Chapter 572: Abandon The Useless
“We are going to focus our forces on taking back the areas surrounding the mining town and allow the Angels to have the trading town.”
The Lamia interjected in shock.
“But, my Lord—”
“It is just land.”
Mark spoke up before she could say anything more and gave her a look that said this decision was not up for debate, and the Lamia seemed to deflate as she looked away from him.
Mark knew that the land was important to the demons for some reason, but as far as he was concerned, it was just land for now. What is the point of protecting land that will serve no purpose to them when they can instead protect land that will help further the war efforts?
The goblin general nodded in acceptance of this plan as he began to see Mark in a better light. The truth was that many of the council members did not see the importance of that land as much as the Lamia did. The Lamia were the major traders in the land, so it was understandable that they would see the land as something important to their history. However, as far as the other species were concerned, it was not that big of a deal to lose that land so long as they managed to gain the upper hand against the Angels in the long run.
“For the plan to work out, we are going to use the trading land as bait and draw the Angel army there. Our forces at the trading town are weaker than the Angels right now, so fighting them head-on would be suicide. Rather than doing that, we are going to carry out a pincer maneuver using this land over there. There is an elevation that can serve as a barricade for our forces, and after communicating with the demons in the outpost protecting the mining town, we will move together to the Angel barricade. But for that to work, we must make sure they cannot get reinforcements from the other Angel barricades surrounding this part of the continent. We will need to come up with a new method of communication.”
The council members all glanced at Mark in surprise, and Mark grinned and continued to lay out his idea.
…
Mark’s idea was simple. The Angels were spread over a large area of land to properly lay siege to the many demon outposts protecting the demon towns. This gave the demons a small fighting chance, and it was the only reason why the Angels hadn’t subdued all of the outposts. The Angels knew that moving any of their barricades would allow the demons in those outposts to attack the other Angels, so there was an unspoken stalemate between the two forces on that front.
Mark was going to use that to his advantage.
First, Mark sent out a missive to the demon army located at the outpost close to the trading town. The leader of that outpost was a Werewolf named Greth, who had been in the middle of a meal when the message from the new Demon King arrived. The werewolf had no idea there was even a new Demon King, so he was skeptical at first but eventually realized it was real when he saw the message was signed by both Hunn, the leader of the goblins, and Riger, the general of the ground forces and current leader of the werewolves. There was no doubt that the message was real.
In the message, Mark laid out instructions to Greth on how he was to start a small skirmish between their outpost and the Angel barricade located close by. This would ensure that the barricade focused all of its attention on them and did not bother paying attention to what was happening with their closest neighbor, a few kilometers away at the mining town.
After this, Greth was to employ some hit-and-run tactics. There was no need for Greth to focus on trying to protect the town anymore, so he was only going to try and ensure the survival of his troops while drawing the Angels further and further away from their barricade. This way, the Angels would think the demons were putting up a last stand and would rush the trading town, thereby drawing their attention away from the mining town even more.
Greth growled somewhere deep in his throat as he read all of this, and he knew that this plan was basically the same as sentencing all of the people living in that town to death. If Greth tried to carry out the demon lord’s instructions while protecting his own troops, then they would basically be giving the Angels free rein to take the trading town and kill all of the demons living there.
But there was nothing Greth could do about it since this was a plan signed off by all of the council members. Sending a message back and telling them that the plan would lead to many deaths would take too long, since the demon lord told Greth to begin the attacks immediately. Greth wrote back with a carrier hawk, accepting the instructions, and he rallied his troops for an attack.
…
That evening, Mark, Riger, and Hunn—who was the goblin general that had spoken up in favor of Mark’s plans—were still standing around a small table in the council room, looking over a plan and trying to properly organize everything that was to be done for the coming battle.
Mark had a furrow in his brow as he listened to the generals lay out the land properly and give him advice on where he was to send some troops and which area would be too dangerous to attack without support. Mark had sent out the other council members to prepare things for the battle, and Arit had gone to have a look around the castle when she realized that Mark needed to concentrate. Mark told Arit that he didn’t mind her staying there with him, but Arit just told him that she was actually curious about what a fantasy world looked like, and she promised that she would be careful before leaving with the Lamia.
“… if we put our troops here, the Angels will be forced to form a barricade around the eastern region. This will give us a better chance of attacking from behind the mountains without being seen. We are going to have to get rid of all the aerial forces first, so we will send in the Air Force, but after that, me and the rest of the cavalry can come in…”
Riger was in the middle of laying out his ideas of what they should do, and Mark listened attentively while putting his input here and there to try and form a better image of what the battle would look like in his head.
This was hard.
Mark had never thought about trying to lead such a large organization for real before. In Mark’s head, he had always assumed that the largest group he would be in charge of was his guild, which wouldn’t have more than twenty people at the most, so Mark never realized just how fucking difficult it was to plan out a battle.
It was fucking hard.
