Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 644
Chapter 644: Peace Pact
Slowly, almost unnoticeably, Mark began to see a change in the room’s atmosphere. The tense, violent aura that had once been present was slowly starting to bleed away and give way to a more platonic and neutral aura that could only have been born from mutual respect.
The more senseless requests from both sides had already been scrapped out from the documents, so there were only more sensible requests to be considered now, and everyone was starting to see that these requests were things that could be easily fulfilled if they only made a bit of a compromise.
They were still shouting at each other and talking rudely, but they were no longer refuting all of each other’s claims anymore.
But what really made things change completely was when the new leader of the werewolves made a joke about the cicada jelly that the angels were asking the demons to deliver to them and how the succubi would no longer be able to use it to please their customers if the angels took them all.
It was such a dirty and raunchy joke that most of the angels blushed once they heard it, but there was one person who didn’t blush at all.
King Richard put his hands up to his mouth the moment he heard the joke, and the next moment, he burst out in uncontrollable laughter that made everyone in the room turn to him. The laughter was so innocent and childlike that they couldn’t help but stare in wonder as they heard it, and the fact that it was brought about by such a tasteless joke only served to make the entire situation even more humorous, and before long, every single person in the room had started to laugh as well.
Mark chuckled in amusement and leaned back as he watched what was going on between them all.
Arit had also started to chuckle from beside him, and Mark sighed internally as the group slowly eased out from their amusement and got serious once more. But this time, Mark could almost sense a sort of closeness between some of them. The most obvious indication was how the new leader of the werewolves had started talking more to the child king. Ever since the king laughed at that joke, the leader of the werewolves no longer sneered at him or disregarded his words completely. He listened and gave his opinions about what the child king was saying, and if the werewolf did not agree, he just refused whatever the king said calmly.
Mark thanked Sozin that they were no longer at each other’s throats, and as things went on, the first draft of the agreement between the two races started to take form.
The draft was simple. It stated that the angels and demons would no longer carry out any form of violence between themselves, and in exchange for that, they were each going to give up the land they had possessed in each other’s territory and move back to their own continents. There were exchanges of trade routes and land between them, as well as a few commodities that each race saw as essential for the continued growth of their people.
None of this would have been possible if Mark hadn’t been present at the meeting. Mark’s presence gave both sides a sense of security that assured them the other side was not going to ambush or trick them during the negotiation, and since they were all angry and annoyed at Mark for his actions against them, Mark became the common enemy. This allowed both sides to look beyond their dislike for the other and see things more clearly.
As the meeting started to reach its end, the sun had already begun setting on the third day of them being inside the room. Seventy-two hours of nonstop negotiation and quarrels had finally brought them some much-needed closure and an understanding of each other.
And as the sun rose on the fourth day of the meeting and the final day of Mark’s stay in the world of Rosario, they had drafted and signed the Peace Pact.
All soldiers from either side of the war were recalled by their respective leaders to their respective continents, and after a lot of deliberation from both sides, it was finally decided that in exchange for five thousand high-grade mana stones, the demons would declare the island of Aragon as neutral ground that could be used by both races for trade and diplomatic meetings. The prisoners from both sides would all be brought over to the island and then exchanged there.
Mark excused himself from the meeting after he saw that his presence was no longer necessary for it to continue moving forward properly. Mark and Arit walked out to the shore of the Aragon island and watched the morning sun rise gently on the horizon. The ocean was pure blue with patches of red mirrored from the sun, and Mark finally let out the sigh he had been holding in all this while as he felt fulfilled. In a small way, Mark had completely forgotten that this whole thing was a test by Freya. The last month had been hectic, and bringing these two races together gave Mark a sense of fulfillment that he hadn’t felt in a while.
‘I just wish I didn’t have to kill thousands before they finally listened to me. Things would have gone so much better if the first meeting had gone well.’
Arit wrapped a hand around Mark’s waist and put her head on his shoulder from beside him after she heard him sigh. Mark felt his lip twitch as he folded his hands. It took a long time, but MARK was just glad that they managed to get this far. That was what really mattered.
“Mark Vanitas.”
Mark turned around as he heard someone calling his name, and he hummed curiously as he saw Hunn standing there. Hunn had shed his usual armor, and he was now in regular clothing that made him look far less threatening than before. There was tiredness in his eyes that showed just how drained he was, and Mark could definitely relate. Mark was sure that he had the same look in his eyes. No one would be able to keep up appearances after staying awake for seventy-two hours straight.
“I wanted to thank you, Mark Vanitas.”
Mark raised a brow at Hunn’s words before he spoke.
“For what?”
“For giving us a chance to have peace.”
Hunn looked out into the blue ocean for a moment before returning to Mark and continuing.
“I still do not appreciate what you did to my people. Thousands died at your hand, and many of my friends and subordinates were among them. But regardless of the method you used, I cannot deny that the results speak for themselves. We are only standing here today because of your actions, so I find it necessary to thank you for what you did. You might not have been the demon lord we were hoping for, but I am certain that you are the demon lord we needed the most.”
A strange feeling bubbled up from inside Mark after hearing everything that Hunn had to say, and it was only after a few seconds that Mark recognized it as happiness. Mark was happy that someone appreciated what he had done for them.
