Chapter 545: We Need To Lay Some Ground Rules
“Luna.”
Luna turned around sharply to see Arit standing in the doorway. Arit had gone back to her normal human form, and she was holding her arms around her chest while looking down with a frown. Luna pressed the mute button on the anime that started playing and dropped the remote as Arit finally looked up.
“Arit. Yeah, what is it?”
Arit’s frown deepened for a moment as she just stared at Luna. This went on for a long time, and Luna could almost feel the tension in the room rising just from Arit’s stare alone. But then Arit spoke up after more than a minute.
“If we are going to do this, then we need to set some ground rules…”
Luna’s heart sped up to almost unbearable levels, and she swallowed. She quickly nodded, afraid that hesitating would make Arit change her mind, and Arit sighed with a small smile before walking forward to sit on the couch as she gave her conditions.

In another part of the mansion, Mark was standing in the shower, the cold water beating down on him relentlessly and helped him bring his mind back to reality. He stared at his reflection on the black tiles of the bathroom with a faraway look as his mind wandered through various thoughts.
The one thing that came to the front of his mind over and over again was Salazar. Mark had won the bet against Loki by killing the Armageddon, and that meant that Salazar was no longer going to reincarnate after he died. Loki was going to take his soul and put it in limbo afterward, so Mark had free reign over what to do with him now.
Mark was not a twisted person.
No one who would willingly go out to save people at the risk of his own life would have the heart to carry out despicable or twisted acts on other humans. But at this moment, Mark couldn’t help the thought that came to his mind.
Mark wanted to hurt Salazar.
Mark wanted to break him, torture him, tear him apart until there was nothing left. It was a feeling that almost drove Mark mad with the intensity that it arrived with—like darkness encroaching on his mind and covering everything in shadows. If not for the cold water keeping him grounded in reality, Mark would have lost himself in his own dark thoughts.
Mark thought things through rationally and decided that even though he would torture the bastard, he was going to keep Salazar alive for now. There was still the matter of the Syndicate to deal with, and Mark needed information from Salazar. Mark was going to put Salazar through the ringer, and only after Mark was sure that there was no more information for Salazar to give, would Mark finish him off.
But the more pressing matter at this time wasn’t even Salazar—it was the rewards Mark got for finishing off the Armageddon. Mark glanced toward the notification on his system screen once more and read through the rewards with a growing frown on his face.

Does the user wish to open the [Information Scroll]?
…
Mark took in a quiet breath as he read through everything again. This was the third time that he would be reading through it since coming back from the fight against the Armageddon. Mark would have opened the information scroll earlier, but he didn’t want to rush himself since he wasn’t in the best state of mind at that moment. So he tried his best to calm down first so he could look at whatever was inside the scroll with a clear mind. But Mark’s curiosity had finally gotten the better of him, and he told the system to open the scroll.
The tab in front of him cleared out, and in its place, a new one appeared.
…
[Information Scroll: The Secret of The Gods]
A die has been cast, and sides have been drawn. From here on out, the fight is no longer one for survival. It is one to prove humanity’s relevance.
…
Mark frowned and read through it again. And then again. And then a third time.
‘What the fuck is this?’
Mark was stunned by how little information he got from the information scroll. What did it mean by a fight to prove our relevance? What are the gods playing at here?
Mark knew that the die being cast had to be some form of reference to the gods choosing sides. But Mark had no idea what sides the gods were choosing from or why. The gods blessed humanity with their powers. They gave him these powers so that we could fight back against the enemy… so what is all this about choosing sides? Are the gods saying that humans are losing their purpose?
‘Sozin, what the fuck does this mean?’
Mark spoke up in his head to try and communicate with Sozin, but there was no response from his patron god, and Mark frowned. Sozin was the one that gave him this scroll as a reward for completing this mission, so shouldn’t he at least help him out in figuring out what the fuck it meant?
‘No, that would be too much. Sozin already gave me the scroll even though the other gods told him not to. The least I can do is figure out the cryptic message on my own.’
Mark read through the information scroll again.
‘A die has been cast, and sides have been drawn. From here on out, the fight is no longer one for survival. It is one to prove humanity’s relevance.’
It almost seems like they’re telling us everything before now was some sort of test. Like we were being groomed for something, and now that we’ve proven we can survive, we have to start proving our worth. Is that what it means? But if that was the case, then why wasn’t it enough just to survive? Isn’t that enough to prove anyone’s worth?
Mark shook his head as he was suddenly brought back to reality again by the cold shower, and he decided that he would think about this later as well. Having a brainstorming session about the whimsical behavior of the gods was the last thing on his mind right now. Mark just wanted to de-stress after everything that happened.
