Chapter 758: Pre-Tournament Event
Arit knew that dealing with the Russians in the tournament might be the best way to reduce casualties as much as possible.
Luna also sighed as she saw the sense in Mark’s suggestion. Luna didn’t like the fact that they were just going to allow the anima to continue whatever it was that they were planning, but Luna knew that it would be stupid to say anything about it now instead of waiting for a better time. And besides, Luna was more than aware of the fact that the Japanese government didn’t like them at all. If Mark said something now, then it was more likely that they would ignore him just because they didn’t like him. And if they listened to him and tried to attack the monster, then too many lives would be lost in the process.
Waiting until they were on an island where only superhumans were present was the ideal situation.
Luna asked another question.
“But what about the Russians? Are we just going to allow them to get away with whatever it is that they’re planning?”
Mark stayed silent for a few seconds and thought about this. The Russians were an issue, but with the sort of power that Mark felt from them, it wouldn’t be difficult for him to handle all of them on his own if he had to. In fact, it wouldn’t even be a problem for Luna to do it herself!
Rather than causing issues by fighting against the Russians without proper proof of what was happening, it would be better to get the Russians together on the island first and then handle all of them together over there. That way, no one would be able to interfere and they wouldn’t have to worry about causing any damage to the mainland during their fight.
“We’ll also leave the Russians alone for now. We’ll keep an eye on them and make sure they aren’t causing any issues before the tournament, but other than that, don’t do anything that’ll make them suspicious and don’t tell the government about them yet. I’ll go talk to Genshi later about what we found out and see whether or not I can convince him that there is an issue. I know he won’t believe me, but I want him to at least be conscious of the danger.”
…
[The Next Morning]
The issue at the docks concerning the anima was handled rather quickly once Megumi and the other superhumans from Japan arrived on the scene. It turned out that the anima was actually one of the strongest Elder-Eldritch monsters ever recorded, but thankfully, Megumi had more than enough power to handle it while preventing it from causing any damage to the surroundings.
Mark spread the information that Pat had gotten from the MDS as well as the fact that the Russian team were lying about their intentions to the rest of the American team that came with him. Alec and the rest of the Alphas were surprised when Mark told them that there was something larger going on at the tournament. The Alphas had only come to the tournament because they wanted to win it, so for Mark to be telling them that they were investigating some ploy by the syndicate in Japan was the last thing they expected to hear.
Alec suggested that they should simply move to apprehend the Russian team and force them to say what was going on, but after Mark explained all the damage that could bring as well as the fact that it might cause the anima that snuck into the horde to attack prematurely and begin killing people, Alec decided that it would be best to just wait until the actual tournament started before doing anything. The rest of the Alphas were a little difficult to convince, but since Alec was their leader, once Mark convinced Alec, it was easy enough for Alec to order them not to say anything.
Mark told all of them that their mission from that point on wasn’t just to fight in the tournament, but it was also to make sure to keep an eye on the Russians and the other competitors. Mark couldn’t be too sure who he could trust in the other teams, but at the very least, Mark knew that he could trust the Alphas and Alec since he had spoken to all of them and none of them had lied about being surprised by the current situation.
That morning, the actual ceremony for the beginning of the tournament was going to be held in Tokyo. The tournament was going to take place the next day, but today, the competitors were going to be presented to the people who came to watch and it was going to be broadcast over the news to draw in even more viewers for tomorrow.
Each team was handed a uniform that they were supposed to put on. Once Mark heard about the uniform, Mark was immediately against it. Why the fuck did he have to wear a uniform like some sort of show pony? Mark only agreed to all of this because he wanted to get into Japan in the first place, so he started to debate whether or not it was even worth it anymore!
But after Mark saw the uniform, Mark decided that it wasn’t that bad. It was a set of black cargo pants, a black t-shirt, and a black jacket over it all. The organizers had chosen the same outfit for everyone in each country based on the attire worn in their countries, but they were all in black. Each country had a tag on their left breast that showed their country’s flag. This way, everyone would be able to tell who was a competitor and they would also be able to tell which country they were from.
The uniforms also came with one other breast tag that had the word ‘captain’ written on it. This tag was to be worn by whoever the country decided was the captain of their participating team. Once the Alphas saw the tag, they almost got into an argument as Alpha One tried to take the tag for himself, but before anyone could really start arguing, Alec came around and grabbed the tag before handing it over to Mark. Mark just stared at the tag in mild annoyance for a moment, and Alec told him that he didn’t think anyone else here could lead them as well as Mark.
Although Alec wasn’t the biggest fan of Mark, Alec couldn’t deny that Mark was a natural-born leader. Alec still remembered how Mark guided all of them through the fight against the Armageddon and how he helped them win many battles in the past. And now, even at his young age, Mark was already the leader of one of the strongest guilds in the world. Alec knew that if anyone could get them the victory here, then it was Mark.
Mark didn’t bother arguing too much since he didn’t want to make a big deal out of things, and he just took the tag and put it on the spot below the American flag on his chest. It wasn’t like it really mattered anyway.
