Chapter 44: How long
“My boy, what would you like for your birthday?”
Over twenty years ago, Rebecca asked her eldest son Adrian.
That year, his younger brother Ethan had just learned to speak.
“Nothing special,” young Adrian shook his head, looking at his mother.
In his memory, under the soft living room lights, his mother cradled his giggling baby brother in her arms. She bent down gently and said, “Then let Ethan decide. Ethan, whatever you say, that’s what we’ll buy for your brother, okay?”
Adrian looked at Ethan, whose eyes sparkled like they were filled with stars.
He couldn’t remember what his brother had asked for, but Adrian knew that from that day forward, every single birthday, every year, he received exactly the same gifts as Ethan.
Even though their birthdays were two months apart – one in deep winter, the other in early spring.
Rebecca always prided herself on being a fair mother who treated both sons equally. Whenever she saw something interesting, she would think, “Ah, Ethan would like this,” and promptly buy two of the same thing.
After all, hadn’t her eldest son already said he “didn’t particularly like anything special”?
Adrian’s room gradually became a mirror image of his brother’s, like a perfect copy. The same fountain pens on the desk, identical series of art books on the shelves, drawers filled with the same brand of candy, and even their school bags were the same style in different colors… Ethan was so good at expressing himself, and Mom loved him so much. So whenever he asked for something, Adrian would receive one too.
Years later, on one birthday at midnight, the grown-up boy packed up everything in his room one by one and threw it all in the trash. After that, he never spent another birthday at home.
He hated this feeling – the feeling that unless he spoke up, no one would ever know.
Just like Christine’s gift – unless he told her, she would never know how much he hated that aromatherapy sachet.
All day long, through multiple video conferences in office, every time he opened his drawer, that purple pouch just lay there, so offensive it made anger flare up inside him.
Christine shouldn’t have given him such gifts at all – not last year’s signed pen, and certainly not this year’s aromatherapy sachet.
The driver sped through the night, rushing Adrian from home to the Core Club. James and Daniel were already waiting in the parking lot, standing between light and shadow, checking their watches – five minutes until the meeting.
The sight of the approaching Maybach finally made James breathe a sigh of relief. In business matters, Adrian had always been a boss who valued punctuality to an extreme, and utterly despised partners who couldn’t respect time. That’s exactly why alarm bells were ringing in Jame’s mind — starting this month, from the Tokyo meeting to today’s appointment… his usually perfectly-prepared boss had almost been late. Twice.
Adrian stepped out of the car. Daniel stood ready with a freshly pressed suit in a garment bag. James stepped forward, noticing a new gift box in Adrian’s hand and instinctively reached for it, but Adrian’s cold voice stopped him: “Call Dr. Wong at the clinic.”
Without hesitation, James pulled out his phone, found the gynecologist’s number, and carefully asked, “What should I ask him?”
Adrian narrowed his eyes, pausing for a second before saying slowly: “How long it takes to… do.”
He then opened the elegant leather box, took out a pair of cufflinks, and tossed them to Daniel. “Clean these. Put on my desk tomorrow.”
Huh?
Daniel was still processing the shock from Adrian’s previous words. But years of working for Adrian had taught him to maintain his composure. He caught the cufflinks and promptly replied,”Yes, of course.”
With his rich experience in the battlefield of boy-girl relationships, Daniel had already vaguely figured out what was going on. He shot James a sympathetic look.
James, however, was completely lost:
Do what? Who Do? Do what with whom? The sentence wasn’t even grammatically complete, with no subject, predicate or object.
But he knew better than to ask Adrian such foolish questions. He calmly dialed the number, suppressing his confusion, and said, “Hello, Dr. Wong. The boss wants to know… how long it takes to… do?”
The doctor was silent for three seconds. James thought he heard a faint sigh.

“…Usually, after three months. Any sooner would risk the fetus’s health.”
Finally, James understood everything – every single word made perfect sense now.
The hidden meaning is how long it takes for him to do her.
Discreetly using his phone as cover, he glanced at Daniel: Christine was pregnant.
“Alright, thank you. Goodbye.”
He politely ended the call, then turned to follow Adrian, who was striding ahead. He cleared his throat and said, “Boss, Dr. Wong says… it needs to be after three months.”
“Three months.”
Adrian repeated slowly.
His assistants couldn’t see his face, but they could hear the ice in his voice. Then came the sound of him cracking his knuckles, one by one – click, click, click – like a dangerous prelude to fury.
It sounded like he was counting down to someone’s doom.
The two assistants exchanged another look: they had a feeling the next three months were going to be extremely difficult.
