Chapter 617: Seige On The Myriad Castle
The demon general’s task during these attacks was not to win the battle against the stronghold. Their task was to make sure that the stronghold did not have the ability to launch a counterattack against them. So, they were focusing more on launching spells from a distance and avoiding direct confrontation unless absolutely necessary.
When Duke Grant’s son, James, as well as the other angels, arrived to provide support, they realized that the demons were already gone, and they were stunned when a new fire rose on the horizon, showing that another stronghold had been attacked by the demons. James frowned in irritation and told some of the angels to help out those who had been injured, while the others should come with him as they moved to the next stronghold. James knew that there was something wrong here. If the demons had only just burned this stronghold down, how were they able to get to the next one so quickly?
There was no way for them to get there so fast, even if they were flying, so that could only mean that they had separated into many groups and were currently attacking various strongholds all at the same time. These fucking demons and their underhanded tricks never failed to get under James’ skin!
James knew that there was no way the demons would be able to outrun him since he was flying and they were walking, so it was only a matter of time before he caught them. But if he tried to fall into the trap of following the smoke and playing their game, then he would be chasing shadows all night.
So, instead, James told his army to change direction, and they began to move north of that area towards another stronghold that had not been burned yet. If the current trend continued, then this stronghold should be the next one in trouble, and they might be able to save it from being burned if they got there fast enough.
But by the time James was barely a kilometer away from it, he cursed as he saw fire rising into the sky as the entire castle was set ablaze! James immediately ordered the angels to light their spells and use them to find all the demons around! They shouldn’t allow a single one of them to escape into the night! The angels all dispersed to do as they were told, and James frowned. He floated in the air and watched the fire burning the stronghold to the ground as his hatred for the demons steadily grew.
These attacks on the angel strongholds continued for the next two days. The absence of any intel on the demons from their informants prevented the angels from being able to put up a proper defense in such a short time, and Mark’s presence served as the catalyst, allowing the demons to advance forward without being afraid that they would be defeated by the angels. Mark’s skills gave the demons such a boost in their abilities and morale that angels of the same magic tier were no longer any match for their demon counterparts.
The demons were not happy about the fact that Mark prevented them from taking any of the women at the strongholds they captured, and they were even more annoyed when Mark told them to prioritize killing the head of the stronghold and burning the place to the ground rather than trying to eradicate everyone.
Mark could sense that the relationship between him and the troops was no longer as tight as it was when he first came to this world. They followed him because he brought them victory, but that camaraderie and undeniable reverence that Mark once felt through his link to them was no longer there. He was their commander, but they did not see him as one of them anymore.
Finally, after two days, the army angels under Duke Grant had mobilized, and they all marched as one toward the Myriad Castle for war.
…
It was difficult being a general in the Angel Army.
James could only think in this manner as he led his own squadron of soldiers forward to the Myriad Castle. There were more than three hundred soldiers under his command, and they had all formed a tight formation that gave them enough room to take off into battle at a moment’s notice. James’ squadron was only one of five squadrons that had come out to battle. All together, there were more than fifteen hundred soldiers gathered for this fight, and James knew that they would outnumber the demons by at least three to one.
But there was a problem.
The soldiers were not motivated.
James had noticed this first when going around to save the strongholds two days ago. This was the angel continent, and the number of times they had fought against the demons could be counted on one hand. The demons had been losing for so long now that many of the soldiers here had never been in anything but small skirmishes that were just for driving away a small band of demons that found their way to the angel territory. A full-blown war like this against the might of the demons’ army had never been done before.
So, rather than taking things seriously and being ready for the fight of their lives, the soldiers were so laid-back and nonchalant that it grated on James’ nerves.
In the minds of every soldier, the angel army had already won. Not only did the angels have the advantage of numbers, but they also had a superior fighting force and the ability to fly and use light spells that the demons were weak to. It was a given that they would win, as far as the soldiers were concerned!
But James did not think in the same way. Did they think the demon lord didn’t know they had a superior fighting force? Did they think the demon lord didn’t know they were going to use dangerous light spells? Did they think the demon lord was an idiot?
No, no idiot would be capable of not only taking back the outpost and the Argon Island but also the Myriad Castle in the angel continent itself. James knew that the demon lord had already sent out sentries to scout the size of the army approaching, and he was going to be making plans at this moment to counter everything they had prepared. Although James hated demons, after two days of being led around by the nose by the demon lord, James had developed a form of respect for that demon lord. Not only had the demon lord not killed that many angels, but he also prioritized destroying the strongholds to make sure that they couldn’t join in on the attack while killing the commanders to give the angels less of a chance in the coming battle.
It was a good strategy, and even James could not deny it. And the craziest part was the fact that it had come from a demon. Have demons ever been known to spare other soldiers in war? Have they ever not kidnapped and raped the women while eradicating the men and burning their corpses? Why was this demon lord so different from the others?
