Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 542
Chapter 542: GHOST
Mark pulled his arm back and the world blurred into varying shades of grey as space itself seemed to converge at the center of Mark’s fist! Mark roared in agitation as he flew down towards the crystal, and at the moment his fist touched the crystal, time seemed to crawl to a stop before space itself imploded!
[Divergent Fist]!
[Sonic Impact: Lightning]!
BZZT!
BOOM!
The shockwave that flew out from Mark’s fist after that hit was so intense that it could be felt by the helicopters flying over the city more than three kilometers away! The back of the Armageddon’s head cracked open from the intense shockwave, and it felt its brain rattle uncontrollably!
The anima that had been charging towards the Armageddon, as well as all the ELITE ranks that were around the battle, immediately stopped what they were doing and looked down at the Armageddon, waiting to see what the result of Mark’s attack was.
The dust cloud surrounding the monster slowly cleared up, and once it did, it revealed a victorious Mark standing on the head of a dead Armageddon.
At that moment, a ripple swept across the entire country, a warning and a promise to every single anima out there. The anima that Alec Ben had been holding back seemed to immediately lose all interest in him as they turned tail and ran. Their very instincts warned them at that moment not to remain around after the death of their strongest.
All over America, the remaining anima that Arit and the rest of the superhumans had been fighting against began to try and get away from the scene of the battle. It was like a wolf pack that would run away once the Alpha was dead. Once the Armageddon that was leading their charge died, the rest of the anima lost the courage to fight.
Arit had been in the sky, trying her best to prevent the Calamity and Disaster class anima from getting to Mark. A lot of them had managed to get past already, but Arit was doing everything she could to hold back as many as possible and she was surprised when they all turned away from her and started to run, moving towards the ocean faster than Arit could follow.
The opposite scene was taking place amongst the humans. The realization that GHOST had just killed an Armageddon-class anima seemed to dawn on them slowly, and they couldn’t believe it for the first few seconds, but then the entire country erupted in cheers as loud voices screamed from the bunkers all around America!
The soldiers and superhumans on the battleground fell to their asses in relief and joy as they managed to survive the battle, and the civilians in the bunkers could be heard chanting one name over and over again in celebration of their victory!
“GHOST! GHOST! GHOST!”
“GHOST! GHOST! GHOST! GHOST”
“GHOST! GHOST! GHOST!”
“GHOST! GHOST! GHOST! GHOST”
It was a madhouse no matter where you looked, and everyone in the country felt relief and immeasurable joy taking hold of them all at once! There wasn’t a single person in the country whose respect and admiration for GHOST didn’t shoot through the roof at that moment.
People chanted and hugged each other, grateful that they had managed to live through the disaster that almost brought the country to its knees for a second time.
The rich politicians who had been in the bunkers were not silent either as they also cheered and clapped for GHOST’s achievements, grateful that they were going to survive. President Marylin and George looked toward each other in the midst of the commotion and they smiled as they felt relief course through their bodies. They both knew that this victory meant they would not need to use the missiles anymore and they felt happy because they wouldn’t have to kill thousands of humans in such a desperate attack!
But that did not mean it was a joyful period for everyone.
Some superhumans who had been on the battlefield with their friends and comrades went out to try and find the remains of those who did not survive. The bodies of civilians littered the region, painting a bloody scene in many cities, and the broken and damaged houses reminded the entire country that the road to recovery was going to be a long and tiring one.
There were still stray anima hiding fearfully within some of the buildings, and the superhumans were going to have to fight against them before reclaiming the properties.
But no one was as sober as the man himself.
Mark stood over the body of Fiona with a pained look in his eyes. After using the sonic impact, the monster’s head was destroyed, and its brain matter flew out from behind its head. Since Mark had already hit the monster with a divergent fist before, the crystal area was very weak, leaving the monster vulnerable to internal attacks. Mark had hoped, in a way, that by using the sonic impact, Fiona’s body would be preserved fully so that he could at least bury that, but Fiona’s arms and legs had been ripped off and taken along with the monster’s head. Fiona was fused tightly to the monster, so there had been no chance of separating them.
Alec Ben suddenly appeared beside Mark in a burst of speed.
“Mark, the rest of the monsters are retreating. I’ll send a missive to the army for them to take care of—”
Alec stopped talking when he saw what Mark had been looking at all this time, his eyes widening in surprise before he pointed at the body in the monster’s crystal.
“Is that Fiona?”
“No, it isn’t.”

Mark’s voice was final and left no room for argument. He took off his shirt and draped it over Fiona’s body before reaching down and grabbing Fiona’s torso in his arms. He held her close and walked away from the scene while talking.
“Fiona died a hero in the fight against Gunter, and her body was found and buried. Do you understand?”
Mark turned around and gave Alec a look, and Alec knew better than to argue at that moment. He nodded, and Mark turned back to continue walking.
“I’ll join the cleanup efforts after taking care of this. Tell Henry that the Vanguard guild is claiming the body of the Armageddon. I swear to god, Alec, if I hear that even a single finger from this body goes missing, I’m going to take Henry’s head as compensation. Don’t fucking touch it.”
After everything that had been done with anima corpses and the amount of damage that the country had suffered because of how people were misusing the corpses, Mark realized that it was in everyone’s best interest if the government never got their hands on another Armageddon corpse ever again. There was nothing Mark could do about the hundreds of Anima corpses around America, but at least he could prevent the bodies of the more powerful monsters from getting into the hands of those who would misuse them. Mark was going to make sure no one could use this corpse for their bullshit agendas anymore.
Luna arrived at the scene, and once she saw Fiona’s body, she hugged Mark sadly and told him that it would be okay. Mark nodded calmly, and they both walked away from the battleground.
