Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 731
Chapter 731: Dwindling Feelings
“Megumi! I just got a message from your brother! He mentioned the wedding invite to you and you didn’t even acknowledge it! He was angry at me because he thought I didn’t give it to you! I really didn’t want to tell him that you weren’t coming! Just open it and say that you’re too busy to go! I already prepared a bath for you and a change of clothes. The meeting is in three hours, so you can relax for a few hours before you have to go. Oh, and there have been sightings of another Eldritch somewhere in Tokyo, but the Golden Lion Guild is there already, so they will most likely take care of it. I’ll keep you posted about what happens.”
Yukki’s voice slowly went down in volume as the helicopter stopped making so much noise, and she continued talking as they entered the large building. The inside of the building was extraordinarily clean; the walls, ceiling, and floor were all painted a pure white, and only the utensils, furniture, and designs around the house gave it any splash of color at all. Yukki frowned as she saw Megumi making a trail of black blood on the white floor as she entered, but Yukki didn’t say anything because she knew Megumi wouldn’t listen to her.
Suddenly, Yukki heard something in the house that almost made her jump in fright.
“Sake wine.”
It was such a calm and smooth voice that echoed gently through the house, and Yukki was absolutely lost for a few seconds at the sound of it before she suddenly realized that the voice belonged to Megumi! Megumi spoke!
Yukki turned to Megumi with wide eyes that showed just how shocked she was, but Megumi just frowned at her, and this was able to bring Yukki back from her shocked state and allow her to realize that she had been staring all this time!
Right! Sake wine! Sake wine! What in the world could Megumi possibly want to do with sake wine?
Oh!
Yukki almost seemed to realize what Megumi was speaking about in a split moment, and it was like a lightbulb went off in her head as she nodded like a puppy!
“Sake wine as a wedding gift for your brother and his wife!? Yeah, I’ll see which one is the best in the market and send that. Are you going to the wedding, or should I just put down that you won’t attend?”
The house was silent for a few seconds as Megumi just stared at the wall in front of her. Finally, she spoke as she started walking to the bathroom on the other side of the apartment.
“I won’t go.”
…
Woosh~!
The sound of water pouring out from a shower slowly died out as Megumi turned the faucet in her bath. Megumi stepped out of the shower slowly, revealing her toned body that had been tempered from years of constant battle. Her legs were long and fit, and her abs were so well sculpted that it almost seemed like you could grate a block of cheese on them! She had a modest bust and well-defined muscles on her arms. Her long black hair fell down her shoulders in black waves and framed her perfectly oval face in a way that made her look mysterious and alluring all at the same time.
Megumi’s sword was leaning against the wall of the bathroom beside her, and she only glanced at it once before turning away. Megumi always moved around with her sword so that she would be ready for anything, and even when she was sleeping or taking a bath, her sword was always right there beside her.
Megumi walked up to the large mirror on the side wall of the bathroom and looked into it at her reflection with dead, emotionless eyes. There was a sink in front of Megumi, and she leaned forward while putting her hand on the sink so that she could get a very good look at her face.
Megumi hated this. She hated what was happening to her, and she hated the fact that there was nothing she could do about it.
It all started four years ago when Megumi first got her powers. The feeling surged through her body to indicate her strength increasing every day was a constant part of her fights as she gained more and more power with each enemy she took down. Megumi was blessed by Ares, the god of war, and it was almost like a cheat code for her when she discovered just how broken her abilities were. It didn’t matter if she killed an ant or a monster as large as the Tokyo Tower, she would gain an increase in strength that was relative to the strength of the monster that she killed, no matter what!
But Megumi noticed something only two years ago that nearly broke her. As Megumi grew stronger, Megumi was slowly losing the ability to feel anything.
Megumi didn’t understand it at first. She thought that there was something wrong and that the sudden inability to feel was just a byproduct of her not finding anything interesting in the world anymore, but after some research of her own, Megumi realized that this was not the case at all. Megumi still found things to be interesting, and she still knew the sort of reaction that she was supposed to have to certain things. She was meant to be sad when she missed her favorite show. She was supposed to be flattered when someone called her beautiful. She was supposed to be angry when someone tried to look down on her.
But there was just nothing inside of her. No emotion rose from her belly. There was no movement of her heart or even a surge of hormones that made her irritable. It was like her body had stopped producing any sort of reaction to the external stimulus it was receiving.
Megumi was slowly losing all form of empathy and emotion. It slowly progressed over the years, and her emotions became more and more distant the more she killed and grew stronger. It was obvious to Megumi that the loss of her emotions was directly tied to her strength, and the stronger she grew, the more of her emotions she lost.
For a moment, Megumi thought about throwing in the towel! If she was losing her emotions because of her killing monsters, then wouldn’t it just be better for her to stop killing so that she wouldn’t lose any more of her emotions?
But someone like Megumi would never do something like that. Megumi was the strongest superhuman in Japan, and there wasn’t a single person in the country who could handle the number of monsters that she handled at the speed that she handled them. It would be like signing the death sentence of all the citizens around her if she hung up her sword. And since Japan was an island nation that had a constant stream of anima showing up from the ocean on various occasions, it was just not possible for Megumi to go even a single day without killing at least two anima.
Megumi hated it. She hated it so much that she felt like screaming. But there was no way she could do that either.
She didn’t have the emotional capacity to scream anymore.
