Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 799
Chapter 799: Research Data
Once they were done with that, Mark told Arit and Luna that they had to go and see Pat. The book that Mark got from Genshi was something that Mark needed Pat to begin looking at immediately, and even though they had to get back to America soon, Mark wasn’t going to waste any time.
The two girls nodded, and Arit told Mark that she was going to head back to the hospital. Jeanne was taking care of the injured superhumans who needed treatment, and Arit wanted to go and see if she needed any help. Mark gave Arit a kiss and saw her off before he and Luna headed toward the hotel where Pat was staying. Megumi told them that she had to go and see how things were going in other parts of the country, so she was going for a meeting with her secretary. Mark gave Megumi another hit from the [Symbol of Gaia] to help her reset her emotions before he left.
Luna frowned when she saw how close Mark and Megumi’s faces were during their conversation, and Luna realized that it was Megumi who was leaning too close to Mark. Luna was a bit conflicted about allowing Megumi to be this close to Mark because, even though she was Mark’s girlfriend now, she also knew that it was exactly how she had brought herself into her relationship with Mark when Mark was dating only Arit. Did Luna have any right to reprimand Megumi for doing the exact same thing that she did?
Yes, Luna realized that she did.
Regardless of how the relationship was formed, Luna was still Mark’s girlfriend, and Luna wasn’t comfortable with just any woman getting so close to her man.
Luna asked Megumi if it was necessary for her to lean in so close, and Megumi blinked in surprise and apologized! She didn’t even know that she had been leaning in at all! Megumi didn’t need to lean in, and she was only leaning in like that because of how intense the emotional impact was on her.
When they were done with the connection, Luna linked her arm to Mark’s elbow and practically dragged him away from Megumi so that they could get going to where Pat was. Mark was able to immediately recognize that Luna was jealous of seeing him with another woman, and Mark was a little surprised because this would be the first time that Luna was showing any form of vulnerability in front of anyone. Normally, Arit was the one who was jealous, and Luna tried her best to calm Arit down from doing anything to the woman. It was a nice difference and Mark made sure to reassure her on the car ride that there was really nothing at all happening between him and Megumi.
“We just connected because of how we fought together. I’m sure things will settle down in a few days.”
Luna blushed when she realized that Mark noticed the way she had been behaving, and she just nodded while trying to hide her face from him so he wouldn’t see how embarrassed she was.
The two of them headed to the lodge where Pat was staying, and they opened the lodge door to see Pat with two laptops in front of him and a large portable screen in the middle. Pat was working on triangulating the location of the anima that had been on the island and where they were running off to now that the contest was done. Many of the anima ran away from the island once they noticed that the Bishop was dead, and one of those anima was the Rook Spider that Mark thought he had killed.
Apparently, when they went back to look for the body of the ROOK, it had vanished, so Mark knew that it must be trying to heal itself somewhere far away.
“Any luck?”
Mark asked this question as he walked into the room, and Pat just shook his head to say that there had been nothing yet. Pat was able to locate various Eldritch animals and anima-human hybrids that ran away from the site, but he hadn’t found a whiff of the Rook. One possible reason for this was that the Rook’s mana was so depleted that it wasn’t registering on the MDS as well as it should be. Something as powerful as the Rook would normally leak a ton of mana and register on the MDS as a very bright red light, but after taking a beating from both Mark and Megumi, the Rook was probably on its last legs, so its mana wouldn’t even register as a high-level Eldritch.
Mark hummed at Pat’s explanation before he brought the notebook forward and dropped it on the table in front of Pat. Pat stopped what he had been doing and looked down at the worn book curiously before he slowly picked it up while asking what the hell it was.
“Are you planning to become a novelist or something?”
“Don’t be an ass. That’s from Genshi. I went to talk to him earlier because I didn’t like how things went in this tournament. There were too many holes for the anima to make their way in, and I knew that someone in Japan had to be a part of the whole thing. I found out the president of the country was in on it. I would’ve known earlier if he was superhuman, but I didn’t think that even regular humans were also part of this. That book right there is everything Genshi had been able to gather about the syndicate. They’ve been around for a very long time, so most of it is old data, but I figured that if anyone could make something out of this it’d be you.”
Pat sobered up the moment Mark said that this book was on the syndicate, and he quickly started flipping through the pages to see if there was anything substantial inside. The inside of the book was mainly random dribbles, notes, drawings, and numbers written by hand. There was nearly no meaning to all of them, the writings were all Japanese kanji and the datings were so old that Pat couldn’t help but frown.
Mark noticed the frown on Pat’s face and asked a question.
“Is it that bad?”
Pat shook his head and said that he didn’t know yet.
“I’ll have to look into it properly and see if I can’t figure out what the hell is going on here. When are we heading back to America?”
Mark said that they would head back in about two days, and Pat nodded and turned back to his laptop as he said that he would see what he could do by then.
“How about Russia? Did you send the information to Grace?”
Mark told Pat to look into Russia once the tournament was over, and Pat had told him that he would send all the information they had to Grace and have her do it. Even though Pat didn’t trust anyone to do a job as thoroughly as he could, Pat had gained a lot of respect for Grace over the past few months and he knew that if he was going to trust anyone else to do a reasonable job of looking into the country, then it was her.
