Chapter 789: Hail Mary
The injury on her cheek had almost completely healed, but Mark could tell that she was not as strong as she had been before. This was a Hail Mary as far as Mark was concerned, some sort of last stand that she was only doing in order to try and take Mark down with her.

Mark watched as the Bishop floated into the air calmly. The Bishop didn’t seem to have any energy left and Mark prepared himself to also go all out. If this was the Bishop’s last stand, then Mark was going to have to make sure that she didn’t hurt anyone with it.

Mark looked up at the Bishop floating in the air above him and narrowed his eyes into a glare as he heard her speak up in a mellow, resigned voice.

“I’ve lived for more than a hundred years through the eyes of many of my predecessors. I fought and fought as a member of my clan. I lived, died and was reborn as an anima. I fought, not because I wanted to gain any form of recognition, but because I wanted to survive. That was the true nature of battle to me. I battle because I wish to earn the right to see the next day. I seemed to have forgotten that truth in my time, and now, thanks to you, KING, I have found it once more. I do not care for any of the rules anymore. Nothing makes me feel more alive at the moment than the thought of taking away your life. Let me show you the tenacity of the anima.”

DOON!

The superhumans that had been on the portion of the island that was lifted felt fear fill their hearts as the Bishop unleashed the full force of her mana upon the land. Mark was right about the Bishop using this as a Hail Mary. She didn’t care anymore that she was only supposed to be carrying out a mission here. She wanted to defeat Mark no matter what!

Mark narrowed his eyes as he saw the Bishop glaring him down, and then Mark moved away from the hill he had been standing on as a massive force slammed into it! Mark turned around and saw that it was a giant tree that had lifted itself away from the ground to slam into the island! The tree seemed to have a mind of its own as it followed after Mark and tried to slam into him in the new spot where he landed, but Mark easily destroyed it with a well-placed punch!

WOOSH!

Hundreds of trees raced for Mark after the first one was destroyed, and behind those trees, Mark noticed that there were figures hiding in the shadows.

‘Are those anima? No, they’re humans!’

Mark’s eyes widened when he saw one of the figures expose itself! It was a man who had a terrified look on his face as he sent a punch straight for Mark.

“I’m sorry! I can’t control it! Something is making me do it!”

The man shouted out in fear as he approached Mark, but he was shouting in a language that Mark didn’t understand, so Mark couldn’t understand it. Mark sidestepped the punch and caught the man by the shirt before tossing him away easily! The trees slammed into the area where Mark had been, and Mark jumped back to avoid them before he dashed away again as even more humans and anima joined in on the fight.

So that was what the Bishop was doing.

The Bishop’s hair had invaded the full length and breadth of the island! Every single part of the land was under her control. And it wasn’t just the land that was under her control. Somehow she had also taken control of everything that was on the island. The people, anima, and even the fucking trees were hers to command!

‘Did she use her hair to control them? Like a puppet master?’

Mark had this thought as he raced past three large trees that slammed into the ground like darts slamming into a board! Some humans were sent after Mark, and when Mark tried to jump in a certain direction, he saw many more humans being used as shields to prevent him from going there! If Mark wanted to make the jump, then he would have to go through the humans to get to the Bishop!

“Help!”

“Help me!”

“I can’t stop!”

The people who were being controlled all cried out for help from Mark, and even though Mark couldn’t understand them since they were all speaking different languages, he could still gauge the basics of what they were trying to ask for! Mark didn’t have to put too much effort into dodging and avoiding the people since most of them were weak, but the sheer number of them prevented Mark from being able to get to the Bishop without killing one or two of them. Even though Mark didn’t have much empathy for the death of others, he still wasn’t that heartless.

ROARRR!!!

‘And these fucking anima aren’t helping!’

BOOM!

Mark sent a punch straight to the head of an anima that appeared in front of him and the anima was blown into paste as it died on the spot!

“No! Please!”

“Fuck!”

Mark cursed as he heard a voice shout loudly in Chinese, and Mark had to immediately pull his hand back when he saw that he was about to punch a woman who had been following right behind the anima he just killed!

There were still hundreds of anima on the broken-off island, and although the Bishop wasn’t controlling them, they were still trying their best to kill Mark!

[Mark!]

“What is it now!? I’m fucking busy!”

Pat’s voice came through the comms and Mark shouted to tell him to just get on with it, and Pat shouted right back!

[There’s something incoming on your left! That fucking spider isn’t dead yet!]

If Mark had even a second more, then he would have released the loudest curse known to man, but it was just too bad that he didn’t have a second, because in that same moment that Pat spoke, a massive force blasted through the air and fell to the ground beside Mark!

Mark looked to his left and frowned when he saw that it was Megumi who had landed there! Megumi’s face was back to its impassive and expressionless look and she was staring into the sky with wide eyes! Mark didn’t need to be a genius to figure out that something was about to fall on them, and both Mark and Megumi immediately moved out of the way as a shadow fell from the sky above them!

BOOOM!!!

The Rook slammed its metal-spiked legs into the ground to try and skewer Mark and Megumi, but they were both gone, and the spider followed after Megumi and tried to stab her again! Megumi brought the katana forward and a loud ‘clang’ echoed through the area as she deflected the spike, and she had to bring up her mana immediately as the spider enlarged its belly and shot out thousands of tiny spikes that moved at sonic speed towards her!

Mark showed up from the side and slammed his feet into the spider’s head, sending it to the ground!
