Chapter 543: Hope Beyond The Carnage
The relief efforts for those who had suffered greatly in the battle began immediately. Over the next few hours, hundreds of superhumans with support abilities came out from the bunkers and began to try their best to save and preserve as much of the country as they could. Buildings were scavenged to make sure that there were no people trapped in them, stray anima were killed, anima corpses were cleared out and piled at the center of cities, and the civilians that were in the bunkers were allowed to move freely outside.
It turned out that Mark’s choice to listen to Pat and Henry about where to take the Armageddon fight was the right decision, as the many investment companies in and around City H immediately got back to work, trying their best to provide as much relief aid as possible while rebuilding the cities to what they once were.
The Alpha Squad sent out by Henry proved to be very useful when the rest of the superhumans were getting tired. Alpha Three to Ten joined Arit and the Moonlight Guild to push back the large horde of anima and give the ELITE Ranks a fighting chance against the Armageddon.
More than one-third of the superhumans who fought against the anima ended up dead, and Alpha One, the leader of the Alphas, needed to go to the hospital for treatment after taking on two Elder Eldritch monsters with very little support.
Somehow, in the middle of all the fighting, Alpha Six, the woman who attacked and killed Sasha, ended up losing an eye. No one really knew what happened, but Alpha Six continued to shout that it was Arit who had somehow led a monster to her and caused her to lose the eye. Arit obviously denied those accusations, claiming Alpha Six was just in the way of the fight and the anima headed towards Alpha Six on its own, and no one could blame her since the battle was so fierce.
After the Armageddon monster was killed, Arit and the other superhumans were given a lot of breathing room as the anima they were battling against turned tail and ran from the battle scene. The superhumans obviously didn’t allow them to escape and gave chase. If the anima were allowed to escape, they would just come back stronger some other time.
Arit flew off from the battlefield after absorbing enough mana from one of the anima around her and made her way toward where she knew Mark was. The sun had already reached its peak in the sky, and Arit slowly realized that they had been fighting for more than a day already. She was dead tired, and if not for the fact that she had to make sure Mark was okay, Arit would have just passed out to recover her stamina.
Arit found Mark and Luna waiting for her on top of a high-rise building in City H. Mark could already sense she was coming, so he just grinned and caught her when she launched herself at him happily. Mark calmed her down and told her to stop crying, and Arit shook her head and kissed him with enough force to drive him back a step! She was just so happy that he was alive! She really thought she lost him when he vanished!
Mark just chuckled and held her close.
He wasn’t going anywhere.
That night, the president went on national television to address the public on the state of the country. Most people were in relief camps, huddled together under large blankets to protect themselves from the biting cold, but they were still smiling and happy that they were at least alive as they watched the president deliver her speech on television.
“…once more, our country has been put through a daunting cataclysm that has left us with more pain and suffering than anyone should have to bear. But unlike most other countries that would have suffered and died out under such a severe onslaught of monsters, we managed to persevere. Our superhumans, the pillars of our nation, made sure that not only did we get through this cataclysm, but we came out of it stronger than we once were. It is my solemn vow to each and every one of you that before the month is over, our country will be back to the thriving utopia it once was. We will not allow the machinations of these monsters to hold us back. We will stand strong and show the world that we are not weak. We are Americans, and we are the leaders of the modern world!”
Loud cheers erupted all around the world as people happily clapped for the speech. The president’s intonation and her ability to induce emotion into her words gave the people a sense that things were really going to be fine, and they all held onto that hope because it was truly all they had.
The president continued.
“And of course, we cannot claim to have gotten this far without the patriotic acts of the men and women who stood in the foreground and protected their country at the risk of their own lives – disregarding their own safety to ensure that we all could see the sunrise today. Most importantly, those who took it upon themselves to battle the strongest monster the country has ever seen. The Armageddon-class monster, only the second of its kind to ever show itself, was taken care of by a team led by the strongest superhuman in the Federation of America, Mark Vanitas, who successfully dealt the killing blow that defeated the Armageddon. And in the midst of the carnage, we saw the rise of a new leader for the modern Federation. A new pillar to stand on in times of trouble—GHOST, the god killer. Wherever you are, I, and everyone in America, give you our thanks.”
More cheers rang out as the president bowed her head to the camera, thanking GHOST for his actions against the anima. The people took to chanting for him once more, this time using the moniker the president had bestowed upon him:
“GOD KILLER! GOD KILLER! GOD KILLER! GOD KILLER!”
This continued for a while, at such volume that it shook America to its foundation. It was as though the entire country had found themselves a new hero to replace the dead KING. Now, rather than looking up to the KING, they were looking to the GHOST.
The president’s camera panned out as the cheers from the public started to die down, and she put her hand out to introduce some people standing beside her. It was Alec Ben, Henry Ford, and the Alpha Team.
“And of course, we must also thank the personnel in our own military who mobilized immediately after the call for help was announced to protect the citizens. Most notable of these are the people you see on your screens right now. Alec Ben was a pivotal part of the efforts to handle the Armageddon, and without the efforts of the men and women of the ALPHA squad, we would not be standing here today.”
Most of the country was captivated as they looked at the squad standing beside Alec and Henry, they all clapped and cheered, as many people remembered the members of the Alpha Squad helping them out during the battles.
