Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 544
Chapter 544: The Alpha Squad
The president gave Henry a nod, and Henry nodded back before the president made an announcement.
“From this day onwards, this team will be part of a new government unit tasked with ensuring a disaster like this never occurs again. They shall oversee and regulate the activities of government agencies and guilds in the country and ensure the safety of the people. Alec Ben shall be the head, and Henry Ford shall be the liaison of the new ALPHA SQUAD!”
Cheers rang out from the people as they all clapped once more!
Right now, the president was expertly feeding off the survivalist mentality of the American people. Those who survived the rampage and the ensuing damage done by the anima felt so grateful to be alive that they were clinging to any form of hope and protection they could take. They didn’t even bother feeling skeptical about the Alpha Squad or what this would mean for them, and those who did feel skeptical were swept up in the jubilations of the others and decided it wasn’t something worth bothering about. They should just be happy to be alive and that they were going to be safe for now.

Luna scowled as she turned off the television and threw the remote away. Luna didn’t know much about Henry, but she didn’t remember ever seeing him on the battlefield when they were all fighting for their lives. The mere fact that the president was trying to paint him as the real hero, along with his ALPHA squad, left a bad taste in her mouth. But Luna didn’t care enough to do anything about it.
Luna knew almost better than anyone else just what sort of person Henry was, and she could already guess that Henry put all of this in motion himself so that he could gain more power in the country through the chaos. Henry had never kept it hidden from the SOVEREIGNS that he didn’t fully trust them. There was always this wall between the SOVEREIGNS and the rest of the government because of how difficult it was for the government to control them.
‘I guess they won’t have to worry about that anymore now. They have their own army of SOVEREIGNS that will listen to and do whatever the government wants.’
Luna leaned back on the large couch with a tired look on her face. After they left the battlefield earlier, Luna offered Arit and Mark safety in her house in City S, the same place Mark had driven Luna to after they watched Salazar’s execution. The mansion was located far away from where the horde of anima had appeared, and the massive destruction they caused didn’t even get close to the compound, so it was the perfect place for them to rest and recuperate.
Mark agreed to her offer. Since both the hotel and their former house in City A had been destroyed, Mark and Arit didn’t have anywhere to go. But first, Mark went over to the Superhuman Alliance building to grab Talia and Jeanne from where they had kept them.
Luna and Arit both followed him as he went over there, and Luna would never forget the scene that played out the moment they entered the city. It was like the civilians on the ground were seeing a god. They formed a large crowd, just watching Mark as he walked down the street towards the building. They didn’t shout, and they didn’t even dare to come up to him, but Luna could tell that each and every person there revered Mark like he was a saint. They looked up to him with the same eyes that Luna had once looked up at the statue of the King so long ago. Like he was their god, and they worshiped him.
Mark made his way into the building, and he didn’t have to ask twice before Talia and Jeanne were brought to him. He hugged Talia and thanked Jeanne for looking after her, and then Luna called a helicopter for them all to leave. Marilyn, the president, wanted Mark to stay back for her speech so that she could show him off to America, but Mark didn’t even bother giving her the time of day. Mark was not in the mood to talk to anyone right at that moment, and they all knew better than to push the man capable of killing an Armageddon.
Through all this, Mark never let go of Fiona’s body. He held the clothed corpse in one hand, making sure no one could see what it was. It wasn’t until Mark saw Tylor standing to one side that he went up to the man and explained to him what happened. Tylor looked like he was going to break down right there, but Mark gave him that same look he always gave people when they were about to do something stupid, and Tylor controlled himself.
Mark handed Fiona’s corpse to Tylor and told him to prepare a burial in secret.
“I’ll come pay my respects once it’s ready. Just make sure it’s nothing big, close friends and family only. She wanted that much.”
That was what Mark said to Tylor before leaving the building with Arit, Luna, and Talia. Jeanne went off to find Pat and make sure that he was okay while Mark and the rest of them made their way to Luna’s mansion in the helicopter that arrived.
That had been earlier in the evening, and now they were all in Luna’s place. Talia had gone to bed earlier since she was tired from everything that happened, and Luna had no idea where Arit or Mark were. Luna also went to get some sleep once they arrived since she was completely drained from all the fighting, and when she woke up, she couldn’t find Arit or Mark anywhere. The mansion was so large that she knew she might not be able to find them even if she walked through all the rooms for an hour. Luna could just use her senses to locate them, but she was currently too tired to try that, and besides, Luna knew that it might be an invasion of their privacy.
‘They’re probably together.’
Luna drew her legs up to the couch and put her chin on her knees as she sighed tiredly. Luna knew that a lot had happened in the time since she spoke to Arit about her offer, but a small part of Luna couldn’t help but wonder what Arit thought about it. Arit never gave her an answer before Sasha attacked them, so it was still up in the air.
‘Is she okay with it? Or maybe she changed her mind after Mark came back. I want to ask her, but I don’t want to hear what she’ll say in case I don’t like it. I might not be able to bear it if she says no.’
Luna was desperate for a sign from Arit, but she hadn’t had any time to talk to Arit since the fighting ended. Luna sighed again and started to change the channels on the television to try and find a cartoon or anime to watch, but a voice from behind her made her pause.
“Luna.”
