Chapter 689: The Country of Melbourne
After saying his piece, Mark left the meeting with the President and Generals, but even as he left, he could still hear the groans of frustration from many of the generals in the room when they heard his answer. They obviously were not happy that Mark was going to become something they couldn’t control, but Mark didn’t care.
Mark sighed as he stood up from the couch in Luna’s living room, grabbed his coat and keys, and called on Talia to tell her that he was going to the office. Talia and James were playing together with some of the superhuman maids that wouldn’t be hurt by their roughhousing, and Mark gave Talia a kiss on the forehead and ruffled James’s hair playfully while the boy protested in embarrassment before he got in his Vanitas Avatendor and drove off to the guild building.

[The Anima is a large Eldritch-class Spider with some sort of electric-based ability. It was first spotted off the coast of Australia, but now it has moved to the mainland and is in the city of Melbourne. It’s created a sort of webbed territory, and anyone who has tried going near it has been killed by the spider’s children. Each of the children are Calamity-class anima, so the superhumans available there already have their hands full dealing with that. The Superhuman Alliance is still drawing up a plan to send in some aid, but from what I can see, the spider will finish whatever it is doing long before t.hey can send in help.]
Mark listened to Pat’s words as he walked toward the large military-grade helicopter with Luna and Arit following beside him. He was wearing standard military gear. A pair of cargo pants and black boots with a black t-shirt and his [Armor of Ares] in the form of a military vest over it all. Mark had his [Gauntlets of The Thunder God] active on his forearms and when all this was added to the [Symbol of Gaia] present on his forehead, it gave him the unique appearance of someone going into war.
Luna and Arit were also dressed in fighting gear but Luna’s set was more breathable and lighter to allow for easier movement during fights. Arit, meanwhile, was wearing something similar to Mark. The only difference being that Arit decided to not wear anything on her hands since she needed to stab her hands into the bodies of her victims to absorb mana from them.
Jeanne was talking to one of the military doctors at the side and planning how they were going to attend to the victims of the anima’s rampage when they land, and Mark gave her a nod of acknowledgment before he boarded the plane.
The large military plane had been donated by the Superhuman Alliance when the Vanguard Guild announced that it was going to be leaving for a mission to help out in Australia. It turned out that the Superhuman Alliance was also sending out a few superhumans to help out in Australia, so they had offered to give Mark and the other members of his guild a ride on their aircraft.
Along with Mark, Luna, and Arit, other members of Luna’s Moonlight Guild were also present. Some of her vice-captains and high-ranking members of the guild who possessed abilities that would be of use to them in the battle were also following along in their aircraft.
Once they boarded the plane, Mark put on his metal face mask, and it immediately made him look just like an assassin from a video game.
It was Luna who pointed this out, and she offered to show Mark which character he looked like when they got back. Mark just laughed at the comparison and told her that he wouldn’t mind playing the game when they finished things in Australia.
The trip from the Federal Republic of America to Australia would normally take close to ten hours if they had used a regular commercial flight, but with the military helicopters that had been modified for superhumans moving at their maximum speed without worrying about G-force since everyone in the helicopter could easily handle it, it didn’t even take them five hours before they saw the island continent of Australia in the distance.
There was smoke rising from various broken and torn-down regions in the area, and as the helicopter passed overhead, some anima on the ground roared and hissed at them as they were attracted by the sound.
Luna put her hand up to her ear and started to talk to her guild members on the other helicopter. She instructed them to go down and check for survivors while taking care of the stray anima that remained behind in the ruined downtown, and one of the helicopters behind them broke off and went on its way to do as Luna had instructed them.
The other helicopters continued towards the city of Melbourne, where the largest anima around was reported to be waiting.
“Pat, I need eyes in the sky. What does it look like down there?”
Mark put his hand to his ear as he spoke up to Pat. Mark was standing at the back of the military helicopter. The cargo hold was open, so Mark could easily see the path of destruction that the anima had created as it moved towards Melbourne. Australia had a lot of powerful superhumans, but they did not have anyone that was capable of handling a high-ranking Eldritch-class. The only reason why the country hadn’t already been razed to the ground was because the anima had chosen to set up a nest in Melbourne and hide inside the nest while reproducing small Calamity-class anima that were causing even more damage around.
The superhumans were more focused on destroying the smaller Calamity-class anima, and they just left the Eldritch to its own devices since it wasn’t moving for now. They didn’t want to risk pissing it off by launching an attack that wouldn’t even cause it any harm at all.
But Mark knew that this was a bad idea. Allowing an anima of that strength to finish what it had already started would be the same as handing over your country to it. If the anima finishes what it was doing in that nest, there was every possibility that it would end up destroying all of Australia.
Pat’s haughty voice came through Mark’s comms, but instead of the response that Mark was expecting, Mark was surprised when Pat’s voice came back as an annoyed shout!
[Get away from me, you crazy woman! What are you even doing here!? Mark, tell her to fucking leave!]
[This is my office too, you can’t lock me out! Let’s just work together!]
[No!]
Mark sighed tiredly as he heard Grace and Pat arguing over the comms. Mark thought that after spending close to two weeks together, these two would have found a way to get along, but he had seriously underestimated just how much of a prick Pat could be. The bastard was always locking Grace out of the large office in the Moonlight Guild building. Even though it had been Grace’s office first, Pat had commissioned it once he saw that it had a lot of high-tech, and he declared that it would be his own office from then on.
But Grace didn’t back down, and she tried everything to stay in that office too!
At first, it had been hilarious to watch them argue, but now, it was just fucking annoying!
“Patrick! Focus!”
