Chapter 618: An Unexpected Situation
“Sir, we are a few kilometers away from the Myriad Castle. It should be in our line of sight once we crest the hill in the distance.”
One of the soldiers under James spoke up, and James nodded from his place on a chariot moving forward. The chariot was crafted from strong wood and matted with silver joints and plaques that denoted his position as a leader in the army. Up in front of James, Duke Grant was also riding in a chariot, but this one was of a far more elaborate design and covered in gold. The chariots were being pulled forward by winged horses, but they were not flying because they wanted the horses and soldiers to preserve their strength as much as possible for the coming fight. Once they crested the hill, they would all take to the sky as one.
The soldiers finally crested the hill and began to descend towards the bottom, but James was shocked when many of them stopped in their tracks as they finally came into view of the Myriad Castle. James frowned as his chariot almost moved past his father’s chariot, and he had to stop it and look up to see what everyone was focused on. And once James saw it, he couldn’t stop his jaw from dropping!
There were hundreds of demons lined up in front of the castle as well as on the castle walls, waiting for the angels to arrive. But that wasn’t what shocked the angel army into stopping. It was what was in front of those demons that shocked them so much.
Angels.
Hundreds of angel prisoners had been tied up and put on their knees all around the demon army. The angel prisoners lined the walls, and they were also put in front of the army on the ground to serve as some sort of barricade against an angel attack.
“What the hell is this?”
James heard his father speak in a gruff, furious voice as his hand tightened on the reins of his horse, and James could understand his father’s anger. It wouldn’t be that big of a deal if the angels that were being used as shields were just soldiers. That would have even been fine since the soldiers would happily lay down their lives to kill some of the demons. But the situation was completely different because even from here, James could easily pick out the forms of young children and women also being used in the shield.
‘That demon lord has gone too far.’
James didn’t even need to think for long to immediately know that this was the work of the demon lord. There was no one else in the demon army that would be capable of thinking up such a diabolical plan. James had only known demons to be mindless tyrants who were more focused on bloodshed and sex than anything else. Being able to come up with intricate strategy was always something he saw as beyond their ability. But it was obvious that this demon lord was not like your typical demon.
“There are no changes to the plans! Prepare to attack!”
Duke Grant suddenly spoke up in a loud voice, and James turned to his father in shock as he heard him say that. What the hell was he talking about? No changes to the attack? Does he really intend to kill all those people!?
Murmurs traveled through the Angel army as many of the soldiers had the same thought James was now having. The soldiers there were already not as motivated as James thought they should be for a proper battle, but seeing something like this just reduced the little motivation they had to almost nothing! They shuffled their feet, and looks of hesitation were filtering through their faces constantly. They did not want to kill their fellow Angels, especially the children and women.
“Father, perhaps we should think of a different plan for attacking. The demons have obviously planned ahead. If we try to force our way through now, we might end up losing more than we planned to.”
James came up to his father and spoke to him in a hushed voice so that only his father could hear. James knew his father was angry at the demons for everything they had been doing. Not only did they take part of the Duke’s territory, but they also kidnapped his daughter and destroyed many of his strongholds. And now they were using the prisoners of war as a shield to prevent the Angels from attacking them. No one would be able to remain level-headed after being put through all that.
But the Duke had to calm down and think about things rationally.
Duke Grant glared at his son in annoyance once he heard what he said, but he did not lash out at him. Instead, he turned back to the castle and looked at all the captive Angels once more. The mere sight of them brought up another wave of anger in his heart that threatened to overwhelm his reasoning, but he knew that his son was right. Attacking like this was only going to leave a bad image for him.
“Look, there’s a demon coming towards us!”
A soldier shouted from the side, and they all turned to the western side of the castle and saw a demon flying towards them. It was a pretty woman with fiery red hair and eyes like sapphire. She had bat wings attached at her waist and her clothing was scanty and very revealing. They all could immediately tell that this was a succubus. The Duke did not recognize exactly who she was, so he knew that she wasn’t one of the more powerful fighters in the army. Was she just a regular succubus sent as a messenger?
The succubus landed in front of Duke Grant and held out a letter towards him with a small frown on her face. The Duke glared down at her, and his hand started to glow with a light skill as he prepared to blast her to oblivion, but a darkening hue colored the sky over at the Myriad castle, and the Duke saw that all the demons there were preparing dark skills to shoot at them.
Were they threatening him?
They only activated their dark skills once he used the light spell, so the Duke could only guess that they were trying to warn him. If he attacked her, then they would attack the army. And since the Angels were hesitant to attack their own people, the army would be forced to retreat. The Duke’s frown deepened as he saw this, and he let the light skill die out and grabbed the letter from the woman’s hand. The succubus gave the Duke a sultry smile, and the Duke cursed the slight feeling of arousal that it got out of him before she turned around and started to fly off towards the castle.
The Duke opened the letter and read through it quickly, and by the time he was finished, a vein was popping out from his neck and throbbing in anger as he squeezed the letter to pieces and tore it apart!
Beside him, James watched his father glaring at the castle with intense hatred and asked what the letter said.
The Duke stayed silent for a moment before he completely ignored the letter and shouted out an order to the army.
“Stand down and prepare a tent for me! All troops stay on guard for any attacks, but do not initiate any battle.”
James was stunned by this and asked his father again what the letter had said. Duke Grant came down from his chariot and finally answered his son’s question with only one sentence.
“The Demon Lord wishes to have a meeting with me.”
