Chapter 554: The Sect Of Vanitas
A few minutes later, Mark walked around the house fully clothed, making his way toward where his girls were. Mark knew when they left the room earlier, but he knew they wanted to talk about something, so he just allowed them to leave as he went back to sleep.
“Big brother!!”
A loud voice echoed from down the hallway, and Mark grinned as he saw Talia come out of a room at the side with a maid following after her. The maid had a worried look on her face, trying to tell Talia not to run so much, but Talia didn’t care as she ran toward Mark and jumped on him like a koala! Mark laughed and caught Talia gently. He put a kiss on her head, and Talia giggled happily.
“I’ve been looking for you, big brother! This house is huge! Are we going to stay here now?”
Mark just laughed and told Talia that they were only staying there for a short time. Mark brought Talia up so that she was sitting on his shoulder, and he thanked the maid for taking care of her before he started walking forward. The maid bowed reverently to Mark, and Mark could sense that there was something different about this. Did the maids ever bow this low when greeting Luna?
It was a small detail, and Mark would have just thrown it out as something unimportant if he hadn’t noticed it twice already.
Mark shook his head and continued to walk forward while talking to Talia.
“You know the house actually belongs to Luna. She’s the one that helped you with the video game before.”
Talia’s eyes widened in surprise, and she smiled happily at Mark.
“Big Sister Luna!? Her house is huge!”
Mark nodded. Her house was most definitely huge. He continued talking to Talia about how she was feeling and what she wanted to eat today as he walked through the house. His keen senses already picked up on Arit and Luna’s location, so he didn’t need to stop and ask any of the maids or butlers around the room for it. But as he passed them, Mark noticed that each and every one of them bowed reverently to him, the same way the two maids from before had. Finally, Mark couldn’t just ignore it anymore, and he cornered one of the butlers who seemed like a rational person, and asked him what this was all about.
The butler almost seemed surprised by the question, and his answer was so simple that it stunned Mark.
“Your actions in the war have caused a wave that you do not yet know about. We, the servants of Madam Luna, have decided to follow you as well. It is only normal that we bow to you.”
“What sort of wave?”
The butler looked up at Mark reverently, trying to gather his thoughts, and Mark allowed him to do it while waiting patiently. Finally, after a few seconds, the man spoke up.
“I do not like to refer to it in such a way since I feel it undermines your greatness, but for the lack of a better term: a cult has been formed in your name. We are proud followers of the sect of Vanitas.”
Mark’s brow furrowed in shock, and even Talia on top of his shoulder seemed too stunned to speak. The what? The fucking what?
“The sect of Vanitas? What the hell are you talking about?”
The butler seemed frightened by Mark’s sudden anger, and he took a step back and dropped his head so he wasn’t looking Mark in the eye. Mark felt like facepalming, and he just told the man to elaborate! What fucking cult was he talking about!?
“We, the powerless, have been shunned for a long time. We haven’t had anyone stand up and defend us without seeking out profit, fame, or fortune. In all the years that superhumans have ruled the world, only two men have risen to defend us when all seemed lost. One of them is KING, and the other is you, the God Killer, Mark Vanitas. Our priestess gained insight from a god that you will become even more powerful with more followers joining your banner. Therefore, we have devoted our lives to spreading your name so that you may be known in all corners of the world. That is our life’s mission.”
Mark was stunned, and he quickly glanced to the left and brought up the system tab, trying to see if there was really a change to his stats from the formation of this ‘cult,’ and Mark’s eyes widened in shock!

“What the fuck?”
Mark couldn’t help exclaiming loudly when he saw the system, and he realized his mistake when Talia raised her hands and yelled the word “fuck” playfully. Mark deadpanned and chuckled. Arit would kill him if she knew he taught Talia that word. Talia had become a lot more playful since she started living with Mark, and her proper, adult-like attitude from when she was a member of the NSA was slowly bleeding away. Mark didn’t hate the change at all, but he knew it would make Talia a lot more energetic than before.
Mark glanced at his system again and saw that the bonuses added to his stats had seriously increased his abilities from what they were yesterday. No wonder Mark felt strangely powerful this morning. It was because of the sudden increase in the number of followers he had.
The butler was still waiting on Mark, looking up at him reverently for any more questions, and Mark just sighed and asked the man who this “priestess” was.
“I apologize, Master Vantias. I am not aware of her identity. No one has seen her yet, and she only communicates with the devout followers of the sect via telepathy.”
A superhuman.
Mark narrowed his eyes as he realized this would be a lot more troublesome than he thought. If the woman had been using a phone to communicate, then it would have been easy to ask Pat to just track her down, but using telepathy meant she could be anyone on the street. Mark shook his head and thanked the man before telling him that he could leave. The man seemed hesitant, and Mark asked him what was wrong.
“M-May I… shake your hand?”
Mark raised a brow at the man, and the man quickly started to explain himself.
“I-It’s nothing strange, I swear it. I simply revere you, Master Vantias, and it would be my greatest honor to shake your hand.”
Mark watched his system, and he was surprised when his [Styxwatcher’s Discernment] didn’t activate. This dude really just wanted to shake his hand for the sake of it? That was weird.
Mark gave the man a firm handshake, and from the expression on the man’s face, Mark knew the man was on cloud nine. It was actually a little freaky, and Mark wouldn’t have been surprised if the man fell to his knees at that moment. But thankfully, he didn’t, and Mark left the hallway and went towards where he could feel his girls while thinking about what he just heard.
