Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 648
Chapter 648: A Cruel World
Mark couldn’t stop the amused scoff he released once he heard Freya say that. Mark could relate to them thinking Sozin was a pain in the ass, but hearing Freya curse like that contrasted so much with her character that Mark found it unbelievably amusing. Sozin must’ve really done some crazy things to the gods for someone as peaceful as Freya to call him a pain in the ass.
Freya turned and started to walk down the hill and toward the garden in the distance, and Mark raised a brow as he saw this. Didn’t he already say that he didn’t want to see the garden? Why was she going down there?
Freya turned to him with a knowing smile, as if she could tell exactly what he was thinking, and waved him over.
“I’ve decided I want to show off to you after all. I want to walk through the garden as we talk. Won’t you keep me company, child?”
Mark sighed internally as he heard her say this, but he didn’t argue as he followed behind her. Freya ran her hand through various flowers and touched most of the barks of the trees that they passed, and Mark could literally see the flowers shiver at her touch and the trees lean into her as she passed. It was weird seeing inanimate objects move around so much, but Mark just figured that this was something special because of who Freya was.
The animals in the garden all became more active and excited by Freya’s presence. The bunnies hopped beside them, the phantoms that floated around them moved faster, and there were even small birds flying over their heads constantly. Mark thought that Freya was the goddess of motherhood and love, but it appeared her powers also extended to animals and trees. From what was happening all around them, it was obvious that nature adored her.
They walked in silence for about five minutes, just trekking from one side of the garden to another, but no matter how far they walked, Mark noticed that they were not getting any closer to the other side of the garden. Mark looked back and saw that they were already far away from the hill that he woke up on, but the other side of the garden was not any closer. What the fuck? Was this some sort of spatial ability that Freya had in this dimension?
“Before I tell you what Sozin meant when he spilled those secrets, is there anything else that you would like to know? Maybe about the world that you just left? You might not know this, but I have total control over the worlds I created, so I can move time ahead as much as I want to. You might’ve only just left that world, but I could tell you what happens a thousand years after your exit. Aren’t you curious?”
Mark hummed thoughtfully once Freya spoke. Was he curious?
Truthfully, Mark couldn’t deny that he was. Mark knew that he didn’t fail the test. He got them to sign a peace treaty as Freya commanded him to, and that was all he needed to do to pass the test. Mark had successfully passed. Mark didn’t need to know what they did with each other now that he was gone.
But a small part of Mark had attached himself to those people. You can’t possibly lead and kill thousands of people from a world and not feel some attachment to them. Mark had stayed with them for a month, and in that month, he had taken more lives and experienced more battles than he had in most of his eighteen years of life.
Were they able to overcome their hatred for one another and eventually move on to something more sensible, or did they immediately fall apart once a problem arose and regress back into war?
Mark put his hands in his pockets, and the next words that came out of his mouth surprised even himself.
“I’d like to know.”
Freya stopped touching the plants around her and put her two hands out towards Mark expectantly. Mark realized that she was asking for one of his arms so she could hold it while walking, and Mark sighed internally once more before he gave it to her and allowed her to latch onto him before they continued to walk.
Freya smiled as she spoke.
“Very well then, I shall give you the basic summary of the next thousand years. The peace treaty signed by the races during the Lock In was very successful. It might not have looked like it, but many of the lower-ranked soldiers in both races were tired of the war and death, so they agreed easily once they saw that their leaders were in support of it. The angels and demons exchanged prisoners and started to move their armies back to their respective continents. But the demons, Riger and Mildred, formed a resistance army with the undead and began a coup that threatened to break apart the peace. They called the other demons traitors, and they almost overthrew Hunn as the acting demon lord until Hunn asked for assistance from the angels and managed to subdue the resistance army.
“All the members of the resistance army were executed, and I can only give you credit for that act. Your final words to Hunn were what made him do something he would have never done normally, so good job. The peace between both races continued for a long time and lasted for nearly three hundred years. But after the last of the former generation had died, both races had another falling out due to the ambiguity of ownership over the Aragon islands. The demons claimed ownership over the Aragon islands once more, and the angels fought back, claiming that they had paid for ownership over the island. The document detailing the sharing of the island had been lost to time, so both races believed themselves to be right. Both races were at odds with one another again, and it escalated until another war broke out and consumed the world. This time, all the minor races were eradicated before they could go into hiding, and after half a millennium of war, the Angels eradicated the demons and repopulated the world for themselves. Now, another half a millennium after the angels repopulated the world, all memory and proof that the demons had ever existed has been lost, and the angels believe that they have always been the only species to exist on Rosario.”
Mark’s face had scrunched up the moment Freya said that the races went to war again, and by the time she finished, Mark had a sour look of irritation marring his face. Mark could feel some anger bubbling up from inside him at the thought that the people he fought so hard for were eradicated, but he forced that anger back down. There was nothing he could do about that world. It was none of his business.
Mark took a deep breath, and the next words he spoke were spat out in a scathing tone.
“You created a cruel world, Freya.”
Freya stopped walking and turned back to him in surprise, and Mark just looked at her unflinching. What Mark said were his true feelings. The world that Freya had created was cruel. Putting angels and demons in the same space and giving them such a deep-seated hatred for each other was not only wrong but also sadistic.
