Chapter 687: Meeting With The Higher Ups
Gasp!
Mark suddenly gasped as he came back to the real world, and his ears pricked as he heard a voice talking from his side.
[Mark? Mark, are you there!? Mark!]
It was Luna talking through Mark’s phone, and Mark realized that Sozin had brought him back to the time he left, right in the middle of his conversation with Luna. Fucking bastard.
Mark recalled what he and Luna had been talking about and he quickly put the phone to his ear and told Luna that he would be at the guild office soon. Luna released a sigh of relief once he spoke, and Mark wondered if she thought something had happened to him. It was strange to have someone worry about his safety with all the power he possessed.
[Mark, are you okay? You went silent for a while.]
This time it was Arit who spoke up. They had both been shopping together, so Mark figured out that Arit must’ve asked Luna for the phone. Mark finally told them both that he was fine. He just zoned out for a minute. Mark told them that he had something to talk to them about as well when they get to the guild house and he cut the phone after they agreed to meet up there.
Mark rubbed at his temple gently and sighed tiredly as the memories of his conversation with Sozin came back to him. That bastard was really something else. Mark didn’t remember a single conversation with Sozin that ended without a headache. It was like Sozin was always choosing the best possible time to bring up the worst possible news just to fuck with Mark!
Mark already knew that he had to get stronger. It was something that had been on his mind for a while now, but hearing it from Sozin like this showed Mark that he didn’t just have to get stronger. He had to get stronger very quickly! And he had to also increase the power level of every single person in the world somehow.
‘No, that would be impossible.’
There was no way Mark could convince the entire world that there was a danger coming and they should start preparing for it. Mark had already done something like that when he was at the charity fair, but it just ended up on the news for a few days before things started to go back to normal. Nothing really changed in the world. The reason for this was simple: humans were reactionary creatures.
In a situation where impending doom was not immediately visible, humans have always been known to not care at all about it. The only time when humans would really start to panic about any situation was when they realized that their lives were really on the line and they might die if they didn’t do something about it.
Mark still remembered the conversation he had with the American president, Marilyn, and George, the Vice Director of the Superhuman Alliance. After Mark’s speech at that charity event, he decided to honor the invitation from the president and he was led by Alec Ben toward an inner chamber where the president, George, and some members of the military were waiting for him.
Mark was with Arit and Luna when he went, and all three of them were given seats at the large table in the middle of the room before the president spoke. And just like Mark had suspected, the first thing she brought up was Mark’s speech.
“Mr. Vanitas, first, I’d like to formally congratulate you on your recent achievements in the country. What you did was not only a great help to us the citizens, but also a great help to our military personnel who didn’t have to go up against the monster and risk their lives. But on the note of what was said in your recent speech, is there perhaps something about the country that you do not like? I don’t mean that in any particular way, I’m just trying to tell you that we are more than willing to make any changes to the country’s laws or decree’s that you want so that it will be more appealing for—”
Mark rose his hand when the president’s speech started to get too long and he leaned forward and told her to just get to the point. Marilyn swallowed in slight nervousness. Even though she was the president, she was still a regular human being, and just sitting in a room with these many superhumans was enough to put her on edge. Finally, she spoke up.
“We do not wish to lose you to any other country, Mark Vanitas. So we are prepared to do anything necessary to keep you in America, no matter the cost.”
Mark rose a brow in surprise and looked around the table at all the old generals and members of state that were giving him pointed looks. They were more than prepared to do anything, and Mark just sighed as he leaned back in his seat. Mark knew that they would misinterpret what he said in that speech, but he didn’t think they would misinterpret it this much.
“There’s nothing that you can do about my decision.”
Mark raised a hand to stop Marilyn from talking as he saw her open her mouth. Mark wanted to finish what he was saying first, so she had to relax. Marilyn nodded in understanding and Mark continued.
“What I said in that room, all of it was true. I commend what was done in the recent Armageddon attack, but that is nothing compared to what is coming. I understand your position, but I cannot be held down to America alone, not anymore. There are people around the world that need help and there are things out there that I need to get my hands on, so I will be leaving America in frequent intervals. I didn’t say I was going to leave it permanently. This is my home and I have too much invested in this country for me to leave it for good, but no one is going to tell me where I can or cannot go. If I ever feel like you are trying to prevent me from going out of the country, even for a fucking moment, then I will dissolve every asset I possess and I will be gone. Do you understand?”
Mark let his eyes trail over the room as he gave everyone there a pointed look. Mark wanted to make sure they understood that he was not asking them for permission to leave the country; Mark was going to be leaving the country as many times as he needed to, and he would do it whenever he damn well pleased. It was either that or he would leave for good.
One of the generals at the side, an old man with a long scar running down the left side of his face, finally spoke up.
“And what do you wish to do in these other countries that you will be visiting? I’ll have you know, an American superhuman acting in another country will not only bring up many questions but also international incidents that will bring more trouble for us. You are the most powerful superhuman in the world and unleashing you on any country would be the equivalent of unleashing a nuclear bomb on them; they will not be happy if you entered their country without prior notice and a good reason.”
Luna sat up before speaking.
“We aren’t going there for vacation, general. Mark already said what he intends to do in those countries. The enemies are not going to rest, so we are going to assemble a task force from all over the world that is capable of answering these issues no matter where or when. And if a country is under attack from a monster capable of destroying them and killing all of their citizens, I don’t think they’ll mind too much if we jump in to help them out.”
The general frowned as he heard Luna speak and he scoffed and turned away while muttering something in irritation. Mark’s eyes narrowed at the general, and the general quickly looked away in fear and kept quiet.
