Chapter 574: The Concept of Instigation
“You’re the greatest human to have ever lived, Mark. The king of all our people – my king. I know that no matter what happens tomorrow, no matter what the enemies bring against us, you’ll do your best to make sure things work out for the good of your troops. So stop worrying about the what-ifs. We will show them what it feels like to go up against the Vanitas family tomorrow.”
A small smile spread across Mark’s face when Arit said the Vanitas family, and he reached up and brought her down for a kiss. Arit accepted the kiss without any restraint, and when they separated, she gently brought Mark closer for a hug while pressing his face into her bosom. Mark wrapped his arms around Arit’s thin waist.
Arit had changed out of her ceremonial gown into a silk dress for sleeping, which allowed Mark to really enjoy the smooth feel of her skin under his palm.
“Thank you, Arit… for everything.”
Arit smiled happily. She couldn’t remember a time when Mark was vulnerable. Even when they were in the middle of a life-and-death battle, or when people died under his watch, Mark had always been a tall mountain standing against the most immense pressure without buckling. But now, after Mark told her of his worries, Arit realized that Mark wasn’t just a mountain standing against the pressure. Mark seemed almost human once more.
Arit felt blessed that she was the one Mark allowed to see this side of him. She was the one that Mark opened up to like this, and the mere thought of that made Arit hug Mark tighter as a giddy feeling surged in her heart. Arit knew that Mark truly loved her.
“You’re always welcome, my King. Even if the world itself conspires against you, or if the gods brand you their enemy. I will be there for you, always.”
Arit’s wings came forward and wrapped them both up in a purple cocoon as she held Mark more intimately than ever before, and they stayed like that for a long time before they went to sleep.
…
The next morning, the sun rose over the world of Rosario as it always had, coming out from the north and moving gently toward the south. On the eastern front, where the demon outpost was protecting the trading town from the angels, a member of the angel army standing watch along the walls of the barricade narrowed his eyes in surprise as he saw something strange on the horizon.
The angels were human-like creatures with large white wings folded behind them. Almost all of them had characteristic blonde hair and blue eyes, and the only way to tell one from another was by their facial features and body shape. The angel army wore black military garb with a white belt around their waists, black boots, and gloves, with a black round hat topping off the outfit.
The barricade had been formed as a long wall stretching from one end of the area to the other, forming a barrier preventing free movement down the road it was built on. There was a barracks built just behind the barricade that could house close to five hundred people, where the angels had their rest, meals, and strategy meetings.
The Angel on the lookout had been smoking a cigarette when he noticed something strange on the horizon. He brought the cigarette out and snuffed it on the wooden wall of the outpost while narrowing his eyes into the distance.
It only took the Angel a few minutes to figure out what was happening, and once he did, his eyes widened in shock as he reached up and grabbed the bell hanging overhead.
Gong! Gong! Gong! Gong! Gong!
“Arrows incoming!”
The Angel shouted out to his comrades on the ground, warning them of the arrows that had been shot towards them, and all of the soldiers were immediately on the move as they hustled toward the inner part of the barricade!
The arrows flying towards the angel barricade were alight with flames at their tips, and there was a gale wind following behind them, letting the Angels know that they had been powered up by wind magic to be more destructive!
Thunk! Thunk! Thunk! Thunk!
The arrows slammed into the walls of the barricade, digging deep into the wooden barrier and setting it on fire! And just when the angels thought the barrage was over, the arrows exploded!
BOOM!
A fiery crescendo of yellow flames burst through the wall of the barricade, rending a section of it to ashes and leaving the rest of it either in flames or crumbling from the intense blow.
A certain angel ran out from within the barracks behind the barricade and frowned in anger once she saw what had been done to the barricade wall! Flames were licking at a large hole in the wall, and the wooden structure had been compromised by the attack. The angel that came out was the commander of the barricade. Her name was Grace, and she was a beautiful woman with bright blue eyes and blonde hair. She wore the same uniform as the other members of the army, but at her waist, she carried a sword in a white sheath lined with gold carvings.
“Another one is incoming!”
An angel shouted this out in fear as a new barrage of arrows flew in from the front, and Grace shouted out to some of the angels who were just standing around, commanding them to go out and form a protective barrier around them, and the angels all obeyed and moved quickly!
They formed a long line in front of the barricade and raised their hands in the air before pouring out mana. In the next moment, a golden light shimmered to life in front of them, stretching far and wide as all the mages joined their magic together to form the shield. The golden light created a section of a hemisphere, covering everything from the ground up to where they knew the arrows would hit.
The arrows slammed into the shield with dull thuds, and the shield did not even budge as the arrows all fell to the ground uselessly. And then, they exploded!
BOOM!
The massive explosion raised a large plume of dust and stone into the air, giving off the impression of the damage it could cause should it hit. But when the dust cleared up, the shield was still perfectly intact without any damage at all. The angels finally brought the shield down when they did not see any more arrows in the sky, and the female commander came out with a scowl on her face and glared into the distance in anger! There was a fury boiling somewhere deep in her stomach, and every nerve in her body commanded her to retaliate! Those bastard demons think they can start a battle without repercussions! Did they think their paltry attack would harm even a single one of us!? It seems we’ve been at peace for far too long already!
The female started to move back inside to send a message to the higher-ups while shouting out to the army!
