Chapter 638: The King Makes A Decision
“They aren’t my people anymore. I was dethroned by a coup, so right now, I am nothing but an individual. But I want you to think about what I am about to say next. Before becoming the demon lord, I existed in another world as a regular citizen, and after coming here, this allowed me to look at things subjectively. I was able to see how both sides of the war viewed each other as well as the consequences of the actions you’ve taken. If you look at things from the perspective of the demon, then you will see that you are no better than them. In fact, you are worse. You’ve murdered so many of the demons that their race has been driven to near extinction. Your people have also been killed, that is true, but don’t sit there and tell me shit about being the victim in this situation. Because just as you believe you are the victims and that the demons are the ones who started this battle, the demons believe you started all of this, and they are more than willing to sacrifice anything in order to kill their oppressors.”
“We don’t care what the demons think. All we know is that—”
Ephraim had suddenly stepped forward to speak again after gaining some of his confidence back, but he suddenly felt something wrap around his neck from behind him, and his words died in his throat as he swallowed nervously. The chain around his neck was not tight enough to even hurt, but it was tight enough for him to feel it and know that it could kill him at any moment.
Mark gave Ephraim a look, daring him to go on, and Ephraim wisely decided that it would be best not to say anything more. He took a few steps back and Mark turned back to the king and asked him what his thoughts were.
Mark now knew that even though the king was just a child, he had the ability to think for himself. That was enough for Mark to reason with him.
The king was silent for a few more minutes and this time, Mark waited patiently to give the child time to think.
Finally, the king spoke.
“It doesn’t matter what it is that we believe about the demons. I know that the demons are not going to stop attacking us no matter what. They’ve killed thousands of us and we’ve done the same thing to them. It won’t stop until one side admits defeat or dies out. Even if I agree to the peace treaty, how can I trust the demons will do the same?”
Mark nodded.
“I understand, and that is why I’m going to act as the bridge between the both of you.”
The king’s brows furrowed in confusion as he asked what Mark meant by that and Mark continued.
“I am no longer a demon, I never was. And I am not an angel either. So I am going to facilitate another meeting between the angels and demons. This time, the leaders of both races are going to meet up and talk things out with me standing in as a middleman. Your people dislike me, and so do the demons, so you can trust that I will not pick sides. The meeting will be held in two days at the Aragon Islands. You will be there. I don’t care who you wish to bring with you or how you get there, but just know that you will be there, do you understand?”
“How dare you command the king, you demons!”
“You just want to draw him out so you can kill him!”
“You aren’t going anywhere today! We are going to kill you right here!”
The guards around the king spoke up again, and some of them tightened their hands around their swords once they heard Mark’s command. Mark never even bothered paying any attention to them, and the child king raised his hand and silenced them all.
The child king felt something like a stab in his chest as his ego was hurt by Mark’s order, and he narrowed his eyes at Mark. The king had never been ordered to do anything in his life, so this was a first for him.
“Are you commanding me? I am the king.”
“And I don’t give a fuck.”
Mark shrugged as he turned around and started to walk away while ignoring the wide-eyed look from the king. James was standing behind Marknad Mark just gave him a pat on the shoulder as he walked past him.
But Mark stopped as he heard the king speak up again.
“How can I trust your words? You might simply be calling me out there so as to finish me off with the rest of my cabinet. There is nothing in this for me.”
Mark turned his head around to glare at the king, and the king felt something like electricity travel through his body as an invisible chain caressed the side of his face.
“Trust me, Your Majesty. If I wanted to kill you, you would be dead already. When you’re coming to the island, bring all your demands along with you. We’ll settle things there once and for all.”
Mark then turned and left. Once he was gone, all the guards in the room started to rush out to try and apprehend him, but the king stopped them and told them not to waste their time. The king knew that none of them stood a chance against Mark, so there was no need for them to sacrifice themselves pointlessly.
“Your majesty, I believe you have no intention of honoring such a baseless invitation. Since we now know where the demons are going to be, we can launch a surprise attack on them on the day of the meeting and eradicate all of their leaders at once.”
Ephraim spoke up once he was sure that the chain around his neck was gone, but he was surprised when he didn’t hear a response from the king. The king was in a contemplative state as he thought about what Mark just said. After having such a deep conversation with Mark, the king felt more confident in his own abilities all of a sudden.
The King felt like he could think for himself now and, in a childish way, he believed that he was good at making decisions.
Ephraim could literally feel the hold he had on the king slipping away at that moment and he tried desperately to hold onto the leash so the king did not go astray.
“Your majesty, listen to me, please. I am doing what is right for your people and the kingdom. The main families will all rebel if they hear that the demon lord invited them to a meeting and there might be a coup. It is best if we form a large party and raid the Aragon Island on the day of the meeting rather than honoring the invitation.”

The king hummed and tilted his head to the side as he heard all of this, and the throne room was silent for a while before he finally spoke up.
“But he is no longer the demon lord, is he? That means we can at least listen to what he has to say. Prepare the ships, Ephraim, and someone bring me a quill and some parchment so I can draft a document. We are going to Aragon in two days.”
The king had made a decision and there was nothing anyone could do but obey.
