Chapter 700: Have You Heard Anything From the Gods?
Tyler decided that instead of trying and failing to keep his guild afloat, it would be better for him to become one of the affiliate guilds under the Vanguard Guild. That way, they would still be able to function as normal, but Tyler wouldn’t have to worry about them being dissolved since they were being protected by the much stronger Vanguard Guild.
But even though he combined his guild with the Vanguard Guild, that wouldn’t have been enough to give him a place at the executive table. Tyler had worked hard over the past five months, and with the boosts granted to him by being one of Mark’s allies, he was able to make his way into S-rank and become one of the strongest American guild leaders around.
The French man at the table suddenly spoke up with a thick French accent that dragged Tyler out of his thoughts and made everyone turn to him.
“Hello, leader! Another timely mission! News of your great exploits in Brazil has already reached us here! The size of the beast you felled was truly gruesome! And Madame Luna! Oh, you are radiant like the sun! Beautiful as always! I knew you would be coming back quickly!”
Mark raised a brow at the French man and just said that the monster was no trouble at all. It was just another Eldritch, so it didn’t even take him an hour to deal with it. The real issue was finding the monster in the first place.
The man seemed to get even more enthusiastic when he heard how nonchalant Mark was about defeating such a powerful monster and Mark just scoffed in amusement!
Luna just gave the French man a small smile. The French man was named Louise.
Louise was one of the more vocal members of the executives who always gave out compliments like water. But no one really said anything about it because they all knew that he meant well. And none of them were surprised at all by the constant compliments since he was French. It was common knowledge that the French were more in touch with their emotions than most other people and they weren’t afraid to say whatever was on their minds to whoever they wanted to.
“Was there any trouble with the monster in South Africa?”
Mark directed this question to Louise as he took a seat at the head of the rectangular table with Luna sitting beside him. Louise and Tina had gone on the mission to Africa together to help out with a subjugation. Louise had a blessing from Hephaestus that allowed him to control liquid metal. The metal could be easily heated up using his blessing and then controlled as a weapon in any way he wished.
Louise’s blessing was very similar to Luna’s blessing, but the only difference was the fact that Luna had far more control over water than Louise had over his metal. Louise was only an Epic Rank II, but he had enough skill to handle multiple lower Eldritch-class anima on his own, and since he was someone who always cared about others, Mark paired him together with the battle-hungry Tina so that he could balance out her lack of awareness during fights.
The African woman who was sitting with her eyes closed clicked her tongue in irritation as she heard Louise speaking. Her eyes might’ve been closed, but Mark could almost picture her rolling her eyes at Louise before she turned to where Mark sat down and spoke.
“Mr. Vanitas. Is there a reason we were summoned? I was trying to communicate with my god before you called on me.”
The African woman was one of the more reclusive members of the executives. Her name was Tola and she had joined them from a Nigerian guild that focused on fighting against monsters that appeared from the coastal regions of Africa near Lagos.
Mark had been surprised when he learned that Tola spoke regularly to her patron god, just like him. Tola’s patron god was one of the African gods known as Ogun and she had been blessed with the ability to ignite anything that she laid her eyes on instantaneously. The ability was so strong that Tola had been known to set low-level Eldritch-class anima on fire and chase them away from her due to the pain they felt.
The only downside of the ability was that it grew weaker the stronger the opponent was. Tola was an S rank, so she did not have enough power to harm anything that was far above S rank. During training, Tola had tried using her ability against Luna once while Luna stayed still and didn’t use any mana to defend herself and it had ended up with only a small cocoon of heat surrounding Luna’s body, making her clothes begin to release smoke, and Tola’s eyes started to bleed from the strain of going too far with her blessing. But for Tola to be able to do something like that against someone like Luna, who was far more powerful than her, showed just how strong her eyes were and how much potential she had.
Tola had also tried using her ability against Mark during another training session, but that ended with her needing to be healed after her eyes almost burst from the strain. Her blessing didn’t even work against Mark, and Tola swore never to try something like that again!
Mark hummed at Tola’s question and told her that he wasn’t the one who called the meeting.
“Pat said he had something to show us, so he called the meeting. If you want to know why, then you should ask him.”
Tola frowned and turned away from Mark when he said this, but after a moment, she turned back to him and asked a question that made everyone else in the room sigh tiredly.
“Have you heard anything from the gods yet?”
Mark smiled tolerantly and said that he hadn’t heard anything yet. Ever since Sozin told Mark five months ago that he would no longer be involved in the lives of the humans, all the gods that had once been part of their lives had gone silent. Mark told the guild members that this was because the gods wanted them to handle the syndicate on their own, but many of them didn’t understand fully what that meant, and people like Tola, who had been very close to their patron god and spoke to their god constantly, were the most affected by it.
Tola thought that Ogun had abandoned her, and she had been trying at every moment to contact him. She would go to quiet places, spiritual places, and even temples that were dedicated to Ogun just to try and talk to him, but there had been no response from him so far. If not for the fact that she still had her blessing, Mark was sure that she would’ve become depressed already.
Once, about three months ago, Louise told Tola to stop wasting time on the gods and to focus more on being human and living her life without worrying about what the gods were doing. Mark was sure that Louise hadn’t meant anything by what he said, but the fact that Louise said it in his usual French accent that made everything that came out of his mouth sound slightly sexual made Tola lose her fucking mind because she thought eh was trying to get her to sleep with him, and she immediately set him on fire in anger!
The fight that ensued that day was legendary.
