Chapter 611: Different Locations
Mark reached the meeting room a few minutes later, and the guard standing in front of the room opened the door to reveal all the members of the council present. Hunn, Riger, Matilda, Kaylen, and the other council members representing the various demon races were all seated around a large oval table at the center of the room. Once they saw Mark enter, they all stood as one and bowed to him reverently.
Mark moved toward the large chair at the head of the table, meant for the king, and it wasn’t until he sat down that the rest of the council members also sat. There was a large map in the center of the table, showing the demon and Angel continents as well as how much territory had been captured. Mark felt a little bit of pride when he saw that Aragon Island and Myriad Castle were colored in red, showing they now belonged to the demons.
“Is your Queen not joining us for the meeting, my lord?”
Hunn asked this question with a curious look in his eyes, and Mark glanced at him for a moment before saying that she was not.
Hunn nodded calmly as he accepted Mark’s answer easily. Hunn had become a lot more respectful of Arit after seeing how well she fought in the battle of Aragon. Hunn was part of the goblin race, and they respected strength above everything else. Now that Hunn knew Arit could handle herself even without Mark being there to protect her, he was more willing to accept her position as Queen.
At the side, Mildred raised a brow when she heard that Arit was not going to be joining them, and a small, unseen frown appeared on her face when she saw the look of respect on Hunn’s face as she continued listening to what was being said. It was obvious that the other members of the council were starting to accept Arit as the Queen and Mildred knew that if she didn’t do something soon, she would be the only one against that woman. Mildred realized that she had to speed up her plans before things got out of her control.
Mark asked Hunn and Riger to give an account of the battle of Aragon as well as how many of their troops were lost. They both began to lay out the numbers for Mark without missing a beat. Although the battle on Aragon was cut short by Mark’s actions in taking over the Myriad Castle, there was still a significant number of casualties in the army. The demons from the northern continent came to the battle with about three hundred soldiers and joined forces with close to five hundred soldiers from the southern continent. But after the battle ended, the demons from the northern continent had been reduced to just over two hundred, while those in the southern continent were below three hundred.
The Angels also suffered a lot of casualties from the demons, but Mark saw the losses on the side of the demons as too significant and knew that they had to bolster their forces before starting any new battles. He thought about this for some time, trying to think of ways to increase their forces, but he couldn’t come up with any immediate solutions since he didn’t know much about the recruitment plans the demon army had before he arrived. Mark decided he was going to leave the issue of recruitment to Riger and Hunn and spoke up.
“Although we suffered a lot of casualties in the war, I still commend each and every one of you for how well you fought in the battle. There were reports reaching me recently about how the council members all took up important roles in my absence and made sure to fill in for me, even when they had no idea why I wasn’t on the battlefield. I was skeptical about how much I could trust you all to handle the army in my absence, but what you’ve done recently has shown me that you are more than capable of doing that.”
Mark stood from his seat and calmly walked around the room as he saw the look of pride showing on the faces of some of the council members as he spoke. Mark was not lying about being impressed by their actions in the war. From what he heard through Arit, there had been many strong Angels in the army that tried to reduce their forces at the start, but the council members took charge and ordered their various units expertly to make sure they gave them a fighting chance. It was very impressive.
Mark finally stopped behind the seat where Kaylen, the lamia, was seated, and he put his hand on her shoulder.
“And the most impressive thing that I heard about was how the Angels were so confused at the start of the battle. Can you believe they actually sent out a contingent of Angels to apprehend someone in the northwestern region of the island? From what I hear, the contingent included some of the strongest members of the Angels’ army, and they were all left waiting in the northwestern region until they were ambushed from behind. But it’s weird, isn’t it? What could have possibly made them leave their posts to go and run a fool’s errand in the northwestern region, Kaylen?”
Kaylen, the lamia who had first spoken to Mark when he arrived in this world, jolted under Mark’s hand once she heard her name being called, and she laughed while shaking her head. She had no idea what could have made them do that. How stupid of them to leave their posts like that!
Kaylen had a nervous look on her face as she laughed, but as she looked around the table, she slowly realized in shock that no one else was laughing. They were all looking up at Mark with a similar look of confusion on their faces. Riger was the first to speak up.
“My lord, what do you mean they were waiting at the northwestern region? From what you told me, didn’t you say you would arrive from the northern region? Shouldn’t the Angels have mounted a defense there instead? Or maybe… did someone give the wrong information on purpose?”
Mark smiled and shook his head as his hand tightened against Kaylen’s shoulder, but before he could say anything, Hunn spoke up as well.
“The northern region? I heard the demon lord would arrive from the eastern regions.”
“Wasn’t it the west?”
“I heard it was from the southwest!”
“The message I received detailed an ambush from the southeast.”
All the members of the council suddenly started to speak up in confusion as they tried to understand what was going on. They had all received messages telling them where Mark was going to be arriving on the island from, but each message had specified a different location. Since Mark had told them all to keep the message a secret from the other demons until the battle was over, no one knew that the others had been told something different.
Kaylen kept silent through all this as she felt a bead of sweat going down the back of her neck. Mark’s hand on her shoulder tightened even more, and she hid a wince as she felt her shoulder creak from the pressure! When Mark spoke up next, it was with a jovial tone that almost sounded as if he were just playing around.
“Yeah, you all got a different location in your message.”
