Chapter 614: Raze It To The Ground
Mark narrowed his eyes as he sensed Grunn’s emotions through his senses. There was deep remorse and sadness present in Grunn’s emotions, telling Mark that Grunn was really not happy about how things were playing out. Grunn really didn’t think that Kaylen would be a traitor.
Mark’s chains had already been hovering behind Grunn, and they were waiting for Mark’s orders to lash out at Grunn once Grunn said the wrong thing, but after hearing what he had to say, Mark realized that it wouldn’t be necessary and recalled the chain, leaning back in his seat.
“Regardless of if you knew or not, I still cannot trust you. You were the closest to Kaylen on the council and you were not able to sense her deceit for so long. I have no use for someone who cannot even pick out a traitor from such a close distance. You have been removed from the council with immediate effect and you’ll remain in the dungeons until I decide what to do with you. Take him away.”
Grunn grit his teeth desperately as Mark’s stare pressed into him before Grunn finally sighed internally and allowed the demon guards to come and take him away. Once he was gone, Mark turned back to the rest of the council.
Mark was not going to explain himself too much to them since they had more important things to do, so he just gave them a few words before they moved back to business.
“If I find out that any of the council members here are working with Kaylen, I’m not only going to kill that member but all their family members as well as their close friends. I find it hard to believe that none of you sitting here was able to figure out Kaylen’s true nature before now, and I am only going to give you the benefit of doubt once. I have no use for people who can harbor a traitor in their midst, so if you know what’s good for you, you better find out whether or not the demon sitting beside you is a traitor and report it to me before I find out myself.”
Mark let his eyes roam over the council members there, giving each and every one of them a deep stare as he let them know that he was not playing around. Some of the council members were able to meet Mark’s eyes and gave a nod of agreement, but some of the others who had been close with Kaylen in any way were not able to meet Mark’s eyes for long due to the fear that Mark would end their lives for even being close to someone that was a traitor!
The only reason Mark was keeping Kaylen alive was because he wanted to make a show of it to the demons, but Mark didn’t need anyone other than her, so he wouldn’t bother sparing anyone that he suspected of being a traitor as well.
Finally, after Mark was done with that, he told them that they had to get back to business, and they all agreed as they started talking about the next attack on the Angels’ strongholds.
Now that they were on the Angel continent, Mark knew that it would be easier for them to launch a series of attacks on various Angel strongholds where the Angels least expected it. But Mark also knew that it would be just as easy for the Angels to launch an all-out assault on them and push them away from the Myriad Castle and back to the Aragon Island. That was another reason why Mark did not kill Kaylen. As the traitor, Mark knew she had a direct route to the rest of the Angels, and since they didn’t know that Mark knew about her, they would think that whatever she sent to them was authentic.
Mark was going to use this to his advantage and confuse the Angels during their battles.
“We don’t have any more time to waste, so keep your opinions about Kaylen to yourselves. Hunn, give me a proper rundown of the Angel continent and the various strongholds in it.”
Hunn stood up, and he pointed at the map as he began to talk.
The Angel continent was a lot smaller than the Demon continent, but that didn’t mean it was any less protected. In fact, due to its size, the Angels’ continent had a lot less space to protect, so their forces didn’t need to set up a lot of outposts like the Demons did. Instead, the Angels had set up strongholds in various parts of the continent where they launched attacks from.
These strongholds—just like the Myriad Castle—were built to be sturdy and hold many Angels. They were just like miniature towns where the Angels could both live and prepare for an attack.
The strongholds all over the Angels’ continent were heavily protected, and there were at least five hundred soldiers protecting each of them. The Myriad Castle had been one of these strongholds, but it had so few soldiers protecting it mainly because they had taken the Aragon Island previously.
After taking the island, some of the soldiers from the castle went over to the island and began living there instead, so the armed forces of the Myriad Castle had dropped severely.
The castle here, as well as another castle on the other end of the eastern region of the Angel continent, belonged to one Angel called Duke Grant. Duke Grant was the most powerful Angel in this region of the continent, and he held power over more than a thousand armed Angels in his army.
“…After our recent capture of the Myriad Castle, it is not going to be long before the Duke comes here to try and take back the castle. I suggest we hit them hard and fast before they can even mount a proper attack. There are more Angel strongholds belonging to Duke Grant to our west, where the Angel forces are not as powerful. If we can take over these strongholds, we might stand a better chance of holding back the Duke before he can bring his full might down on us.”
Mark frowned as Hunn’s analysis continued. Take over? Could they really do that? After hearing the numbers, Mark had no illusions about being able to hold down another fortress like the Myriad Castle with the number of people they had. They were too few, and their men would have to be spread too thin if they tried to take over every single fortress.
It would be better for them to just raze that shit to the ground.
Mark cut Hunn off as he spoke up, and everyone at the table turned to Mark and listened to what he had to say.
“Let’s destroy them instead. The fortresses are too large, and our men aren’t going to be able to hold down any of them with the numbers we have. So instead of trying to subjugate them, we’re going to start a rally towards the west, moving steadily down and destroying the strongholds without taking any of them. That way, we can keep our forces while not being overwhelmed by the Angels. The Demons on the southern continent are going to be recalled, and those on the northern continent will be led by Hunn to begin another raid from the northern part of this region. We’ll hit them hard and fast, and before they can figure out what is going on, we will already be finished. Is that clear?”
