Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 738
Chapter 738: Hesitation
Mark knew that the news channels would have a field day with the announcement of him entering the contest, but he never thought that they would start talking absolute nonsense.
Luna laughed at Mark’s reaction and she finally finished signing the last document before she sighed and stood from the desk while stretching. Luna was wearing a white pencil skirt that came down to her knees with a white blazer over a black blouse. The outfit hugged her body perfectly, and Luna knew Mark liked it when she saw the way Mark had been staring at her earlier today. If they were at home, there was no doubt in Luna’s mind that Mark would’ve tried to fuck her in the outfit!
Luna walked over to the couch where Mark was lying down and she pulled his head up and sat down on the couch before putting his head on her lap. Luna ran her hand through Mark’s hair softly as she spoke.
“Have you chosen who else you’ll take with us for the tournament?”
Mark had already picked out three of the five members Henry said he could choose for the tournament. The first two people were obviously Mark and Luna themselves. The both of them were the strongest superhumans available in the country, so there was no need to debate over that one at all. The third member that Mark chose after thinking for a while was Tina. Even though Tina was a wildcard who enjoyed going too far with her jokes sometimes and could be unreliable because she didn’t follow orders properly, Mark knew that she was more than capable of holding her own against any other superhuman that they would meet in that tournament.
Mark decided that he would just allow her to run free like some sort of wild animal after they got there so she could cause as much trouble as possible for the other teams.
But after these three people were chosen, Mark ran into a few problems. The first problem was the fact that Mark could not choose any other member from the Executives of his guild as one of the members. The reason for this was simple: Almost none of them were American.
The tournament that was coming up was an international contest that would feature superhumans from various countries, not various guilds. So it didn’t matter what guild they were a part of, every superhuman in his guild had to go back to their own country and compete for them.
Mark would have chosen Tylor as one of the contestants, but Tylor just didn’t have the raw power that he needed to have to compete on a stage like this. One of the reasons why Tylor was so powerful before was because Fiona was erasing all of his mental limits and allowing him to push himself to the brink every single time. But without Fiona there, Tylor was not able to do that.
The second issue that prevented Mark from choosing the remaining two participants was the fact that he was hesitant to pick Arit as one of the contestants. Arit was strong, Mark couldn’t deny that no matter what. But Mark also knew that Arit was now a non-combatant. Arit had taken her dreams very seriously and she went to become an apprentice under Jeanne in the hospital. Mark didn’t know if it was right for him to drag Arit away from that to bring her back into the world of superhumans for something like this.
Would Arit even want to compete?
Luna’s hand trailed down the length of Mark’s hair as she waited for an answer from him, and after some time, Mark finally spoke up.
“I still need to talk to Arit about it. I don’t know if I want her to join or not since she’s been working so hard to get her license. Making her get back into this part of the superhuman world might affect that. I don’t even know if she wants to come back.”
Luna raised an eyebrow in surprise and asked Mark why he would think that Arit wouldn’t want to join. Arit had already fought in many battles before and she was more than capable of defeating any regular superhuman that showed up at the tournament. Why would Mark be hesitating to ask her to join?
Luna heard Mark sigh and she frowned and removed the magazine that was on Mark’s face so that she could look him in the eye. Luna saw Mark frowning at the ceiling and she asked her question again. Why would Mark be hesitating to ask Arit to compete?
“Arit never liked the superhuman world. Even now, I know she doesn’t like the things that happen in this part of the world. The way we prioritize one thing over another or how we sometimes cause a lot of damage in our fights. It’s always been like that, but she still came in here because of me. She wanted to fight for me and she went out of her way to accept everything that the superhuman world was just to make sure she stood by my side. But now, she’s made it. She’s exactly where she has always wanted to be since even before I met her. I don’t know… maybe I just don’t want to be the one that takes that away from her.”
Luna was shocked into silence after hearing everything that Mark said. It wasn’t even what Mark said that surprised her, instead it was the fact that Mark was saying those words. Luna knew just how rare it was for Mark to show any form of vulnerability, so him being able to speak his worries and doubts so easily showed Luna that Mark really trusted her. Luna knew at that moment that she couldn’t just brush this over. She really had to give a good response that would allow Mark to make a decision. And Luna already knew what it was that she had to say.
Luna sighed calmly and ran a hand over Mark’s hair again. As her hand trailed over his hair, Luna lowered the temperature of her hand so that it would give Mark a calming sensation to make him relax. Luna spoke up after a few seconds.
“You know, Arit and I have been speaking about our work a lot lately. When I first met her, I didn’t really know what sort of person Arit was. She was very determined when it came to you and I could tell that she truly loved you, but she didn’t have much else that she cared about. It was almost like the world could end tomorrow and she wouldn’t care as long as you were alright. But now, I hear Arit talk about her work and the things she does at the hospital with Jeanne and I realize that maybe I was too shortsighted. Arit cares about her job a lot, but that isn’t the reason why she does what she’s doing. The only reason why Arit decided to become a doctor in the first place is because she wanted to protect the people she loved. Arit told me about what happened to her mother and how that made her want to be a doctor because it was the best way for her to make sure it wouldn’t happen to anyone under her watch. But that was before she found you. That was before she fell in love with you.”
