Chapter 702: They Are Evolving Faster
“At first, the mana cluster we saw was located around here at the coast of Russia. I couldn’t get the proper satellite imaging around there since those fucking Russians are a lot like those bastards out in Japan. They’re very strict about their satellites and they refuse to allow American satellites anywhere near their hemisphere.
“I did my best to keep my eyes on the coast of Russia though, and after a few weeks, the mana cluster started to move. It was strange because we’ve never seen a cluster do this before. Normally, when a cluster gets to land, the anima immediately makes it’s way onto that continent, and they’ll only move again after they’re done with their attack there, but this one never even made port in Russia. It moved away from Russia, around the Asian continent, and is now making a straight line for Japan here.
“I’ve been watching anima movements for a long time now and I’ve only seen anima acting like this a few times before and none of them have been good. The cluster is acting in a premeditated manner, almost like—”
“It’s consciously making its way to Japan for some reason.”
Mark finished off what Pat was going to say before Pat could, and Pat gestured to Mark to signify that he was correct. Mark knew that a sentient or intelligent anima was nothing new. There had been many anima in the past five months that could even speak and understand language, but there had only been very few anima that would ignore the chance to kill humans when presented with the opportunity.
The fact that an entire cluster of them were acting in this way at the same time made Mark’s suspicions grow to an unbelievable level. The red dot on the screen was moving very fast and it was already very close to the Japanese islands. Even if they mobilized the Vanguard branch on the Asian continent, they wouldn’t be able to catch up to the cluster because of how far out it was into the ocean. From the way the cluster was behaving, it almost seemed like it was consciously avoiding any form of contact with humans so it doesn’t get detoured from reaching Japan.
Mark knew that anima would always kill no matter how intelligent they were. Even if they wanted to make their way somewhere else, or if they were only looking for something or someone like that ant-headed anima that had been looking for him almost a year ago, they wouldn’t be able to resist the urge to kill humans if they saw the opportunity.
So for this anima to show up without causing any harm to the people in Russia and then leave for Japan while avoiding human contact could only mean that it was capable of suppressing its bloodthirsty nature. Mark knew that this was supposed to be a good thing for humanity as a whole, but for some reason, the mere thought of an anima possessing self-control gave Mark an uneasy feeling in his heart.
These bastards were evolving even faster.
Mark looked at the map on the screen and the large red dot that showed the anima moving through the sea towards Japan. The MDS had been irreplaceable to the Vanguard guild for the past five months, and Mark couldn’t even express just how much it had helped them out in the subjugation of many anima so far.
Five months ago, Pat had thought of selling off some of the rights to use the MDS to other guilds that would need it, but Mark had stopped him from doing it after giving it some thought. It wasn’t that Mark didn’t understand the benefits that could come from selling the right to the MDS, but Mark also knew that something like the MDS would be fucking dangerous in the hands of the wrong person.
Some fucking bastard could buy it and then start using it to kill off superhumans from a distance using their mana signature. That wouldn’t sit right with Mark.
So instead of selling off the rights, Mark suggested that Pat should create a backdoor where other people could hop on the signal of the MDS and use it, almost like Google Maps. But instead of being able to see everything, the others could only use the MDS to view the mana signature of anima that were around them.
This had been the perfect suggestion as far as Pat was concerned, and it didn’t even take three days for Pat to create an entire social network that ran only on the anima-tracking feature of the MDS.
It exploded in popularity faster than any other product that had ever existed.
Once people learned that there was a network they could use to track anima around them, everyone wanted a piece of it. Civilians, military personnel, guilds, even the fucking mafia and members of the underworld were clamoring to buy into the social media network.
Pat decided that since the network was so popular, they could use it to bring in even more money for the guild, and he wanted to put in a paid membership plan of nearly a hundred dollars a month for people to use it, but Mark smacked the bastard on the back of the head and told him that he was crazy if he thought people could pay that kind of money.
Yes, the MDS was important, but people were suffering too much right now for them to try and extort so much out of them. Mark told Pat to try again, and Pat gave him a middle finger and went back to the drawing board.
This time, Pat came up with various versions of the MDS. The different versions gave you a view over different radii of land. So, the lower-paid versions which were only twenty dollars told you if there was an anima in a one-kilometer radius around you, and the highest-paid version, which was over a thousand dollars a month, gave you a view over the entire country.
There were other versions that could give you views over more than one country at a time, but those ones were only available to military organizations and guilds.
The military had been difficult for a long time, and some of the government officials were threatening sanctions and lawsuits because they wanted Pat to release the complete version of the MDS to them so that they would be able to tell where the superhumans were as well, but Mark had blocked every single attempt by the government to strong-arm Pat into doing that.
The lawsuits, threats, and even bribes never even made it to Pat at all because of the army of lawyers Mark had taking care of everything. And after a while, the MDS was ruled as intellectual property, and Pat was given full discretion over his decisions on what to do with it.
The network was extremely popular with the masses, and it helped the Vanguard guild to not only gain even more popularity and a good rep, but it also gave them a massive monthly income stream that could be put towards other things.
