Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 749
Chapter 749: World War
The connection was very weak since it was further than a hundred miles away, but Mark was just able to get something back before the link closed. The falcon chirped and informed Mark that it was only a few hours away from the shoreline, and from the falcon’s eyes, Mark could tell that it was close to nightfall.
‘I won’t be able to see what’s happening, but Pat uses the MDS, so he should still be able to scan the area properly.’
Mark took in a deep breath and sighed calmly. For some reason, Mark felt like this was the one moment when he was going to be able to breathe this freely for a long time. That natural instinct that most humans had, which allowed them to predict when trouble was just waiting for them in the future, was already starting to warn Mark of things to come. Mark knew that whatever they found on that shoreline would probably be the catalyst for something that would change the way the world was right now.
After some time, Arit and Luna came around and joined Mark in his room. There was more than enough space on the bed for all three of them to sleep together, so they had chosen to stay in the same room for the night after putting their stuff in different rooms. Mark told them both about seeing Megumi outside the airport earlier that day, and they were both surprised when Mark mentioned that she might be as strong as he was.
Arit and Luna both knew about Mark’s current disinterest in fighting since he couldn’t find any powerful opponents that could keep up with him. There was once a time when Luna and Mark were training together all the time since she was the only one who could fight him on equal grounds, but after a few months, even that wasn’t enough anymore since Mark just got so strong that he could defeat her in a minute at most.
So for them to hear that the Battle Angel was actually that strong was shocking! Arit frowned as she asked Mark what he was going to do about it. Would it affect the plans that they made about searching through Japan for the anima cluster that Pat spoke about?
Both Arit and Luna knew that entering the competition was only an excuse for Pat to search through the Japanese servers and get access to their satellites. If Pat finds something important before ht tournament starts, then Mark was going to abandon the tournament entirely to take care of the issue first.
The three of them were already in bed as they spoke about this. Arit and Luna were wearing their underwear, and Mark was only wearing a pair of shorts as he lay in the middle of both girls. Mark was lying on his back with both hands behind his head. Arit had her head on Mark’s right shoulder as she looked up at his face, and Luna was lying on her stomach and leaning her head on her hand while looking down at Mark and listening to what he was saying.
Mark shook his head at Arit’s question and told her that it wouldn’t change the plan.
“We just have to make sure they don’t get any clues about what we’re doing. For now, we don’t have to worry about anything since we’re only doing recon. But when we find out something, then we might have to ditch the tournament or maybe create some sort of distraction to find out more about what’s going on.”
Luna put her hand on Mark’s chest and rubbed it slowly while talking.
“But Patrick hasn’t found anything yet, has he? I can have Jane look into things as well if you want. She has a stealth-based blessing that allows her to move without being seen by anyone lower than Undefined. That’s why I brought her as one of the non-combatants. If we need more eyes at the shore, then she’ll be a great help.”
Mark hummed as he thought about this. Jane was one of the superhumans from the Vanguard guild that they brought along as a non-combatant. She was only an A rank because her blessing didn’t have many practical applications in a fight against an anima, but her stealth blessing was strong enough that most people wouldn’t be able to even notice if she was standing right beside them.
Mark spoke up after a few seconds.
“That might be useful. I already had one of my summons moving towards the area, but I don’t think I’ll be able to see what’s happening in case of an emergency. If she can get there before nightfall, then she can help us get a good look at things. Just tell her to be careful.”
Luna smiled and nodded before she leaned forward to kiss Mark and then sat up in bed to grab her phone for a call. As she did that, Arit sighed and wrapped her hand around Mark’s neck while burying her face in his neck and taking a deep breath.
“We’ve been so busy lately, I don’t think the three of us have had a chance to just rest like this in a long time.”
Mark nodded along, and he closed his eyes as he felt Arit’s hand move to his forehead to rub against the symbol of Gaia that had etched itself in there. The three of them had been so occupied with missions and Arit’s job at the hospital that the chance for them to come together like this was very rare. It was usually only Mark and Luna or Mark and Arit hanging out together, with Luna and Arit going out together very rarely. Even now that they had the time to spend together, it was only because of another mission that they could be like this.
Arit’s hand on Mark’s face was soothing and gentle, and when Arit spoke next, Mark was already close to falling asleep.
“Mark, do you think the gods are right about the anima? Is there really another KING that already appeared?”
Mark hummed as his eyes fluttered open for a moment before he said that he didn’t think the gods would lie about something like that. It seemed too serious for them to be lying.
Arit sighed.
“So where do you think he is? Shouldn’t something like that already be big news? We’ve been working in so many countries around the world, I don’t think we would have missed out on something like that happening.”
Mark shrugged calmly as he said he did not know. Besides, Mark knew that what they were dealing with now was completely different from what they were used to.
“The anima are getting smarter every day. They don’t attack humans as mindlessly as they used to, and some of them even form plans and carry out complex maneuvers. I wouldn’t be surprised if the KING was somewhere out there planning something. I hate to say it, but right now, humanity is the more vulnerable species. We aren’t ready for a war, and for all we know, the enemy might already have enough soldiers to form an army. We just have to do the best we can to prepare for the worst-case scenario.”
Arit’s brow furrowed from the intensity of Mark’s words, and she had to sit up slightly as she asked another question in a more serious tone.
“And what would be the worst-case scenario?”
Mark’s answer was immediate, but no less terrifying.
“A World War.”
