Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 735
Chapter 735: Strongest
No high-level superhuman saw this tournament as something worth participating in, and they would rather just be out there fighting against anima.
Megumi suddenly had a realization when this thought crossed her mind, and she spoke to Genshi stoically.
“Are you trying to make me fight against the Superhuman Alliance agents from other countries?”
That was the longest sentence that Genshi had ever heard Megumi speak in the past year, and it showed just how shocked and irritated Megumi was by the very thought of something like that. Putting Megumi into such a tournament against Superhuman agents would be like putting a lion into a cage with deer. She would massacre them, and it would turn into a one-sided bloodbath!
“HAHAHAHA!! I wish you could still show emotion! It would have been a treat to see the look on your face!”
Genshi laughed loudly at the mere thought of putting Megumi up against the Superhuman Alliance agents, and he quickly added that this was not possible. It would be impossible to do something like that.
Genshi laughed again as he saw Megumi just staring at him, and even though he couldn’t see it on her face, Genshi had the impression that she was glaring at him. Genshi eventually allowed his laughter to die out, and he finally produced another paper while talking.
“No, I wouldn’t want you to fight against those people. It would be a violation of their human rights. But there is someone else that I think you would be far more interested in. I already told you that the Americans have thrown their hat in the ring for the upcoming battle, and I don’t think you’re a stranger to how much I’ve been blocking the American guild, Vanguard, from making their way to our shores. I don’t need to explain my reasons to you, but it seems I have underestimated the Americans. For the first time in the tournament’s history, we have gotten an announcement of a contestant before the tournament was even announced to the public, and I am sure this will make waves all over the world once it comes to light. Mark Vanitas, the man hailed as the strongest in the world, has decided to participate in the upcoming tournament.”
It was only for a split second, but even Megumi’s lack of emotion couldn’t stop her eyes from widening slightly at that announcement, and she looked down at the paper that Genshi had slid over to her to take a look. And just like Genshi said, right here at the top of the paper where the list of contestants was listed out, Mark Vanitas’ name and country flag were already present.
“Wow.”
Megumi didn’t need Genshi to say anything more after that. She understood exactly what it was that Mark Vanitas was doing on this list, and she also knew what he was trying to achieve. Genshi had made it his life mission to keep the Vanguard guild out of Japan, but there was nothing that Genshi could do about the tournament that involved the entire world, and since Genshi couldn’t stop the contestants from making their way into the country, he wouldn’t be able to stop Mark Vanitas from finally making his way into Japan. It was such a convoluted plan that Megumi couldn’t help but be impressed.
And now that Megumi understood what Mark Vanitas was doing by registering for the tournament so early, Megumi also understood exactly what it was that Genshi was trying to achieve by bringing her here.
“You want me to keep my eye on him.”
Megumi said this while turning up to look at Genshi, and Genshi nodded as he took a paper fan out from inside the arm of his kimono and pointed it at Megumi.
“This tournament is one of the most prestigious in the modern world, and I am going to make sure it is carried out on an island close to Japan that has enough space for all the battles to come. I won’t be able to do anything from where I am if Mark Vanitas goes out of line, so I need someone there who is more than capable of not only keeping an eye on him but also keeping him in check if he tries to do anything to endanger the country. The only person in the world that can do that is you.”
Megumi looked down at the paper again and the picture of Mark that was placed beside his name. There was a tattoo on Mark’s forehead that drew Megumi’s eye, and she wondered what sort of fashion statement that was before she looked down at his face. Four years ago, when she was still a normal girl, Megumi would have thought he was handsome. But now, she felt nothing.
“I thought he was the strongest in the world.”
Megumi said this to Genshi, and Genshi just scoffed as he unfurled his fan and started to fan himself gently. That title of ‘strongest’ was thrown around so pointlessly in this world. Everyone thought that the loudest person was the strongest just because of one feat of strength. Genshi could still remember a time when Gunter was hailed as the strongest superhuman in the world because of how intense his strength and fire were, and there was also a time when the Russian president was hailed as the strongest when the man killed an Elder Eldritch-class monster single-handedly.
Even the leader of the former Moonlight guild, Luna, had been hailed as the strongest once upon a time, but that had only lasted for a short time before people started to hail Mark Vanitas as the strongest after he defeated the Elder Eldritch Octopus on the coast of City F in America.
“The term ‘strongest’ is thrown about too much these days. You and I both know that it is nothing but a desperate expression of worship, something people use to classify and objectify their idols because they can’t think of any other way to do it. Tell me this, Megumi. If a battle occurred between the Armageddon class that Mark Vanitas killed and you, do you believe that you would lose?”
The office went silent after that question, but it didn’t even take two seconds before Megumi’s soft voice rang through the office again. She only said one word.
“No.”
Megumi knew that she could eradicate that Armageddon if she had to. Genshi smirked and snapped his fan closed before sitting cross-legged and putting his hands on his knees.
“Then you are in no way inferior to that Mark Vanitas. The term ‘strongest’ is not something the weak have any right to throw around. Only the strong can determine who is truly the strongest. It has been five months since that fight occurred, and you have also grown stronger in that time due to the recent surge in anima appearances. I want you to be the deterrent that keeps Mark Vanitas at bay in our country. I don’t know what he is planning to do here, but I know that with you there, he at least will not be able to cause any trouble for our people.”
Megumi looked past Genshi at the large scroll where life and death were written in Katakana behind him and thought about it. Megumi did not have any obligation to participate in this tournament, and she knew that if she refused Genshi here, there was nothing he could really do about it.
