Chapter 576: Retreats and Reinforcements
“Dark Fire!”
The darkness spells released by the demon mages were an S-rank spell that required very little mana to be activated once mastered! It was a simple spell, but its effectiveness was obvious as it flashed toward the sky with unparalleled speed and slammed against the arrows flying down to the demons, destroying nearly all of them and leaving behind fewer than twenty of the original hundreds!
The two armies continued their charge toward each other, and it didn’t take long before they both met in the middle of the large field in a clash of white against black!
“RARRGHH!!”
“DIE, YOU ANGEL SCUM!”
“KILL THEM! KILL THEM ALL!”
The demons were screaming like animals as they lashed out against the Angels savagely, but in the midst of all the madness, it could obviously be seen that the Angels had the upper hand! The Angels were winged creatures who could use their higher vantage points as attacks against the demons, cutting them down from above where they couldn’t reach! But the demons had already planned for this as well, and the darkness mages from before continued their barrage of Dark Fire, rending the sky with black flames that forced many of the Angels down to the ground to make the fighting fairer!
The demons’ cavalry moved forward first, using their long polearms and wind magic to disorient the Angels and force them to slow their approach before the stronger forces charged forward and lashed out with even more fervor than the cavalry!
The Angels, on the other hand, were more focused on using their light magic to cause as much damage to the demons as possible! Due to the sudden nature of the battle, the Angels did not have time to come up with an attack plan that would be a direct threat to the demons’ formation! The only formation they had to rely on now was the one they had used in their last battle against the demons, and from the way the demons were easily anticipating those attacks, it was obvious that they had prepared specifically for this type of formation!
But that did not mean the Angels were being pushed back at all! In fact, it was the exact opposite!
Although the demons had the superior formation at this moment and they also had the upper hand when it came to preparation time, the sheer intensity of the Angels’ attack, as well as the damage that every single light spell was causing to their ranks, forced the demons back slowly, making all of their advantage over the Angels disappear as though it never existed in the first place!
The commander of the demon army, Tusk, could tell that his army was getting pushed back, and he knew that this was the time to begin the real plan! The Demon Lord specifically told Tusk that it was only when the angels were properly invested in the battle against the demons and when it looked like they were about to win that he should make the next smoke signal. Tusk immediately waved his hand and shouted to one of the mages behind him!
“Release the Beast!”
That was a code Tusk came up with a while ago to allow them to begin the next phase of the attack without alerting the demons to it at all. The mage he spoke to immediately understood what his commander was saying as he took to the sky and flew back toward the outpost! He shouted out the same order to the demons still at the outpost, and before long, a long line of green smoke started to float into the air and spread across the clouds!
It was time for the second wave!
The ground began to shake. It began slowly, like a minor rumbling that was almost unnoticeable underfoot, but as time went on, it became more and more noticeable, rising in a crescendo that shook the very earth to its foundation, drawing attention away from whatever was being done and toward the horizon that had suddenly become painted in black!
Rumble~! Rumble~! Rumble~!
The rumbling intensified to what was practically an earthquake, and in a shocking moment of realization, the angels could immediately tell that this was not something normal! The black outline on the distant hill had grown, and Raphael, the leader of the angels, now knew that the outline wasn’t just a trick of the eye!
There were reinforcements coming!
Raphael was not stupid, and in that moment, he was able to immediately deduce exactly what was happening! The demons had played them, and the angels were going to be locked in by a pincer move if they remained in this place!
The fighting was still going strong between the angels and the demons, and now, rather than retreating, the demons were starting the advance, slowly trying to keep the angels in place to give the forces coming from the other side time to arrive!
Raphael took in everything that was happening in seconds! He looked up at the barrage of Dark Fire that was preventing his angels from flying through the air properly, and then at the large number of demons charging straight for them without caring about their lives at all. Raphael knew that it would be shameful to accept, but at that moment, he knew that if they stayed here, they would definitely lose this fight. So Raphael shouted out to all of his soldiers!
“Retreat! Back to the barricade! Retreat!”
The angels that heard Raphael’s voice took to the sky immediately as they all charged back toward the barricade! They could all feel the tremors going through the ground, and they knew that it would be dangerous to stay here and get pincered in by two different armies! Raphael turned to one of the soldiers at his side, a young angel who was one of their fastest flyers, and told him to go and call for reinforcements!
“Go to the barricade close to the trading town and tell them we are under attack from the demon forces! Bring more help now!”
The seriousness of the situation was not lost on the young angel, and he nodded his agreement as he broke off from the retreating masses and started to fly to the side quickly. But before he could get far, something invisible latched onto him in a vice grip, grabbing him out of the air and slamming him back onto the ground!
BOOM!
Raphael looked down in shock as the angel was battered into the ground and didn’t get up! What the hell just happened!? What was that!?
Raphael looked toward the horizon where he could see a large mass of dark creatures moving toward them. The demons were only about a kilometer away now, and it would not be long before they got to them. But it was what was flying through the air that really caught Raphael’s attention.
There were more than a hundred griffons flying in the air, and standing on the back of the griffon leading the pack and holding onto the reins with a calm disposition that bordered on murderous nonchalance, was a pale-skinned undead.
