Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 596
Chapter 596: A Different Beast
Arit was supposed to be with the Air Force squad, but she wasn’t going to be able to do much because of the coming storm, so for now, she was going to be waiting on the ship to see how the battle played out. If the storm calmed down, then Arit and the rest of the Air Force squad led by Mildred would be able to head out into battle to aid against the angels. But if it didn’t, then Arit would focus more on making sure the ship wasn’t taken over or destroyed by the angels.
Mark boarded the ship and looked out toward all of the demons already boarding their own ships. Once everyone was aboard, Mark put his hand forward and ordered them to drop the sails. The ships all dropped their sails, which were immediately caught in the harsh winds and the ships jerked forward toward battle.
The next few minutes were very interesting to Mark.
This was the first time Mark had been on a ship. He had a yacht that he and Arit used sometimes, and before his parents’ death, Mark had been on various cruises with them for vacation. So Mark would never say he was a stranger to the sea. But it was at this moment that Mark truly understood what people meant when they said the sea was a different beast during storms.
It was as if Mark was experiencing sea journeys all over again. Mark had already trained with the soldiers on how to withstand intense waves and sharp rises and dips, but the training could never prepare you for the intensity of the real thing.
Creak!
The nose of the ship Mark was on suddenly hit a wave, cresting over a deep rise that took almost half of the ship out of the water before it slammed back down onto the water, sending a heavy torrent of water flying everywhere!
Boom!
Woosh!
A heavy wind roared across the area, and the rain increased in intensity as the ocean moaned from a far distance away. Mark was standing at the front of the ship, holding onto the railing at the helm while looking out into the darkness of the ocean. As Mark heard the ocean moan, he could only hope that it was something created by the ocean itself and not some eldritch monster that existed within the waters. The demons told Mark that they were familiar with this ocean and that they had never seen any form of aquatic beast larger than their ships in it. But Mark knew that beasts could come from anywhere and at any time.
There were beasts that only showed themselves when they wanted to, and with how many ships were on the water right now, Mark wouldn’t be surprised if a beast that was hungry crested above water just for them.
They sailed for close to thirty minutes on the torrid ocean before one of the soldiers in the boat came up to Mark and told him that they were already close to the island.
“We should be seeing it any moment now, my Lord.”
Mark only gave the soldier a short glance before he looked out into the horizon, narrowing his eyes as he saw something spark in the sky. At first, Mark thought the spark was created by lightning, but after seeing another golden spark light up the sky in the distance, Mark realized that it wasn’t lightning at all.
“Tell the soldiers to prepare for battle!”
Mark shouted over the intense winds blowing past the ships, and the soldier behind him gasped in shock as he finally saw what Mark had been looking at. The sparks in the sky were caused by signs of battle on the island a few kilometers away! This meant the southern forces had already gotten to the island and were engaging the angel forces in battle right now! The northern forces wouldn’t have any time to prepare at all once they got to the island; they’d have to start fighting immediately!
The soldier quickly nodded and rushed off to pass on the warning, and Mark turned to the side as he saw some of the soldiers in the other warships hitting their swords on their shields and yelling out in agitation as they neared the island. The soldiers had all seen the signs of battle, and they also knew they wouldn’t have any time to prepare once they were on the island, so they were hyping themselves up and getting things ready for the fight!
Mark took in a deep breath and relaxed it gently as he felt himself calming down. If it was this close, then it was time for him to start his own part of the plan.
Mark moved away from the railing and passed many of the council members who had been standing just behind him. Arit was also there, and she only gave Mark a nod before he made his way to the side of the boat where a soldier was holding onto a rope that was tied to a small boat hanging off a pulley at the side of the ship.
Mark tightened his gauntlets, gave the soldier, and told him to lower the boat as he waved Hunn over. The goblin general came towards Mark with a confident stride, and Mark searched for something in Hunn’s eyes for a quick moment before he spoke to him.
“Out of all the members of the army, I trust you the most. You’ve shown that you aren’t the sort of person who would betray your own people to the enemy, so I am leaving you with this truth. There is a traitor in the demon army who has been selling us out to the Angels. After today, I’ll know who the traitor is and kill them, but until then, I need you to look after the army like they are your own. Guide them and make sure you hold the island until I am finished with my plan.”
Hunn’s eyes had already started widening the moment Mark said that Hunn was the demon Mark trusted most in the entire army, and by the time Mark said there was a traitor, Hunn’s face had darkened into a sneer that threatened to burst a nerve! Hunn was not handsome by human standards, but the look on his face now only made him more grotesque and terrifying than ever before! A traitor in the army was a serious accusation, and Hunn knew that Mark wouldn’t just say it unless he was sure!
But from the way Mark was talking, it almost sounded like Mark wouldn’t be with them on the island! Wasn’t Mark going to circle around and come from a different direction!? Why was he talking like they would have to finish the battle on their own!?
Hunn wanted to ask all these questions and so many more, but from the look in Mark’s eyes, Hunn knew that this was not the time. Mark was telling him all this because he trusted him enough to lead the army in his stead, and Hunn decided he was not going to betray Mark’s trust. Hunn nodded seriously, and Mark gave Hunn a pat on the shoulder before he boarded the small ship.
