But for the most part, Mark and Pat’s plan worked without any issues.
The Armageddon was a smart beast, so it knew it was being led away toward another area, but even though it knew this, that didn’t mean it could do anything about its desire to defeat Mark. Its desperate urge to kill Mark was far greater than its worry about whatever the humans were planning, so it simply ignored all of their plans and continued to follow after Mark.
After a few minutes, the sun in the sky started to rise higher, bathing the area in yellow and granting the superhumans a better view of what they were fighting against. The Armageddon’s patchwork skin and dark, cavernous mouth gave more than one superhuman a scare. They hadn’t really seen the Armageddon’s skin properly due to how dark it was before, but now that they could see it, they were able to tell that it was a combination of skin from various Anima layered over one another like some grotesque Frankenstein monster. Mark had to admit, Salazar had really outdone himself with this shit.
‘Only that bastard would be capable of making a monster this fucking ugly.’
