Chapter 621: You Can Never Trust A Demon
The Angels were getting more and more agitated the longer Mark spoke, and Mark could sense their desire to attack him growing.
“You think you are strong just because you managed to win against a few foot soldiers who were attacked unaware? Any of the soldiers in my army would end your life!”
Duke Grant could not let the slander against his army go as he shouted loudly, but Mark kept his cool and looked Duke Grant right in the eye as he finally laid his card on the table.
“But all of this can be avoided.”
Duke Grant blinked curiously and frowned as he just stared at Mark and waited for Mark to say more. Mark stood so that they were both on the same level as he continued.
“You want us gone from your continent and you want your daughter, as well as all the angels we took as prisoners, to be released, is that not so? Very well then, we will happily give them back to you and leave the continent, but only on one condition. You agree to a battle. Your strongest fighter against our own for the fate of our armies. If your fighter wins, then we leave and never step foot on the angel continent again.”
“And what happens if you win?”
James, the duke’s son, spoke up from beside his father as he narrowed his eyes at Mark, and Mark turned to him with a knowing grin before he spoke up.
“If we win, then this battle is over and you will return to your castle. And in return for our generosity, you will deliver a letter to your king for me.”
“A letter…?”
James was obviously surprised, and Mark nodded as Hunn brought out the sealed envelope and laid it on the table. Duke Grant reached for the envelope and opened it there to read through it, and Mark waited for him to finish calmly.
After a few seconds, Duke Grant spoke.
“You want an audience with the King. To talk about… peace? Do you think we are stupid? You want to meet the king after everything you’ve done to our people!? You’ve destroyed our towns, stolen our women and children, killed our men, and now you are using the captured angels as a shield against attacks! You are lucky we don’t just start a war right now!”
Duke Grant was fuming at the end of this rant! He slammed his hand on the table in anger, and the table cracked down the middle under the pressure from the hit! Mark just folded his hands and gave Duke Grant an empty stare as he spoke up.
“And how many of our people have you killed? Don’t talk like you’re the only one that has lost anything in this war. This is war, not child’s play. Don’t tell me you expected to only kill our people while you go scot-free at every turn. I wish to end this pointless cycle of hatred and death once and for all, and for that I need to meet with your king. I don’t know what your opinion on war is and I don’t care, but I am sure that even you have grown tired of all this.”
Mark spoke in that calm, serious manner that forced people to listen to him no matter what, and the Angels could say nothing to his declaration. They were all stunned! A demon was tired of war? This was something they never expected to hear coming from the mouth of the demon lord himself!
Duke Grant eyed Mark with all the distrust that you would reserve for your mortal enemy. No matter how much Duke Grant tried to, he couldn’t sense anything off about Mark’s behaviour. Duke Grant had gotten very good at being able to tell when someone was lying as a leader and knew that if Mark had been lying, then Mark wouldn’t be able to hide it from him. It would be obvious from the way Mark was moving. But right now, Duke Grant couldn’t even sense the slight indication that Mark wasn’t telling the truth.
Was the demon lord really tired of war or was he just that good at lying? Was the demon lord trying to make them let their guard down by pretending to want some sort of peace treaty with the angels?
‘No, I can’t believe it. The worst mistake anyone would do is trust a demon. By the time they betray you, you won’t have anyone to blame but yourself. They’ll stab you in the back and that will be the end of it. They are the ones that started this war and now they want to end it just like that? Don’t make me laugh! A demon can’t change its skin overnight! They are still the bloodthirsty monsters they’ve always been!’
Duke Grant thought this before he tossed the paper back onto the table like it was trash and glared at Mark with intense hatred.
“You think I am a fool that will lead you into the capital and bring you in front of the king just so you can attack him? A demon’s words are worth less than the grains of sand in the desert. Your kind cannot be trusted.”
Riger growled from the side as he grabbed a hold of the large hilt of his sword and prepared to attack Duke Grant for his words, and even Hunn was no longer calm as he started reaching back for his axe. No one would be able to remain calm in the face of such insult. Duke Grant was not only looking down on Mark, he was looking down on the entire demon race!
But Mark still managed to keep his cool even in the face of such hostility. Mark rose one hand and both Riger and Hunn turned to him immediately. Mark gave them a look and they realized that Mark was telling them not to do anything. They both had to force themselves to calm down as they sheathed their weapons and sat back down. Mark turned to Duke Grant and spoke up once more.
“You shouldn’t allow your prejudice to cloud your judgment, Duke. I am giving you a chance to save the lives of all your soldiers in exchange for peace. Let us fight. Whether we win or lose, then the lives of hundreds will be spared, and if you manage to defeat me, then the demons will be gone from your shores. What do you have to lose?”
Mark was right. There really wasn’t much to lose. If Mark won, then there would be no war and they would only have to deliver a letter, but if the angels won, then the demons would be forced back and the angels would gain the upper hand in the battle once more.
And this was also a precious chance for them. Defeating the demon lord would definitely cause serious problems for the army. Without a leader that could stand up against the strongest members of the angel race, the demon army would be forced to retreat until they could summon a new demon lord. And in the time it would take them to do that, the Angels would have taken back both the Myriad castle and the Aragon island. Duke Grant could recognize the benefits of accepting this deal, but there was only one problem.
You can never trust a demon.
