Chapter 255: Sooner or later
[Ding! An assassination attempt has been detected! The task of the System “Eliminate all those involved in the assassination attempt! There are 13 goals in total!”]
“An assassination mission?” thought Idan in surprise. For the first time, System instructed him to kill a person, and from their own world, and not from another.
“Come to think of it, I’ve never killed people before, have I?” wondered Idan. “Although, if I take into account the ascension trial, then I’ve already killed, but if I don’t take that into account, then no.”
“It feels weird, — Idan muttered.
In Limbo, Idan and Arabel killed nothing but beasts. Not to mention humans or members of other races.
Yes, they fought against their doppelgangers and even defeated them several times. But, as it turned out later, they never killed them. In the Forest of Doppelgangers, the “Perfect Doppelgangers” were almost immortal under Geminia. For example, there was Ned, whom Idan considered killed, but later he became his first contracted being.
[Reward for the kill mission (1 target):
_Mortal – 1 System point
_Bronze rank – 10 System points
_Silver rank – 50 System points
_Golden rank – 100 System points
_Platinum rank – 250 System points
_Diamond Rank – 750 System points]
[The number of System Points will be tripled for the successful completion of the first kill task]
“12 mortals and one Gold Rank Awakened. This gives us 112 System points, and if multiplied by three, it’s already 336. Not bad. It’s pretty good.”
Then Idan froze in surprise.
Under the influence of System, he has already begun to evaluate other people’s lives using System points. An ordinary person’s life was only worth a measly 1 System Point, while a gold-ranked awakened one was valued at 100 points.
Idan realized that his former values, which he had before the disaster and his awakening, began to change under the influence of System and, as he realized, would continue to change. It was inevitable, and he and Arabel needed to adapt to these changes and keep up with them if they were to survive. Instead of resisting and defending the outdated views of the old world, they should accept the new reality and change with it.
“Sooner or later, I will have to stain my hands with the blood, so stop doubting, Idan. You’ve already given them a chance,” Idan muttered, finally making up his mind.
“Ned, — he called, and Ned, who was still holding back his anger, looked at his master.
“All those twelve weaklings are yours. But Kraus, the awakened one of the Golden rank, is mine.”
A big smile appeared on Ned’s face. Finally, his master had made a decision.
“Yes, young master,” Ned said excitedly, ready to give chase at once.
“Wait a minute, Ned. Before you go, change your appearance to another, new one, don’t let this image of yourself show.”
“Yes, young master.”
“And make sure that all these people die at the hands of the beast, and not from man.”
“Yes, young master.”
“You know, Ned, I asked you to start talking instead of repeating the same sentence every time,” Idan said, a little annoyed by Ned’s monotonous response.
“Yes, young master.”
Idan’s right eye twitched nervously with annoyance, and he barely restrained the urge to hit Ned.

“Damn it! Get out of here!” — He said through his teeth.
“Yes, young master,” — Ned replied, and wasted no time in chasing after his victims, changing shape as he went.
Ned quickly disappeared, turning into a beast that could easily move through the snow. Although the city was visible in the distance, it would still take some time for ordinary people to reach it. The question was whether Ned would be able to intercept these people in time.
Idan noticed in the photos that Coco took that they were traveling on snowmobiles, although Idan had not seen snowmobiles in the vicinity before.
Idan wasn’t worried about Ned’s safety.
“If it wasn’t for the limitations of this world, Ned would have already assumed the form of some Diamond-ranked creature he had. Only the presence of these limitations holds him back. And even with these restrictions, Ned should be considered one of the strongest Gold—ranked creatures in our world,” Idan said, looking in the direction where Ned had disappeared.
“And you, girl? What are you going to do?” Idan asked Coco, who was sitting on his shoulder. Coco looked at the two foxes, who were still trembling and afraid to raise their heads even after Ned left, just like the snow wolf.
“Woo-woo-woo, — Coco said, pointing her little paw at the foxes.
“Okay, stay for now and catch up with me later,” Idan told Coco, and she nodded and jumped off.
After taking a look at the fox and the wolf, Idan slowly headed towards the city, leaving Coco behind. Unlike Ned, he was in no rush to kill Kraus.
As he understood it, once the System has given them the task of killing, then Karma no longer protects them. This was an unexpected discovery for Idan.
“Is it worth believing information from the web about Karma?” he thought to himself.
Even then, after reading it, Idan found the whole Karma system strange. He realized that he himself needed to understand from his own experience exactly how this Karma works.
“I think I need to understand from my own experience exactly how this karma works,” Idan decided, heading into the city.

“Damn it!” one of the men exclaimed.
“How could you miss?!” another asked, addressing a sniper from their group.
“How should I know? I aimed right at his head, but he easily dodged,” the sniper defended himself.
After his unsuccessful shot, he quickly hid and retreated.
They were all confident that they could kill one of these two awakened ones. This confidence was reinforced by the fact that they had successfully eliminated an awakened one in this way once before. However, they were unlucky this time.
“Stop swearing,” Kraus intervened. “Quickly pack your things and leave.”
Although the assassination plan had failed, Kraus wasn’t too worried. For some reason, he was sure that the two men would not pursue them, especially since the city was not far away.
Even if they did come, Kraus was confident that he could handle one of them, and the others would be able to hold off the other to some extent with rifles. Kraus knew that rifles were still effective even against Golden-rank awakened ones.
After packing their things, the people who were a little disappointed that they couldn’t punish those two awakened ones, but believed that they had at least brought fear to them, started seven snowmobiles and set off at full speed towards the city.
Kraus, the only one on his snowmobile, took the lead. The others rode in pairs, forming a column that followed Kraus.
When the column led by Kraus had covered half the way to the city, they heard the sound of a blow and the screams of two men coming from the end of the column.
Everyone who rode in front turned around and saw a strange black beast that they had never seen before, resembling a wolf but with long sharp spikes on its back, ramming into a snowmobile and impaling two passengers with its spikes. The impact caused the snowmobile to fly off and break into small pieces, and the victims, having received numerous fatal wounds, died, uttering only a short scream at the very beginning.
The sight took everyone’s breath away in horror. Even Kraus, the awakened Golden Rank, felt fear when he met this beast.
Kraus was able to sense its power and determined that it was a peak Golden-ranked beast.
If Idan and Arabel had been here, they would have immediately recognized the beast that Ned had turned into. It was a Golden-ranked Spiked Wolf that lived in the Doppelganger Forest.
