Chapter 536: He Can’t Be Faster Than Me
‘Only that bastard would be capable of making a monster this fucking ugly.’
The crystal on the monster’s head glowed with a deep red light, and Mark braced himself for another attack just before the monster fired at him from a distance! Mark was already swinging out of the way using his chain, and he crashed through the window of another building as a massive explosion went off behind him.
KA-BOOM!
Mark slid to a stop and walked over to the edge of the window, waiting patiently as the Armageddon neared. His comm buzzed, and Mark put his hand up to listen to the person calling.
Surprisingly, it was Alec Ben who had called. Alec spoke in a professional tone that didn’t show any emotion at all, and Mark couldn’t tell if Alec Ben was happy or angry that he had to work with someone he was trying to arrest only a few hours ago.
[GHOST, there’s a problem. A small school bus was crushed by a building in the monster’s path. There were children inside. I’ve taken care of most of them, but one was impaled in the stomach by a pipe from a falling building. If I move it, she’ll die. And since there are no healers close by, it’ll be difficult to get her to safety. Can you shift the monster a few meters to the right? It’ll still be on the right path, but it’ll miss the kid.]
That was a tall request.
Mark frowned in irritation when he heard what Alec Ben asked for. It would be nearly impossible to move the monster away like that without causing serious damage to other parts of the city. They were currently walking down a road with tall buildings on either side and once Mark moved the monster to the left or right, it would break through the buildings to try and follow him.
Mark spoke up.
“How far away are you?”
[About a kilometer away from—]
DOON!
“Where is she?”
Alec Ben’s eyes widened as Mark suddenly appeared beside him once he gave his position. For the first time in his life, Alec Ben was at a loss for words while witnessing someone else’s speed!
The superhumans had been moving at a sedate pace all this while so that the Armageddon could follow Mark, so no one had seen Mark move as quickly as he could. Was this how fast Mark could move if he really tried?! He was almost faster than Alec Ben! If not for the fact that, unlike Alec Ben, Mark’s movement caused sonic booms to ripple through the air, Mark would’ve been able to sneak up on Alec easily!
Alec pointed to the area where the little girl was lying down. There was a large slab on top of her, and she was crying profusely as her class teacher, a pretty young woman with disheveled brown hair, watched on. There was some blood leaking from her side, and when Mark looked closely, he could see that there was a large pipe stuck in her stomach. It probably hadn’t punctured anything important if she still had the energy to cry, so Mark just walked over. The teacher was stunned once she saw Mark and recognized him as Ghost, and even in such a serious situation, she couldn’t stop herself from trying to fix her hair in front of him.
[Mark, you need to hurry. The monster can’t see you. It’s getting confused.]
Mark hummed and told Pat to hold on—this would only take a second. Mark told the teacher to stand back, and then he spoke to the little girl.
“How old are you?”
The girl sniffled a few times to stop her tears, and then she muttered that she was eleven. Mark nodded. That was good.
“Then you’ll be able to understand what I’m about to say. You won’t die as long as I’m here, so bear the pain for a moment, alright? Grit your teeth.”
The girl was confused by what Mark was saying, but Mark frowned and commanded her to grit her teeth, and she immediately obeyed and did just that. In the next moment, Mark lifted the slab like paper off her body, and the girl screamed in pain! The blood flowed even more freely, and the teacher, who had been watching in worry, started to cry along with the girl.
But then a green hue spread across the area as Mark activated his [Healing Aura], and everyone felt their bodies tingle from the feeling of Mark’s mana washing over them. Mark watched both his mana and the girl’s wound closely as he saw the skin around her wound knitting itself together. After leveling up his mana so much, Mark no longer felt the strain on his mana that he normally would whenever he was using this skill. The skill took 150 MP per second to heal the girl’s wound, and after five seconds and 750 mana points, Mark deactivated the skill once he was sure that the girl was no longer in any form of danger.
The girl touched the pinkish skin around her former wound with a look of awe in her eyes, almost not believing that she had been injured just a few seconds ago. When she looked back at Mark, it was as if she was looking at a god. Mark smiled at her and then told Alec to take the teacher and student away, but before he could do that, the girl leaped up and wrapped Mark in a hug. Mark was only stunned for a second before he smiled and returned the hug. The little girl reminded Mark of Talia a lot, and he couldn’t stop himself from giving her a small affectionate squeeze in return. He pulled back after another second.
“Come on, you need to leave. There’s something dangerous coming, and I need you to be safe.”
The girl had a huge blush on her face when Mark told her that he wanted her to be safe. In her mind, Mark looked like a prince trying to protect his princess. She gazed up at Mark with so much devotion that Mark couldn’t help but pet her head before bringing them both to their feet. The teacher quickly tried to give Mark a hug as well, but Mark just gave her a look, and she chuckled nervously and looked down with a blush while backing away.
Mark told Alec to take them away, and Alec carried them both and flashed toward a safe area at superhuman speed. Mark was able to follow Alec with his eyes now that his stats were so much higher, and Mark would never know how much distress that simple act caused Alec.
In his mind, Alec was already making a new resolution.
‘I need to start training again. He can’t be faster than me.’
Alec didn’t know it, but Mark’s recent feat sparked a new feeling of competitiveness that would see him challenging Mark many times. Mark felt the tremors under his feet from the monster’s movement, and he watched calmly as the monster approached from a distance. Once the monster was within sight, Mark grinned at it, and it roared at Mark in anger once it laid eyes on him!

Its crystal started to glow, and Mark frowned.
And then he moved!
