Chapter 666: What Sort of Creatures Were These?
The next time it met humans was in a secluded village off the coast of Russia. There were more than fifty men, women, and children living in that area, but the beast did not care to count them. It was still hungry, and although it was curious about humans and what they were, it didn’t feel the need to ask questions until it had its fill. The beast eradicated the village from the map without a single survivor left behind, and in the midst of the carnage, it realized what it was that the humans called it. The beast now knew that it was an ‘anima.’
Now that the beast was filled, its curiosity for humans was once more active, and it went into the next town in a more careful manner. The beast didn’t want to announce its presence because it knew that humans were terrified of it! It was a natural predator to humans, so they would attack or run first before it could even talk to them.
It stuck to the shadows and moved around alleyways and dilapidated buildings as it made its way to the center of the town. The sights it saw confused it for the most part! Humans beating humans… humans hurting humans. Humans killing humans. And the reasons for these actions were so pointless. Sometimes, there was no reason for it at all.
What sort of creatures were these?
The beast did not understand what humanity was, so it classified them as a strange species in its mind. Humans possessed a great fear of death, but once they were facing off against a weaker creature, they displayed a great amount of violence and cruelty. They gained a sadistic pleasure from causing pain to those that they knew could not fight back against them.
After watching humans for a while, the beast finally decided that it wanted to know more about them and found a way to corner one of the humans in an alleyway. The human called herself Eva, and the beast decided that she was good enough for its experiments. The beast followed the girl as she led it to her hideout. The hideout was rundown and dark, and there was a strange green liquid dripping from the ceiling at the side.
The beast did not understand why the girl lived here since it had seen many humans living in large stone structures before, but the beast did not care since it was used to sleeping in nature. The girl and the beast stayed together for a long time. At first, the girl was terrified of the beast. The girl would stay on the opposite side of the hideout and shiver in fear no matter what happened. Even when the beast did not look at her, she would still shiver from fear. The beast went out on most days and brought back bits and pieces of human parts. It ate most of it and gave some of it to her, but the girl always screamed in terror when it did that, and the beast realized that the girl couldn’t eat what it ate. The beast learned what humans ate by watching others around, and the first time the beast brought bread for the girl, she just stared at it in shock and disbelief.
But after not eating for so long, the girl hesitantly reached for the bread, and the beast grunted as it watched her eat. Good human.
A few more days passed in this manner, and the beast continued to speak with the girl. Their conversations were innocent. Simple questions about what the girl did and why she did it. Questions about the country she lived in and why some were living in stone structures while others lived outside. The girl answered most of the questions easily, and the beast began to understand more and more of the world as time went on.
By the time a week had gone by, the beast and the girl were going out together at night. The girl needed to find food for herself, and the beast was curious about these ‘superhumans’ that the girl had told it about. They ran into one of the soldiers that the girl said was in charge of guarding the slums, but the beast easily killed the soldier from the shadows before it could kill the girl.
The next day, the number of soldiers in the area around the slums had increased. News of what was happening to the soldiers had gotten out, and now they were hunting for the beast. But the beast was not easy to find, and eh soldiers did not have the strength they needed to deal with the beast. With the constant death of soldiers increasing every day, the military finally stopped sending soldiers to the slums. It was only the slums, after all, and as long as the monster didn’t go near the main cities, then the government didn’t really care.
After this happened, there was a shift in the power dynamics of the slums. The lack of any real protection from the soldiers led to the rise of gangs, and thieves became more rampant. But out of all of them, the girl and the beast were seen as the highest authority. No one knew about the beast’s identity, but they all knew that the girl possessed a monster that protected her from the shadows.
The beast watched curiously as the girl became more and more confident every day. The girl started to move with pride, and she began to take advantage of her position at the top of the food chain in the slums. The girl ordered food every day for her, and whenever the beast was hungry, she would take them to a secluded part of the slums and lure a human there for the beast to eat.
It was a strange experience to see the changes in a human. Was this truly the best that humanity could offer? The beast had lived amongst the humans for a long time now, and it was finally starting to realize the truth of these humans. They possessed a desire for freedom unlike anything the beast had ever seen, and if there was ever a time when they felt like their freedom was being taken away from them, they would lash out violently and angrily to take it back.
But when faced off against something far stronger than them, most humans would lose their will to fight and begin to act meek and scared. Was it a form of tactic they used to appear harmless to their attacker? Did they do that so that their attackers would underestimate them and so they would be able to launch a counterattack when their attacker least expects it? The beast was not sure.
But the beast knew that although they might act meek and scared, humans were not the calm and peace-loving creatures they portrayed themselves to be. Once a human sees an opportunity to inflict the same pain it had felt upon another human and the human knows that there would be no repercussions for their actions, most humans would do it. Even if the human they was attacking had nothing to do with what had happened to them, it did not matter.
Humans were vindictive creatures.
The beast was able to finally see the true nature of humanity on a night like any other one. That night, the girl had gone out with the small gang of men that she started to keep around her as her lackeys. The men were loyal to the girl, and they did whatever she wanted. The girl asked the beast not to eat any of them, and since the beast wanted to see what the girl was trying to do, it decided to agree to her request and left the men alive.
