Chapter 675: What Are They Doing?
Mark knew exactly what the host was doing by pointing him out like this. This was a memorial service, but it was also a charity event that would lead to people bringing out money. By pointing out Mark, they were basically ensuring that people would want to donate more, either to bring attention to themselves as well or to impress Mark by making him aware of their generosity. And since Mark had been praised like this now, the hosts knew that it would be harder for Mark to not give even more than he had intended to. They were basically trying to get Mark in a good mood. It wasn’t a bad tactic as far as Mark was concerned.
Mark understood all this because it was a typical business tactic that people used when trying to secure deals, so he was used to it and didn’t feel irritated by it at all.
When a light was shone over Mark’s table for people to get a better look, Mark just raised a hand for a second in greeting. Arit had a small blush on her face as she looked around at all the people clapping for them, and Mark realized that she was uncomfortable with all the attention and waved his hand calmly to tell them to cut the lights out. The lights were immediately turned off, and the host continued giving thanks and calling out people who were important in the charity event.
The host called out the president of America, Marilyn, and even governors of various cities. Mark was surprised that he was called before they were, but he didn’t pay it any mind as he listened to the event.
Finally, after some time, the speeches began. There were moments for silence and memorial readings as those superhumans and civilians who lost their lives in the battle were remembered. But that only lasted for about an hour before it was quickly wrapped up. Everyone knew that the real purpose of this event was to generate as much money as possible, so they didn’t spend too much time on the memorial at all.
After the hour was over, Matilda finally came up and started her own speech.
“Once more, I would like to thank everyone for coming to today’s event. My name is Matilda Lindsworth and I am an A-rank superhuman that was on the ground when the Anima’s first emerged. I’ve seen the extent of the damage that was done to the people and buildings all around the country, and I know just as much as anyone else how desperately the citizens require our help. We will not demand anything of anyone here, but we only ask that you give what you can in the quantity that you can. Various charity organizations and their causes will be handed out to you in pamphlets, and as we call out their names, you can pledge your support to their cause with any amount you find fitting. Thank you.”
Once Tilda’s speech was done, many ushers wearing suits came around and handed out pamphlets to the various superhumans. The person who brought Mark’s pamphlet was a petite girl with a cute face, and she had a small blush across her cheeks as she handed it to Mark with both hands. Mark thanked her with a small smile, and her blush increased even more, but she quickly speed-walked away when she felt a stare directed at her and looked up to see Arit glaring at her in irritation.
Mark put his hand on Arit’s lap under the table, and Arit felt her anger dissipate immediately as she felt a jolt travel up her body. Arit’s left leg was exposed because of the slit in her gown, so Mark was able to put his hand right on her naked skin. Arit quickly grabbed her own pamphlet and started to read it seriously while trying to ignore the heat of Mark’s hand on her skin, but Mark’s hand traveled up her naked left leg until it was almost at her crotch and Mark squeezed her thigh hard. Arit released a small moan as she shivered from head to toe!
Everyone at the table immediately turned to Arit in surprise, and Arit muttered out a quick apology while hiding her face in her pamphlet! Arit hoped that none of them heard her moan, but she knew that it was impossible since everybody here was a superhuman! The moan might have been silent to humans, but for a superhuman, it would have been the same as a freaking bell ringing in their ear!
Arit thought she would die of embarrassment, but then she looked over her pamphlet again and saw that only Luna was still looking at her. The rest of them had turned back to the speech that Tilda was giving and were ignoring her. Luna gave Arit a knowing smile, and Arit smiled shyly and ducked her head to continue reading the pamphlet. Arit didn’t know how they all ignored what had happened, but she was just glad they did.
Mark had been the one that made them all ignore it.
Once they all turned to Arit, Mark gave them all a look without bothering to take his hand off Arit’s thigh, and they all understood and looked away to keep watching the speech. Talia and James didn’t know what it was Mark was doing, but Talia knew that there were times when big-brother and big-sister wanted to be left alone, and this was like one of those times, so she just distracted James and gave Mark some privacy.
Luna kept her eyes on Arit for a few more seconds before she sighed internally. Luan was seated at the other end of the table beside Greg’s wife, and at that moment, she wished that she was sitting on Mark’s other side. But if she said she wanted to go there now, wouldn’t it look like she just wanted Mark to touch her? Well, she did. But that doesn’t mean she wanted everyone to know that! She still had her modesty as a woman!
The charity event continued with them calling out the first series of organizations that needed funding, and Arit paid attention to the organizations and their causes closely.
“Up first is the Gregory Rothman foundation located in city S and focusing on the development and rebuilding of office buildings…”
The names called seemed harmless enough but when Arit read the organization’s cause off the pamphlet that had been handed to her, she never felt like giving to the organization since the organization’s cause was never appealing enough to her.
But as time went on, Arit started to notice a trend in all of these organizations. It was a strange thing to notice, and Arit would have ignored it on another day, but after studying strategy under Mark for so long, she was now more capable of picking out these small things that people would ignore, and she learned to trust her instincts more.
The superhumans were focusing more on the business-related organizations.
It wasn’t obvious at all, because on paper, this was supposed to be a charity event and the organizations written on the pamphlets were focused on developing shelters, parks, or even companies that would help the survivors find ‘aid’ afterwards. There were other organizations that were more focused on humanitarian activities on the pamphlet, but the donations to those causes weren’t as high as the ones to the more lucrative organizations.
Were they using this as a business opportunity?
Arit felt a little anger rising from deep inside her as she realized this, and when she turned to look at Mark, she saw Mark smiling at her. At that moment, Arit realized that Mark also knew what was going on, and he was just waiting for her to figure it out for herself.
