Chapter 657: How Are Things Going?
Jeanne shook her head as she started to lead Arit away to another room. There was no way Jeanne was going to allow Arit to do this to herself. It was still early, so Jeanne would have no issues getting rid of it if it turned out that Arit was really pregnant. Even if Arit says she wants to keep it, Jeanne would try to talk her out of it. Jeanne was not going to let Arit halt her education and life because of something like this!
“You told me you want to be a doctor, didn’t you, Arit? This isn’t how a doctor behaves! A doctor thinks about the consequences of their actions before they do anything! Protection exists for a reason! Who gives a fuck if it doesn’t feel the same? You have to wear some fucking protection no matter what! Now tell me how long—”
Ka-Cha!
Jeanne had been dragging a nervous Arit away while saying all this, and Jeanne’s voice trailed off as she and Arit entered another room and shut the door. Mark finally leaned back on the couch with a sigh as he turned to look at Pat. Pat was still holding the outlet he brought for his sister, and Pat just threw it behind him with a shrug before sitting beside Mark while talking.
“You really need to control yourself more. I get that sister-in-law’s really sexy and all that, but making mistakes like this can be bad in the long run, especially with how messed up our lives are. Just thinking about bringing a baby into this messed-up reality is pretty twisted. You’re lucky you know a doctor like my sister.”
Mark nodded. He didn’t need Pat to tell him all that. He knew it already. But that wasn’t the only thing Mark came here for. Mark leaned forward and asked Pat if he had gotten anything new from the syndicate lately.
Pat shook his head and rubbed his eyes tiredly as he stood up to get a drink from the fridge. He threw a beer at Mark and popped another one open for himself. Pat was still not old enough to drink, but who cared?
Pat had been awake for days trying to find anything he could based on what information Salazar had given out during the torture sessions, but it was still difficult because of how secretive the Syndicate was. They barely even had a digital presence at all!
Pat spoke up after drinking from the can.
“Nothing concrete. There’s been news about strange monsters popping up here and there all over the world, and the MDS has picked up some strange mana activity around cities in the US, but the mana activity is mostly due to the recent monster outbreak. The residual mana is going crazy, so that explains that. The strange monsters popping up are usually myths and folklore that I don’t need to follow far to disprove. If anything, the world’s been quiet recently. Too quiet. It’s like the monster wave in America didn’t even cause a stir anywhere else in the world.”
And that was the strange thing.
Pat didn’t need to say the last part for Mark to understand that this was unusual. Normally, a wave this large would cause at least some sort of issue in another part of the world. Maybe some monsters crossed the ocean and appeared elsewhere, or even another anima hive got agitated and awakened by the Armageddon somewhere else.
That was what happened during the last Armageddon attack, so it was weird seeing that there was nothing this time. Maybe it was because of how this wave happened?
Mark knew that this wave was orchestrated and executed by Salazar, so it was likely that he would know why everything was so quiet. Mark had been holding Salazar in Luna’s personal prison for a while now. The American government found out about Salazar moving into Kevin’s body somehow, and they asked Mark on various occasions to hand Salazar over, but Mark ignored all of their requests. They got a chance to kill him once, and that was all they were going to get. Mark was going to handle Salazar from now on.
“I’ll talk with Salazar again and see what else he can tell me. He’s been getting angsty since he doesn’t know when he’ll die, so I can use that against him. We’re going to have to speed things up. Something’s coming.”
Pat raised a brow.
“The fucker doesn’t want to die? Won’t he just reincarnate again?”
Mark had given Pat a basic rundown of what Salazar’s powers were after his fight with the Armageddon, and Pat figured that Salazar would actually want to die more than he would want to live since he was simply going to go into another body somewhere they couldn’t find him.
But Mark said that this time was different.
“No, not this time. I made a deal with Loki that if Salazar dies again, Loki will take Salazar’s soul and torment it inside Limbo for eternity. Salazar’s been begging nonstop that I don’t kill him yet, so I’m going to use that to get as much information out of him as possible.”
Pat shook his head as he threw his can aside. The can clattered to the floor beside the dustbin and Pat just shrugged as he took another beer. Pat knew that Mark had a mean streak in him, but this was really something else. Torturing a man with the threat of death and eternal torment was really not something Pat wanted to know too much about.
Pat looked out the window at the side of the condo and frowned as he saw some birds flying past. There was dust and smoke on the horizon, and Pat figured that it was from the evacuation and reconstruction going on in all parts of the city, or maybe it was from another anima attack on the other side of the city. Finally, after a while, Pat decided he had to ask.
“What exactly is coming?”
“I don’t know yet.”
“I’m gonna need more than that, Mark. The last time something came, half the country was reduced to ashes. Is it something like this? Something that could destroy the entire country?”
Mark was silent for a while, but when he finally spoke, his words made Pat’s heart skip a beat.
“It’s something worse than that. This isn’t going to affect only us here in America. It’s going to affect the entire world. I really don’t know what it is this time, but from what I was able to deduce, it’s most likely related to the syndicate. They aren’t playing around, so we need to get serious too.”
Pat sighed. Pat hadn’t been playing around all this while, and he had been more than serious about getting information on those fuckers, but Pat couldn’t say that to Mark. Not when he hadn’t gotten anything concrete yet.
There were a few channels and avenues that Pat hadn’t explored simply because they were too dangerous for him to go into alone, and he decided that he would have to recruit some freelance superhumans from the underground to help him look into those leads. They had to get even more serious now.
The room descended into silence as the two men just drank beer, and only the sound of Arit and Jeannie’s mumbled conversation from the other room was heard for a while. But finally, Mark spoke up about something different.

“How’s recruiting going? I heard from Luna that her guild’s been helping you out.”
Mark asked this as he finished his own beer and threw it into the dustbin easily, and Pat was thankful for the change in topic. Pat shook his head as he said that it was going smoothly.
