Chapter 20: Personal assistant…
Ramsey
Since it was morning, I had just enough time to shower and change my clothes before heading to the patrol stations to get reports and plan the rest of the day.
While I was still there, a mind link came from my grandfather. Two mind links in less than 24 hours? That was new.
“Ramsey?” his voice echoed in my mind. “Why aren’t you in the office yet?”
“I’m on patrol, Grandpa!” I replied tersely.
“Well, leave whatever you’re doing and come right away. I’m waiting for you in my office.”
“Can’t it wait? I was just about to brief the soldiers?” I said.
“Drop everything, Ramsey, and come now!” he growled, his annoyance seeping into the link before ending it.
I sighed, running a hand through my hair. Every part of my body screamed with fatigue.
I gave the warriors instructions before heading back to the Central Pack Building where his office was. I paused at the door, wondering why he needed to see me so urgently.
Whatever he wanted, it couldn’t be good.
The moment I entered his office, I knew I was right. He wore a deep frown on his face. He didn’t even allow me to close the door before he tossed a handful of newspapers on his desk at me.
“Explain this,” he growled.
I recoiled in shock. The last time my grandfather was this angry with me was six years ago when I called off my engagement with Cassidy without informing him, but even then, he hadn’t been this angry.
His eyes were burning with fury as he stared at me.
Slowly, I bent down and picked up the newspaper on the floor and my heart sank when I saw the headlines and the picture splashed on the front page. It was a picture of me and Lyla at the gala with a bold headline that read:
‘Lycan Leader and the Deviant: A Scandalous Night’
My jaw clenched as I glanced over at the photos taken at different angles. I hadn’t realized how close we had seemed that night. With the way we were staring at each other, anyone could see the desire in our eyes.
“I thought I made myself clear about keeping a clean profile, Ramsey,” my grandfather bellowed. “Now every newspaper in the region has splashed your face across its pages, and guess what they’re saying.”
“Grandpa, I…”
“A deviant? Ramsey? I heard she’s a deviant—of all women you could have chosen; to dance with, to hold, to look like you wanted to be with… of all women, you choose a shameless deviant? What is wrong with you? I’ve dedicated my whole life trying to raise you the best way I can, gave you everything you needed, prepared you for the throne and this is how you choose to repay me? To repay our family?”
“Grandpa, if you’d just allow me…”
“What is more…” he cut me off “I heard rumours, that she’s in the pack—that she stayed right in the pack house. You dared to bring that unclean thing right here?” Into our home?”
“It wasn’t like that, Grandpa. I’m sorry that you found out about it in the newspaper, but they’re twisting things. Her injuries were severe, and she almost died, so I…”
“I don’t want to hear it,” he cut me off with a sharp wave of his hand. “You’ve embarrassed me—the entire pack is talking. In case you haven’t noticed, you’re the Lycan Leader. It means you cannot do whatever you please. You’re a checkmate to the people… you must do every. Single. Damn. Thing. Right. So, you will fix this, and fast.”
My chest tightened with frustration as I stared at him. “And how do you expect me to fix it?”
“You must announce your engagement to Cassidy immediately. I’ll have our PR team put out a notice that she meant nothing and was trying to seduce you. You must agree in case anyone asks you. Alright?” he said, turning away from me to face the window.
“That picture is false. She fell at the gala and I was just helping her up. If I agree to this PR stunt, she’d be under public scrutiny. I’ll just tell the truth instead.”
“You’re a fool, Ramsey Kincaid!” My grandfather spun so fast that I thought he was going to fall. “Do you even know what you’re saying? She is a DEVIANT!!! You shouldn’t be an inch close to her, to begin with. Is it that hard for you to understand? You cannot be close to anything that stains or ruins your image.”

“But it’s not her fault that she turned out that way!” I yelled, my heart aching with pain. “It’s the Moon Goddess’s fault and not hers. Why should she suffer for it?”
My grandfather’s eyes narrowed with suspicion as he came closer to me. “Why are you defending her? Hurry and tell me what happened that night and why she was here in the pack house… tell me!”
Before I could respond, there was a knock on the door before it was pushed open and Cassidy stepped into the office, her dark hair shining in the morning light. I wanted to turn and leave, but my grandfather’s grip on my shoulder held me in place.
“Ah, Cassidy,” he said, his face shifting into a bright smile. “Perfect timing. Ramsey And I were just talking about you.”
“Really?” her gaze flitted from me to my grandfather. “I came because I saw the morning papers. Are you alright, Ramsey?” she gave me a piteous glance. “You should have avoided her that day,” she sighed and turned to my grandfather, placing her hands tenderly on his arm.
“Pop-pop, please don’t take it out on Ramsey. You know he’s such a gentleman. If anything, that girl took advantage of his kindness. He didn’t hit on her or anything. I was there.”
“Then you’re not angry with Ramsey?” my grandfather asked.
“There’s no reason to be!” she laughed. “It’s not his fault.”
“Great!” he nodded. “You know, before you came, we had a wonderful idea. Ramsey has had a lot of workloads lately and needs a personal assistant, plus didn’t you mention needing a place to intern to add up for your business diploma?”
“Yes!” she nodded. “But I have gotten no place, though. I’m still applying and hoping.”
“How about becoming Ramsey’s personal assistant? It’s going to be stressful, but working together would be an excellent opportunity for both of you to get to know each other better, don’t you think?”
“That’s a wonderful idea, Pop-pop,” she gushed, turning to me. “Don’t you think so, Ramsey?”
My brow furrowed. “I don’t need a Personal Assistant, Grandpa. I already have a secretary and lots of staff.”
“This is different, Ramsey. To unlock the full potential of the White Moon throne, you need to learn how to work as a team, and this is a perfect arrangement.”
“I’m sure it’ll come naturally to us, Grandpa. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of my work, thanks. She should find someone else to assist.”
“Ramsey,” my grandfather cupped my face. “This is not up for debate. Eventually, Cassidy would be a part of the Throne’s leadership, whether you like it or not. You have responsibilities to fulfill and this is one of them. You will work with her.”
My hand clenched into fists at my sides, but I kept my voice steady. “My responsibilities are to this pack, not to some arrangement you made without my consent.”
My grandfather’s eyes flashed with anger, but before he could retort, Cassidy said with a cool, sweet voice.
“Pop-pop, why don’t I talk to Ramsey—make him see reasons? I’m sure he would listen to me; you don’t have to bother yourself anymore.”
My grandfather glared at me one last time before he cleared his throat and walked out. As soon as we were alone, I turned to face her.
“Cut the pretense. I will not accept you working with me.”
“Well,” she scoffed, “Watch this first,” she added, thrusting her phone in my face.
I froze when the video on the screen started.
