Chapter 797: Can I Stay By Your Side?
Megumi nodded to Genshi’s words and bowed to Genshi at ninety degrees.
“I understand that, sensei. And I am sorry that it had to come to this. But I love my country, and I do not want to see us succumb to the plans of evil because of our own prejudice. If sacrificing a few lives is necessary to make sure that Mark and his people can do their jobs and save the world, then I will gladly bear the weight of that decision. You have taught me well, Sensei. Please, indulge the request of your foolish student just this one last time.”
Genshi couldn’t say anything for a good long time. Genshi’s anger slowly began to die out as he looked down at the girl whom he had taught for a long time. He watched her bow her head lower than ever before as she pleaded with him to let go of his prejudice, and he could feel a part of himself cracking. Genshi didn’t show it often, but he had a very soft spot for Megumi. To him, Megumi was like the daughter that he never had, and he loved her just as much.
Was there any chance for him to refuse such a desperate plea from his daughter?
No, there was not.
Genshi finally released a sigh as he realized that he was not going to be able to argue against Megumi’s request. When Megumi makes up her mind about something, there is nothing that can make her change her mind, so Genshi knows that if he went ahead and blocked the Vanguard guild from entering the country anymore, then Megumi would leave and abandon Japan to its fate.
Genshi fell back into his chair and joined his hands together inside the sleeves of his kimono once more before giving Megumi a nod.
“I hope in time that you do not regret the choices that you have decided to make here today. I do not agree with it, and my soul can never accept it, but if you ask me so desperately, I cannot refuse you. Very well, Megumi. This victory is yours.”
…
Mark and Megumi left Genshi’s office after Genshi gave his word that he was going to do as he said and open up the borders to allow the superhumans from the Vanguard guild into the country. Mark didn’t care if Genshi had just said all that in the heat of the moment and he changed his mind later, Mark was going to make sure that he scoured the length and breadth of Japan to get as much about the Syndicate as he could.
In Mark’s hand, there was a folder that he had gotten from Genshi after a lot more probing. In the folder were all of the information that Genshi had on the Syndicate and the theories that Genshi had about where they might be and what their next plan might be. Mark didn’t fully trust that Genshi would have anything substantial, but any form of lead was useful when dealing with an organization this elusive. Mark would send the information to Pat and see if Pat couldn’t get anything out of it.
“Were you serious about what you said?”
Mark suddenly spoke up as he and Megumi reached the large common area where most of the superhuman alliance agents were walking about. The agents were all staring at the pair of superhumans with shocked looks on their faces. Not only was it strange to see the two strongest superhumans in the world together, but the fact that Megumi was grinning like a normal person made the situation even crazier!
Whenever Mark connects his mind with Megumi’s own using the [Symbol of Gaia], it would take a short time for Megumi to lose the emotional range that she gains from the connection and revert back to her normal self. But since Mark only formed the connection a few minutes ago, Megumi still had a lot of time to express herself as freely as she wanted to.
Megumi turned to Mark with a small smile when Mark asked his question and she nodded while resting her hands in her pockets. Megumi’s stance mirrored Mark’s own, and Mark wondered if she was doing that because she wanted to make him more comfortable or if she was just copying him because she didn’t know how else to express herself due to not having emotions for so long.
Megumi spoke up in a wistful, sad tone.
“I’ve been thinking of it for a few hours now, and I think I can do a lot more for the world if I join your cause. You’re a good man and a good leader. It’s only right that I help you after knowing what it is that you’re fighting for. Besides, I don’t have much to stay in Japan for anymore. My mother and I don’t talk as much as we used to, and my brother…”
Megumi cut off her sentence after mentioning her brother, and Mark watched as the smile on her face died a brutal death, only to be replaced by a depressed look. Megumi shook her head as she tried to get the smile back, but this time, Mark saw that there was an undertone of sadness hidden behind it.
“My mother blames me for what happened to my brother. She says I wasn’t there for him when he needed me, and I can’t blame her. I can’t even imagine facing my brother’s fiancée after what happened. It might break her, so it’ll be better for everyone if I’m somewhere else. Besides, my brother would have wanted me to do what I want with my life.”
Mark nodded slowly. Mark knew that Megumi was only using this as an excuse. To Mark, Megumi sounded like she was just trying to run away from all her troubles in Japan by joining the Vanguard guild. But did Mark care about that? Not really.
Getting someone as powerful as Megumi in his guild was going to bolster their fighting power by a lot. She was one of the only people alive who could still keep up with him in a fight against more powerful opponents. If they were going to be meeting even stronger opponents later on in this fight, then he needed her to be there with him.
Megumi suddenly spoke up again, but this time, she seemed hesitant to ask for what she wanted. She scratched her cheek and turned to the side for a few seconds before laughing at herself and turning back to Mark with slightly reddened cheeks.
“Haha… I haven’t blushed like this in years. Uhm, I wanted to ask you something. If… if I join your guild and everything, do you mind if I stay by your side?”
“What the fuck did you say?”
A voice spoke up from behind Mark, and the entire Superhuman Alliance reception area seemed to drop by at least ten degrees from the sheer chill present in that voice. Mark immediately recognized it, and he turned around to see Arit and Luna standing there.
Arit and Luna had been on their way to pick up Mark when they noticed Mark’s intense aura from all the way on the other side of the city. They hurried here as quickly as possible in case there was an issue. But once they got here, the first thing they saw was their boyfriend being wooed by some other woman.
Arit looked like she wanted to kill something!
