Chapter 821: Don’t Do What I Did
Jeanne nodded along as she understood what Arit was getting at. Less than two days ago, they were just trying to finish a tournament, and now they were fighting for the fate of their entire world. Of course, it was too much. But that was no reason for Arit to be afraid.
“You know, when the anima first appeared, it was in America. The Armageddon attack killed a lot of people in the country, including my and Pat’s parents. The first thing I thought about when I heard what happened was Pat. He was just a kid back then, a fourteen-year-old who didn’t know anything about the world, and I was afraid for him. I was terrified of what might have happened to him. Then when I came back and saw what sort of effect the attack had on him, I almost broke down. He was a hollow shell. Completely empty of any emotion.
“I allowed my fear of what was wrong with him to fill me, and I became overbearing. I tried my best to make sure I was there for him at every turn. I tried to give him everything that I could as quickly as possible. But that was wrong. It was wrong for me to project my own desires and fears onto him, making it seem like I was trying to atone for my sin of not being there by babying him and pushing him to love me and open up to me. It was hell for him, and I never even knew I was the cause of it. Can you believe that it was actually Mark that made me realize what I was doing?”
Arit turned to Jeanne in surprise when she heard this. Mark made her change her mind? Arit thought that Jeanne hadn’t met Mark until that time they all met up in the Red Lotus Hotel.
Arit said this to Jeanne, and Jeanne nodded.
“Yeah, I didn’t meet him till then, but that doesn’t mean I hadn’t heard of him. Pat spoke about him to me, about how he had a friend who was suicidal and also the strongest person he had ever seen. Pat gravitated towards Mark because of who Mark was. Mark didn’t try to baby Pat, and he didn’t care that Pat had gone through trauma that a child should never have to go through. If Pat wanted to talk to him, then Mark was there, but if Pat didn’t want to, then Mark was also okay with that. I realized this a little too late, and by the time I did, I had already lost my place as the one Pat wanted to confide in. Pat began to heal at his own pace and with his own friends. He didn’t need me there to take care of him anymore. I’m sure you’re asking yourself, why am I telling you all this? Well, it’s simple…”
Jeanne walked forward and tapped Arit on the forehead with two fingers. Arit had to look up at the taller woman as Jeanne smiled down at her apprentice.
“You’re slowly moving in the same direction that I moved in. Your worry and desperation are going to make it too suffocating for both yourself and Mark in the long run. Especially if things don’t go exactly as you hope they would. Relax a little, Arit, and allow things to take their course. Mark has done everything he should do, and now he is fighting for the world. Pray for him, wish him well, and be there for him. Don’t smother him, do you understand?”
Jeanne watched Arit’s face as it morphed into a look of confusion for a moment, but it didn’t last long before Arit slowly gained realization on her face and sighed as she slowly nodded.
Arit was still worried about what would happen with Mark, but Jeanne’s words gave her a new outlook on things. She was not going to make the same mistake that Jeanne made. She would look at things positively and hope that Mark comes back, and when Mark does come back, she would be there for him and care for him.
If Mark was hurt, she would work hard to be the one he confides in, and if he died…
Ba-Dump!
A feeling like a knife stabbing into Arit’s heart sent a shock through her entire body once that thought passed through her mind, and Arit put her hand to her chest and closed her eyes in pain!
Arit had to take deep breaths to get herself back under control, and she waited a few seconds before she was able to open her eyes again.
‘I hope Mark is okay.’
Arit had this thought as she looked up into the sky again. Jeanne had been watching Arit in worry when she saw Arit suddenly grab her chest. Jeanne knew that it couldn’t be any medical condition since Arit was a superhuman, so it had to be something mental or physiological that was affecting Arit. But thankfully, Arit didn’t stay in pain for long before she calmed herself.
Arit looked down at the chocolate in her hand and ate it all at once to gain back some of her lost energy before she turned to Jeanne.
“Are you ready to go to another country?”
Jeanne nodded to Arit’s words.
“Yeah, I think I’ve done all I can here. There are some other healers around, and they should be able to handle the rest of the injured even without my help. Give me a few minutes to finish packing, and we can head to the airport. Are you okay?”
Jeanne raised a brow in worry as she looked Arit from head to toe. Jeanne was a bit worried that Arit was just putting up a front to try and be strong, so she had to make sure that Arit was actually okay and that she had taken Jeanne’s words to heart.
Arit nodded seriously and smiled.
“Yes. I’m fine.”
…
[The Airspace above Germany]
“ETA is in one minute! You have to go now! There are anima everywhere!”
The jet carrying Mark was already flying over the airspace close to the German airport. The pilot had initially intended to land the airplane and then head off once Mark was on the ground, but after looking through the MDS installed in the jet and seeing the sheer number of anima flying across the air, the pilot realized that landing the airplane would be the end of him! In fact, just getting anywhere near the airport would be the end of him! Mark had to jump out of the jet a good kilometer away from where the jet was supposed to land, and the pilot would immediately swerve away from the country to head back to Japan!
Mark understood that the pilot was afraid for his own life, so Mark didn’t hold it against him that he didn’t want to go all the way. The back of the airplane was already open, and Mark walked over to it and saw that there were hundreds of anima flying past and around the plane.
No wonder the pilot was sounding terrified.
Mark wasted no time as he jumped out of the plane and began to freefall to the ground without bothering to use a parachute. The anima in the air all followed after Mark as Mark activated his [Taunting] skill to give the pilot a chance to leave quickly, and the pilot wasted no time as he turned the jet around and bolted away from the German airspace!
