Chapter 646: The Garden of Lady Freya
[Now why would you do that to the poor girl, Mark Vanitas? Little Hylga here was only trying to welcome you.]
A voice suddenly spoke up from everywhere, and Mark narrowed his eyes as he heard it. The voice released a sigh like a mother who was disappointed in the actions of her child before it spoke again.
[You know, most men would try their best not to hurt cute little girls. And here you are, scaring one of the cutest of my children. Did your mother never teach you how to behave with women?]
“She died before we could get that far into the textbook. Is that you, Freya?”
Mark raised a brow in confusion, and the voice chuckled.
[Your intuition is correct. Now, I beg you to stop torturing my poor child. Hylga has had a crush on you for some time now, and it appears that you being so close to her was too much for the poor girl to handle. You should see her face right now, she is practically a tomato.]
Freya chuckled in amusement at her own words, and Mark could hear Hylga’s voice crying in embarrassment and trying to get Freya to stop talking about her crush. Freya chuckled again, and promised Hylga that she wouldn’t speak of it anymore before she continued talking to Mark.
[I believe you were worried about your partner. I can assure you she has been taken care of well. Another of my children is having a discussion with her as we speak, and she will be returned to the time and place when she was taken from. As for you, I believe we have a lot to talk about. Would you mind meeting with me?]
Mark felt some relief as he finally confirmed that Arit would be returned back to Earth, and he just shrugged at Freya’s final question. Freya’s voice laughed again in a way that was so soothing that Mark could only describe it as motherly, and in the next moment, Mark was gone.
…
Mark’s eyes opened slowly as he came back to himself, and he squinted as the sunlight peeking through the leaves hit his face. Mark grunted as he felt something soft under his head, and a shadow appeared from above him and blocked out the sunlight to give Mark a good view of someone’s face.
It was one of the most beautiful women Mark had ever seen. Mark never thought he would ever say such a thing about another woman after Luna, but at this moment, Mark couldn’t even begin to find the words to describe what he was seeing. Her face was otherworldly, like something out of a dream and a fairytale mixed together to produce the most intricate features ever possessed by a woman.
And yet, even with all of the beauty she possessed, Mark couldn’t feel any form of lust for her. It was almost like her beauty was not something he could possess sexually. It was something more than that.
It was like the beauty of a mother.
She had long brown hair that fell over one of her shoulders and deep green eyes that gave Mark a warm feeling in his chest that he hadn’t felt ever since his mother died so long ago. The smile on her red lips was kind and playful, and the calm breeze passing across the area only served to make her already perfect demeanor seem even more gentle.
It wasn’t until a few seconds later that Mark realized he had been staring at her all this while without even blinking once, and Mark finally blinked calmly and took in a deep breath. The soft feeling under his head shifted a little, and Mark realized in slight surprise that he was laying his head on her lap.
“Did you put my head on your lap?”
Freya seemed surprised that this was the first question that Mark would ask once he opened his mouth, and that playful smile on her face became kinder as she put some hair behind her ear.
“Well yes, I figured you wouldn’t want to wake up on the hard floor. Even if there is grass, it is hardly a place for someone to sleep. You don’t like it?”
Mark’s mouth unconsciously started to form a smile.
“Your lap is very comfortable.”
Freya chuckled and her hand began to gently stroke Mark’s hair as she spoke.
“It is a mother’s job to ensure her children are always comfortable. At the very least, we should be able to give our children a place to rest their heads no matter where we are. I’m happy I was able to do this much for you, at least.”
The sensation of Freya’s hands gently caressing Mark’s head gave him such a calm and peaceful feeling that a small part of him traveled back in time to when his mother would do the same thing for him sometimes whenever he was about to go to sleep. Mark could barely remember his parents’ faces anymore, but the feelings they gave him never died.
‘I’m getting too comfortable. I need to get up.’
Mark immediately began to sit up once he thought this.
Mark couldn’t risk being too comfortable in the presence of a god, especially a female god. Mark still hadn’t forgotten Sozin’s warnings about the female gods, and even though Freya looked like someone who wouldn’t even dare to harm a fly, Mark still couldn’t be too careful. Besides, Mark was sure that if he allowed Freya to keep petting him, he would fall asleep.
Freya allowed Mark to sit up once he started to, and she rested both hands on the ground and looked up at him kindly as he surveyed the area. They were located somewhere at the top of a hill in the middle of a large valley of flowers. There were plants and flowers for as far as the eye could see, with a large array of colors that painted the horizon in all the different shades of the rainbow and more. The sounds of birds and exotic animals filled the garden and added a layer of calmness to it that only nature could possess.
Mark looked down to his left and he felt his mouth twitch as he saw a tiny bunny sniffing at his shoes. Mark was about to bend down to touch it, but the bunny quickly hopped away from him and towards Freya. Freya pet the bunny a few times, and the bunny rubbed itself against her lovingly before it hopped down from the hill and towards a family of bunnies that were waiting for it at the bottom. Mark felt irritated that the bunny didn’t allow him to touch it and instead went to Freya, but he tried not to let it show on his face.
Freya gave Mark a smile as she noticed his irritation, and Mark just huffed in slight annoyance as he continued looking around at all the plant and animal life around them. There were a ton of animals here that Mark didn’t recognize, and he could only guess that they were from planets other than Earth’s. There were some that looked like tiny dinosaurs and others that floated over the flowers without any wings, like ghosts. But the most eye-catching thing in the garden was what was beside them. On the same hill stood an enormous tree that was larger than any other one in the forest and was helping to block the sun out from over their heads.

The tree’s trunk was twice as large as Mark’s body, and when Mark put his hand on it, he could feel the tree pulsing beneath his palm.
It had a heartbeat.
“They’re beautiful, are they not?”
Frey’s kind voice floated towards Mark.
