Chapter 631: A Powerful Existence
The wind howled as Nox stood in the middle of the ruined street. The frozen remains of the two demons cracked quietly beneath his boots as he turned toward the Royal Island’s bridge in the distance.
But Drake’s voice had changed everything.
“They hold valuable information.”
That meant only one thing—this wasn’t just any survivor. It was someone with connections, someone who had seen things. Maybe even someone who had survived the initial demon takeover.
‘Where are you?’ Nox asked as he turned away from the bridge’s direction. Without waiting to hear Drake’s reply, he activated Divine Velocity, disappearing in a burst of golden streaks.
Moments after he left, two more demons stumbled upon the scene. They immediately grew alert.
“Do you sense any presence nearby?” the first demon asked, scanning the surroundings with wary eyes.
“I can’t… but I can feel they’re close by,” the other replied. “Why don’t you report to a higher demon? I’ll keep lookout!”
At the same time, Nox moved through the streets near the royal castles, his form flickering past patrolling demons marching along the road. Aside from a gust of breeze and a flash of golden light, they didn’t sense a single thing.
After running for a while, he finally arrived at a half-destroyed cathedral, once a place of worship for the Vermilion Kingdom’s citizens.
He pushed through the door and stepped inside. After several turns, he arrived at the door of a room. Within it, he sensed three presences.
As he stepped through, he ignored Valkor, who was leaning by the window, and Drake, heading straight toward the survivor.
It was a teenage girl, about Nox’s age. She appeared malnourished, as if she hadn’t eaten a proper meal in days. He heard her stomach rumble, and a glint of compassion shone in his eyes.
Without hesitation, he retrieved some sausages and bread from his inventory.
As soon as she saw the food, her eyes lit up. She couldn’t help but part her lips and say weakly, “Mister, please… can I have some?”
“No, you won’t have some,” Nox said, smiling kindly. “You’ll have all you want until you’re full.”
Two streaks of tears ran down the girl’s cheeks when she heard his words. Though he didn’t know it, after her parents died, she had been surviving on scraps and rodents left behind in the church.
She hadn’t dared step outside the cathedral, too afraid of the demons roaming the streets. She had nearly given up hope—until now.
“Stop crying,” Nox said as he gently stroked her head. “You’ll be fine from now on.”
She sniffed a couple of times and dug into the food. After eating her fill and quenching her thirst with water, she began to explain what had happened.
She sniffled again and wiped her mouth with the sleeve of her ragged robe.
Her hands trembled—not from the cold, but from memory.
“I was at the cathedral that morning,” she began slowly. “It was supposed to be a special prayer… for peace. The high priests said they felt unrest stirring in the east, and so… the king ordered a mass prayer. Hundreds of us gathered.”
Her small voice echoed faintly against the ruined cathedral walls, where stained glass windows had long since shattered.
Nox listened quietly. He didn’t interrupt.
Valkor’s eyes narrowed slightly. Drake folded his arms and leaned in closer.
The girl continued.
“There was singing. Chanting. Everything was… peaceful. Until suddenly—” she shuddered—”a small crack opened in the sky.”
She raised her arm and gestured upward, trembling.
“A faint… purple portal. No one noticed at first. But then, it opened wider. And before we could even scream, they came through.”

She covered her face. “Demons… hundreds of them… crawling through like ants out of a nest. Wings, horns, claws. They were roaring, shrieking, flying around.”
“The guards?” Nox asked softly.
“Slaughtered. So fast I couldn’t even understand what was happening. Some tried to fight back—but they were overwhelmed.”
“And… who was leading them?” Nox asked gruffly. This was perhaps the most important detail for him.
The girl hesitated, then lowered her hands and looked directly at him.
“There was… a woman.”
Nox blinked.
“She was human,” the girl whispered, “or at least looked like one. Her hair was raven-colored. Her body glowed… and her eyes—they were blood red. She walked calmly through the portal while all the others rampaged.”
A woman? From her description, Nox—though he knew little about demons—could easily tell she was a higher demon. Someone like Amos.
“And what did she do?” he asked.
The girl’s face twisted into something between awe and horror.
“She raised one finger… and the entire front row of the kingdom’s Expert-ranked Awakened—just… exploded.”
“Exploded?” Nox repeated.
“She didn’t even move. Just pointed. Their bodies popped like water balloons. Blood splattered everywhere. It was like she was playing with toys… ripping off their limbs for fun.”
A shiver ran through the room. Nox felt his blood run cold.
An Expert was a Level 100 Awakened! How could a single being slaughter dozens without even moving?
The girl continued. “She looked so calm. Even as the screaming started. She walked through the holy cathedral like it was her garden. Everyone who rushed at her died. Even the Royal Knights… the Cathedral Paladins… she wiped them out like they were insects.”
She sniffed. “She said something while standing in the middle of the city. I remember it clearly.”
She took a breath.
‘The flame of Vermilion has flickered too long. It’s time we turned the lights off.’
Silence.
For a long moment, no one spoke.
Nox’s expression turned unreadable.
That phrase… it wasn’t something a demon would say. It was poetic, cruel, and deliberate.
And most of all—it was personal.
“She didn’t look like a demon,” the girl whispered. “But the others obeyed her like she was a queen.”
“Definitely not the Vom demon,” Nox muttered under his breath.
He recalled what the two demons had said. General Vom, a Rank 95 demon, was commanding the bridge.
But what this girl described?
That wasn’t a general.
That was something worse.
