Chapter 642: Respect Is Unnecessary
The werewolf was larger than Riger had been. He had a black coat of fur and sharp white teeth that he bared at the angels angrily before turning away. The succubus was a beautiful woman just like Mildred had been. She had large wings attached to her hips and long red hair that flowed down one side of her shoulder in an alluring manner.
There was a mole under her left eye like a teardrop and it only served to accentuate her beauty and make her green eyes stand out even more than usual. She gave Mark a sensual look when she was introduced before glaring at Arit in anger once she turned to her.
All the succubi and incubi knew what Arit had done to Mildred and they could never forgive it. Damaging the face of a race that was so focused on beauty was sacrilegious as far as they were concerned! It would be the same as spitting on a religious book! They worshiped beauty above all else, so taking away their most precious possession was a sin!
Arit saw the look the succubus was giving her and she just grinned at her in a way that showed off her sharp canine. Arit knew that the succubus was pissed at her and Arit didn’t give a fuck. If the succubus tried anything, then Arit wouldn’t mind giving this succubus the same treatment she gave Mildred.
Mark noticed that the hostility in the room was still very thick, so he cleared his throat and brought attention back to himself to begin the meeting. If things continued like this, Mark knew that it would only be a matter of time before someone lashed out at someone else.
Mark spoke.
“I’m glad to see you all honored my invitation—”
“You didn’t give us much choice in the matter.”
Ephraim spoke up from his place behind the king and Mark gave him a hard glare before turning away and smiling.
“Well, I suppose I didn’t. Your two races are as stubborn as they come and after a hundred years of fighting, I could tell that the only language that you would all understand was violence. I don’t care what you think of me and I couldn’t give a fuck if you understand why I did what I did, but know this. Those doors will remain closed for as long as it takes for us to conclude our business in this room. Until we have all come to an agreement about the terms of a peace treaty between your two races, no one leaves this room. If you have something to say about this, then say it now.”
Mark rested his elbows on the table and placed his chin on his folded hands while glancing from left to right and watching for anyone who had something to say, and just like Mark expected, someone stepped forward.
“I have something to say.”
The person who stepped forward was someone that Mark didn’t recognize. She was an elderly angel with gray hair and a pretty face marked with only a few wrinkles under her eyes. There was an air of regality and calmness around her, and when she spoke, Mark could tell that she was not a warrior. She had a very gentle voice, and Mark didn’t sense any of that strength that most warriors possessed when they spoke.
The woman’s name was Duchess Raphaelia, and she was the leader of one of the largest families in the Angel continent. She had been called here by the king to attend the meeting, and if not for the urgency that the king used in demanding her presence, she would have thought that this was a joke! They wanted to sit down and talk with demons? What sort of nonsense was this?
But now that she was here and seeing things play out just as the king said they would, she couldn’t deny that this was actually happening. They were really trying to strike a deal with the demons. Duchess Raphaelia didn’t have anything against them wanting peace. Many of her children and people had died to the demons in the war; even her husband was killed a few years ago, leaving her with the responsibility of taking care of the family until her son grew up. Raphaelia was definitely not against peace.
But there was still something that didn’t sit right with her.
“You say this is a meeting between the two races to decide on the terms of a peace treaty, so why is it that a demon stands as the proctor? Are you trying to tell me that the demons and angels will bring forward their terms, and then a demon would be the one responsible for deciding if those terms are worth regarding or not? Do you see us as fools?”
Mark eyed Raphaelia silently for a few seconds and thought about just killing the woman, but he calmed himself. Does she really think he is on the side of the demons after everything that he has done to both sides?
Mark spoke up in a hard tone.
“I renounced my position as the demon lord the moment a coup was carried out in the demon army. To begin with, I was summoned here from another world. I don’t know these demons any more than any of you do because I was never a demon to begin with. Does that answer your question?”
Raphaelia frowned and spoke.
“You fought beside the demons and killed our people for their sake. You were their king for some time, and there was camaraderie amongst you all. There is no way you can tell us you do not feel any form of bias towards them.”
“We would rather die than have this monster treat us with any favoritism.”
One of the demons behind him spoke up after hearing what Raphaelia had to say, and Raphaelia turned towards them in slight surprise as the demons continued speaking.
“Camaraderie? Do you think we see this beast as a comrade after he killed hundreds of our people mindlessly? I always thought you angels were fools, but hearing you talk has just confirmed it for me. Your intellect is about as thin as your pigeon feathers. Bird is a fitting name for people with brains as small as yours!”
“You insolent demon—!”
Raphaelia’s face turned purple from hearing the demon talk down to her like that, but she was suddenly cut off from what she wanted to say by the king.
“That’s enough, Raphaelia. We didn’t come here to fight; we came to talk.”
“By your majesty, these demons don’t have a shred of decency in them! How can we have peaceful conversations with them when they don’t even respect us?”
The king looked from Raphaelia towards the demons, and then he finally turned to Mark. Mark could tell that the king was looking for some sort of assurance about what he was to do, but Mark decided that this was something he shouldn’t get involved in, and he just waited and watched calmly for what the king was going to do.

King Richard was silent for a few seconds again as he thought. Mark felt a bit of respect for the king after seeing him struggle so much with making so many serious decisions in such a short time. The king was just a child, so seeing him think for himself and come up with sensible conclusions at the end always impressed Mark a little.
Finally, the king spoke.
“It doesn’t matter if they respect us, we only need them to fulfill their end of whatever agreement we make here. If they do that, then we will be at peace. Don’t you want this war to end, Raphaelia?”
Raphaelia sighed as she remembered all she had lost.
“Of course I do, your majesty.”
“Then please, stop delaying the meeting.”
