Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 762
Chapter 762: Speculation
At the front of the Superhuman Alliance building, a beautiful Japanese woman wearing the traditional kimono was standing with both hands on her stomach and a smile on her face as she waited for Mark to approach. Once Mark got close enough, she bowed and greeted him in English before gesturing into the building for him to follow her.
The building was a lot more impressive on the inside than it had been on the outside. Mark wondered why they refused to create a second story for the building instead of using up this much space, but Mark figured it was something related to their culture. The elevator in the building carried Mark horizontally through the grounds, and as they got to their destination, the elevator opened to a large, high-end restaurant.
There was a chef cooking behind a grill on one side of the restaurant, and multiple dishes were arranged on a conveyor belt that moved around the chef calmly. Two waiters were standing near the conveyor belt and prepared to start serving once everyone was present. Mark turned to the only occupied seat in the large restaurant and was a little surprised to see that there was someone else there along with Genshi.
Megumi Yoshida turned to look at Mark once the elevator doors opened, and Mark couldn’t see any changes on her face, but for some reason, Mark felt like she was grinning at him. Mark put a small smile on his face in return and gave her a small nod once he got close enough to the table before he turned to look at the man of the hour. Genshi was sitting with his usual grandfatherly air about him. He had his eyes closed and his hands joined together on his lap, and it wasn’t until Mark was close enough to him that Genshi opened his eyes and called out a gruff greeting.
“Mark Vanitas, I’ve been dreading the day we would finally have this meeting for quite some time now. Your guild has been a constant thorn in my side for longer than I would’ve liked.”
Mark shrugged.
“From my perspective, I think it’s the other way around. You’ve done everything in your power to make sure my guild is subdued in your country. I’d at the very least like to know why.”
Genshi released a calm breath before he gestured to the empty seat at the table and asked Mark to please sit. Mark took a seat at the table, and not a second later, the waiters who had been standing near the conveyor belt started to bring dishes over for them. Genshi spoke up.
“Before we get into more serious matters, I’d like for you to sample our cuisine. Please, try it and tell me what you think. The chef was taught not only here in Japan but also in one of the most prestigious Western kitchens, so I am sure his cooking will be to both our tastes.”
Mark nodded in understanding, and then they all went silent as the table was filled up and they ate for a few minutes. The food was okay as far as Mark was concerned, but Mark hadn’t eaten anything that was better than Arit’s cooking yet, so he really wasn’t that impressed. But of course, Mark wouldn’t say that to them since they went out of their way to host him. Once they were done, Mark put the utensils aside and gave Genshi a small smile.
“It was very well made. Impressive.”
Genshi didn’t seem to be satisfied with Mark’s review of the meal by the way he only hummed in response, but Mark didn’t really care about the food and wasn’t going to give it any more praise than that. If Genshi didn’t like it, then that was his problem. They waited for the table to be cleared of food before Genshi finally spoke up.
“I received a message from one of your… messenger birds? It said that there was an issue with the tournament that I had to look out for. Would you care to elaborate?”
Mark leaned forward and stapled his hands on the table before speaking. Mark knew that this was the moment of truth. If Mark told Genshi about this now and Genshi refused to believe him, then Mark was going to have to do all this on his own and Japan would be caught unaware once the fighting started. But if Genshi believed him, then they could set up some countermeasures and then work forward from there to try and stop whatever was being planned.
Mark explained to Genshi what it was that Pat had seen on the screen. Mark told him about the anima that was sneaking into the cargo hold, how the other anima had hidden it with their own man, and he also told him about how the anima at the docks and the Russians had acted up at the perfect time to prevent Genshi or Megumi from knowing that there was something else going on.
As Mark spoke, Genshi’s brow furrowed more and more as he tried to comprehend all of it. Hearing that the anima were capable of thinking on this level was a completely foreign concept to him, so as far as he was concerned, Mark might as well have been speaking a foreign language.
Finally, after Mark was done talking, Megumi spoke up.
“Proof.”
That was the only word she said, but Mark understood and leaned back as he sighed. If there was one thing that Mark didn’t have, it was proof. The MDS that Pat had set up here was rudimentary at best. It didn’t have the many features that the MDS back at the guild in America had, so Pat hadn’t been able to set up the various recording features and analyzers that he would normally use. They didn’t have the recording of the anima moving to hide in the holding area, and they also didn’t have any proof that the animal that appeared at the shoreline was holding back at all.
“I have no proof beyond the words you hear from my mouth. It’s hard to believe, I know that, but I wouldn’t have come here if I wasn’t a hundred percent sure that there was some larger ploy happening behind the scenes. The anima are planning something, and they plan to execute it at the upcoming tournament. I don’t know if it involves the rest of Japan or not, but I just wanted to tell you all about this so that you would prepare yourselves for the worst-case scenario.”
The waiters that had been standing at the side brought up two trays filled with a few cups and a jar of sake, and they poured out a cup for each person before they stepped back. Genshi reached for his cup and took a sip from it before he finally spoke.
“So, what you are trying to tell me is that all you have said now has no proof other than the fact that you have said it. Is this not… what is the word that the Americans call it? Yes, speculation. Is this not just speculation on your part?”
Mark took in a breath to calm himself.
