Chapter 801: The Russians and The Syndicate
The government thought that this would be enough to end the anima and put things back the way they should be, but when the superhumans were found dead only a day afterward, the government began to realize that they weren’t just dealing with a regular Disaster-class anima anymore. This was a dangerous anima that was intelligent enough to not be found easily while also being strong enough to deal with multiple strong opponents at the same time.
The government created a strong task force of S ranks that they sent to the outskirts. This time, they didn’t pull any stops, and they put one of their strongest superhumans, one of the female warriors from the Rustav family, as the head of the expedition. She was already very close to becoming an undefined superhuman, so they knew that no matter how powerful this monster was, it would not be able to win against her.
But they had underestimated the beast once more. This time, the fight that ensued wasn’t even worth being called a fight. The beast destroyed more than a third of the eastern peninsula with a blast of mana that was so fierce it tore the body of the Rustav warrior in half.
The president of the country became aware of the situation, and as they began to try to come up with a new countermeasure that would deal with the monster, they were shocked when more anima began to appear from the sea. The anima were all weaker ones that didn’t pose much of a threat at first, but before long, stronger ones also began to show themselves, and they all gravitated toward the beast and began to refer to him as their King.
There was tension growing in the country as they tried to deal with the situation without involving any other country. That was how they had always dealt with things, and their president was headstrong and proud, so he refused to believe that they couldn’t handle a few anima without asking for help from foreigners.
Finally, a saving grace appeared in the form of a random stranger. This person was also Russian, but he was not one of the president’s aides, and he didn’t have any form of political power in the government. Instead, he was just a regular citizen who possessed superhuman abilities. The man introduced himself as Yusev and asked for an audience with the president, claiming that he had a solution to the problem of the beast that would be beneficial to all the people involved.
The president was skeptical, but since there were no other options available to them, the president decided that this was probably their best shot at getting rid of the monster. He was desperate enough to listen to the words of some random man who showed up out of nowhere.
The man told the president that he belonged to an ancient and powerful group known as the Syndicate and that the monster they had found in the country was no ordinary anima. He was the King of all the anima.
“The King is not looking for a battle with you. He is a benevolent creature, and he only asks for one thing. Your understanding. The King has found this country worthy of his presence, and he wishes to give you a chance for collaboration. We, the Syndicate, will act as the mediators between the King and you. If you allow the King to stay in your land and start his crusade from here, then he will not bring harm to any more of your people.”
The president was obviously shocked by the request, and the fact that it was a human, not an anima, who was bringing it to him was even more surprising. The Russian president never knew that there were people in his own country who were on the side of the anima. This Syndicate was something that he had never even heard about before, so he knew that they were either a new group that had formed very recently or a very old group that was so deeply rooted in the country that they were able to hide their influence effortlessly.
The president would have simply refused the request from Yusev and executed him on the spot for daring to bring something like this in front of him if not for the fact that even within the most trusted members of the president’s circle, there were people who were actually on Yusev’s side.
“It sounds like a good idea. Things aren’t looking good for us now that we’ve lost so many people.”
“Instead of fighting, why don’t we just join forces with the Syndicate? They look like they have a firm grip on the anima, so it would be beneficial.”
“Even if other countries are attacked, it shouldn’t matter as long as we remain standing. In fact, won’t this just help us out in the long run?”
“I also support them. This ideology of bringing the world together under one banner is a sensible one.”
The persistent remarks from those around him confused the president at first. The president had known most of these people all his life, so he trusted their judgment. Their advocating for the Syndicate in this manner seemed strange to him, but there was no denying that they all believed in what the Syndicate was trying to sell to the president. They believed that the way forward was to join hands with the anima and bring about a new age for humanity.
The president would have never guessed that these people whom he had known his whole life were also members of the Syndicate who had chosen the side of the anima long ago. As time went on, the president’s doubts were slowly being toppled one after another, and it wasn’t long before even the president himself began to think that maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to side with the Syndicate.
After a long period of arguments and negotiations, the president finally relented to the words of his cabinet. He gave the Syndicate leeway to use the facilities in Russia, and in exchange for this, the Syndicate would pay a large sum of money to the Russian government and promise that they would protect the people of Russia in the case of any anima invasions.
The period after the agreement turned out to be one of the most peaceful periods that Russia had ever seen. Not only were there no anima invasions, but all anima had taken residence in an unpopulated part of the country, leaving the citizens alone without any form of fuss.
The attacks from the anima King dropped in frequency, and the Russian president couldn’t help but admit that choosing to side with the Syndicate had been the right choice. Over the next few months, the Syndicate properly integrated themselves into Russian society. They set up labs and training grounds where they were able to carry out their experiments without any disturbances from the government, and in exchange, the Russians were given hundreds of billions of dollars as payment.
The Syndicate had been around for years before the start of the First World War, so there were people here who had made and inherited so much money that they would never be able to spend it even in a hundred lifetimes. They had more than enough money to spend on anything.
But all of that was about to come to a stop.
