Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 556
Chapter 556: What Am I?
Once Mark left the room, Luna crouched low and put her hands over her face. She couldn’t believe it. This was really happening.
Luna didn’t even know when she started to cry, and Arit just walked up to her and crouched beside her before giving her a hug.
“Thank you, Arit… sniff~ Thank you so much. I’ll never hurt either of you, I promise.”
Luna was a crying mess, and Arit just held her tight and allowed her to cry for a while. When Luna finally stopped, Arit smiled before getting up and handing Luna a sieve.
“I know you won’t hurt us, that’s why I trusted you. Now come on, we have to try and save as many of these cupcakes as possible.”
Luna chuckled and cleaned her eyes with the back of her hand before grabbing the sieve to start making the new batter.
But just before she was about to grab it, her phone rang, and she gave Arit an apologetic smile as she went to pick it up. That was probably someone from her guild, and she couldn’t ignore it because of all the issues America was facing right now.
Arit smiled and went to continue the meal while Luna picked up the phone and started to talk to one of her vice-captains about where to focus the guild members for the rescue operations.
…
After breakfast, they had all gone out to help in the rescue efforts that were still ongoing all around the country. Mark didn’t want to go out at first because he knew he would face a lot of attention due to the ‘Vanitas Sect’ that had suddenly popped up. From how all the maids and butlers in the mansion had been acting, Mark knew that the people on the streets would also treat him like some sort of god.
But Mark decided that it wasn’t sensible to allow something like that to stop him from helping others, and he just put on his mask and went out with Arit, Luna, and Talia. Luna went off with some of her guild members to an area close to the ocean so that she could help rescue cargo ships that had been sunk, as well as civilians caught on life rafts in the ocean.
The guild members were all shocked when Mark and Luna openly kissed in the middle of the street, but they said nothing about it since what their guild leader does is none of their business. But the reporters and various civilians around were a different story as murmurs and shocked gasps echoed through the area! Mark knew that it wouldn’t even take an hour for the whole of America to find out about this, so he paid it no mind!
Mark went with Talia and Arit to City A to aid in the rescue efforts in and around the Red Lotus hotel. This area was the one that was most affected by the anima attacks. Mark living here drew a lot of attention, so when Salazar prepared his plans, he made sure that most of the anima that emerged from the ground would first come to this hotel in case Mark managed to somehow survive the plan to drag him to the ALTERWORLD.
This sudden influx of anima meant that almost no one survived the attack. The buildings had been destroyed, roads were cracked, and fires were still surging from the broken gas lines below the city. It was a disaster area that most people couldn’t even imagine.
Arit took to the sky with other superhumans who could fly, and even though they were stunned by her appearance, they remembered her from the battle against the anima, and they all knew that she was not an enemy. The government never released Arit’s crimes to the public since Mark saved many of the buildings that Henry wanted to save, so the citizens only thought Arit was a superhuman with a strange transformation blessing. There were still many that were cautious around her and refused to go anywhere near her because of how similar she looked to an anima, but those that fought beside her in the battle were a lot more welcoming.
Mark and Talia worked together on the ground. Talia would send out her summons and look for anybody trapped under rubble or in their bunkers, and Mark used his [Achilles Heel] to scan the area and find anyone that Talia couldn’t see with her summons, helping them get out while healing those that needed to be saved.
There were many people swarming around Mark during the rescues, and Mak tried his best to remain calm through all this, but he could never get used to the way people were now looking at him. It was strange and a little irritating that they now saw him as some sort of god. Mark wasn’t interested in their reverence at all, and he had to stop more than one person who fell to their knees and almost pressed their head to the ground in front of him.
Stop this shit, you crazy people.
The other superhumans around were a little surprised by the sudden reverence that the non-superhumans had for Mark, but they didn’t question it since they understood. They were all sure that if KING had survived the battle against the Armageddon all those years ago, then he might have been treated in the same way. There was no way the entire country wouldn’t seek Mark out after what he did.
…
[Meanwhile, Somewhere In The Desolate Coast, East of The Russian Peninsula]
The turbid waters, infested with debris, garbage, and disease, smashed against the eastern wall of the coast. The air was thick with a white fog that carried with it the smell of rotten corpses, and the loud cries of crows flying overhead were the only thing prevalent through the area.
A hand reached out from the edge of the coast and grabbed onto the land, pulling a body out from the ocean and onto land slowly.
Its body was humanoid in design, and yet it was very obvious that it was anything but human. Its body was lean and tall, standing at almost three meters (10 feet) in height with muscles rippling beneath its lean physique. There was a hole in the middle of its chest, like it had been cut out perfectly, leaving only a cylindrical intrusion.
It was hunched over, but after glancing around with red, glaring eyes, it slowly stood up straight, towering over the land as it surveyed the region for anything that would interest it. It brought its hand up and glanced at its green, rough skin before bringing up one of its legs and tilting its head to the side as it moved its webbed toes around. There was a curiosity in its gaze that hinted at an undeniable intelligence, and it finally dropped its limbs and glanced around again, looking for something to move toward.
After finding nothing, it slowly began to trek due west. It did not know why it went this way, and it did not know where it was going. All it knew was that it was born from the ocean, so it was only right that it moved away from there and toward something new. As it moved, only one thought crossed its mind repeatedly:
‘What am I?’
